Patriots Announce 10 Roster Cuts

Only major "surprises" in this wave were TE Jake Ballard and DE Marcus Benard.

Ballard's knee was likely the cause of his release, but he was far and away the Patriots' best in line Tight End with Gronkowski sidelined. The depth at Tight End is now thin, and I am fully expecting an addition or two via claim, signing or trade.

Marcus Benard had a good camp and was working as the top backup DE in games. He wasn't very consistent, but I still thought he was better than the others. The team must feel good about the health of Cunningham/Francis or the development of Bequette and Buchanan.

Do Fells and Ballard cuts mean Gronk is ready?

Not for week 1. For week 3-4? Maybe. It certainly means he will start the year on the active roster and not PUP.

There were reports a few weeks ago that the Patriots were very interested in trading for a Tight End, and these moves almost guarantee that they will pull the trigger on a trade or acquire one after cuts.

This probably also speaks to the level of confidence in Fells (also his cap $) and the level of health of Ballard.

Thinking that we were ready to trade one of our TE's speaks to the the level of knowledge possessed by message posters.

To be fair, on the day that this silly idea was proposed, others suggested that surely the poster meant that we were in the market to secure another TE.

Hoo-Hah & Develin are now likely to survive the next round of cuts...too bad.

And if Benard was cut, then Bequette should be next. Who needs John Abraham anyway?

All things considered I am not surprised with these cuts. I think Ballard could be back if his knee improves.

In Bill we trust.
