Patriots announce cuts of Aiken/[edit] Brandon Jones/Koutivides, and other moves

Too bad about White. I'd have kept him ahead of both the re-signed Scott Vallone
& the recently-claimed Gilbert Pena.

Not sure why people have it in their heads that the Pats only carry 8 OL. The Pats have typically carried 10 OL during the season and the rare occasions, 9.

(In response) Please list the rosters for either the playoffs or the start of season showing with the "norm" of 10 OL's.

The last time they had 9 or more OL on the start of September roster was 2009. It's been 8 every year since.

The legend lives on....

8 seems to be the norm lately, as manxman2601 points out, the last time they even kept 9 was all the way back in 2009.

I think that has a lot to do with the versatility that Belichick and Scarnecchia have made a point to have brought in at the position. I'm not sure if they'll feel that versatility is the same this year, but I certainly wouldn't think it'll be any more than 8 or 9 at the most.

Both Cannon and Svitek have the capacity to play inside too if needed, so that should come in handy along with the other expected 6 of: Solder, Mankins, Wendell, Connelly, Vollmer and one of Stankiewitch/McDonald(s)/other vet to be named.

Svitek did not look competent at offensive guard against the Detriot Lions.

No, he didn't, but it's hard to tell how much we can read into that one performance. I think this falls into the category of Belichick and Dante seeing a lot more than we have, but I'd agree with you for sure that he didn't do anything to set my mind at ease.

Remember that Cannon also didn't look good at all last preseason. Hell, he looked downright pathetic; yet he can still likely move inside/out should it come down to it.

I think the main point still stands that Svitek has some versatility should it come to that. Of course whether or not Belichick agrees will go a long way towards determining the possible number of OL. I keep thinking that we may see someone else brought it, but it hasn't happened yet.

Any idea on the health status of N.McDonald? Do you feel that it's a possibility that he could return?

It seems that Svitek and Cannon are fine Game Day backups. Svitek wasn't brought in to play guard. Most of us have a backup C or C/G as our #8 OL. We could keep 7 and wait for the cuts or McDonald.
