The Development of Ryan Mallett.

You must be joking. Tebow looked like trash and, to date, hasnt shown anything on this team that would convince me he's worthy of a roster spot. Mallett isn't going anywhere.

I think we have plenty of film to assess Tim Tebow as "trade bait". I just can't imagine anyone being interested in shopping for Tim...

Bill Belichick has rejected and laughed at even, any discussion of trading Mallett.

I have listened and read what has been posted, and I think fans are coming around to my point of view. I liked Cassell when others wanted his head. I really like Mallett even as some fans were dismissive, or thought him a draft pick opportunity, only.

Many Patriot fans have been dismissive of Ryan Mallett, even now. They see the GOAT Brady play, and then compare an inexperienced Ryan Mallett run a Brady-tailored Offense, and than say he can’t cut it. Certainly, he doesn’t have Brady’s accuracy in the short passing game. Newsflash, no one else does either.

The thing that dropped him from a prime First Round selection were not physical, athletic questions. No one could creditably complain about his rare athletic talents at QB. The questions about Mallett have rested on mostly anonymous, uncorroborated assertions about his lack of maturity and mental acuity.

I assert that 90% of QB play is done between the ears. But I trust BB’s judgement, even more.

After Belichick conducted a multi-hour 1-on-1 discussion and quiz, he not only proclaimed him a true student of the game and that Ryan possessed a high football IQ, he proved its veracity, when he drafted him. The son-of-a-coach, Mallett can breakdown film and is good at interpreting and understanding what he sees, according to to Belichick.

Ryan Mallett is dedicated, and proven coachable, and there is effort being directed at improving his perceived weaknesses. His footwork and gross accuracy has improved. The sailing passes have largely disappeared. He is trying to develop a “touch” for the short dump off pass, an abilty that is still a work-in-progress, but nevertheless, it IS a work-in-progress. He is getting better. As for maturity, Father Time has already given him three years, while he sits and learns.

The final proof I needed, was his relatively un-noted selection as one of the Ten pre-season dedicated athletes that Belichick annually selects. That proves his dedication and mental willingness to work to get better. I fully believe that the sky is the limit for Mallett, and what is more, I believe that BB knows it.

I am confident, that Mallett's draft selection may eventually rank with other BB coups like the 6th round selection for unheralded and dropping Tom Brady, and the 21st pick for mysteriously dropping Vince Wilfork. And other great picks like, the 6th pick for Richard Seymour, and the 11th pick for Jerod Mayo.

Ryan Mallett sits as a backup to Brady uncomplaining, wisely non divisive, as a true Pro should; but I believe he could likely start for half of the NFL teams right now.

Mallett fills a very important roster spot for us: #2 quarterback. He may or may not have a future as an NFL starter. I don't much care; it's not going to affect the patriots. Mallett is here for 2013 and probably for 2014 (unless we have another #2 that Josh trusts by then). I would expect us to draft a quarterback next year.

Mallett will have put in his time learning from the best. In 2015, it will be time for him to move on and see what he can do. Sure I'd like to sign him to a 5-year contract as a backup, with lots of incentives. But that is a pipe dream. Mallett has no reason to give up his dream just to sit and wait for Brady to get injured.

I thought mallet looked awesome. Made several 20 yard throws while on the move. Quick release accurate darts with a perfect spiral. Wait until he gets to run plays designed for his style. Very accurate and powerful deep ball.

So well said. I agree with you 100%. Ryan's work ethic to improve cannot be questioned and he has improved in his reads and his patience at the line. If you notice, he's now even imitating Brady by barking and pointing out the Mike LB and the blocking match ups while scanning the defense all pre-snap. The old Mallett would just hurry up to the line and quickly run the play. That guy is gone, this is the new Ryan Mallett, you can tell he has been sponging everything he can from the GOAT himself.

Ryan is at the point now in his development where he simply needs reps. Live game reps will polish and finish his development. I hope he plays a ton in these last two games.

Mallett is our QB of the future, not some guy in HS or college right now as some have said. Again, the issue is how do we keep him after next season? I think the brass really have to be proactive here and offer Ryan something enticing before its too late.

Mg,

I dropped the following paragraph from post #42. I thought it too controversial to include and needed a separate discussion if ever. Plus it is premature. It will not happen until the end of 2014, when Brady is 38 not 36, and the decision has to be made going forward.

"Plus I would guess that privately Tom Brady believes it too. It explains why the Brady contract was drawn the way it is. It guarantees that Brady can retire a Patriot. He won't be forced off the team like other HOF QBs like Montana, Unitas, Namath, Manning etc. were, for pure financial considerations when a transition begins.

The new guy can share the team, and split the "franchise" QB monies then, for the last few years before Brady retires; and the newcomer fully establishes himself.

Re the 2014 QB draft. It appears more barren that this last one at QB. 2015 is too soon to guess.

Is Mallett better than Brady? No.

Is he likely to be better than Brady? No.

Does TFB show any signs of slowing down? No.

If he's good and shows potential, which seems to be the case, it'll take big money to keep him on the bench behind TFB. Why would they spend big money for a guy who's going to sit on the bench when they could spend that money on someone who can help them win?

Name me the 16 teams where he could become the starter. Talk about hyperbole.

I have to go back to the tapes but I believe Hoyer was more polished than Mallett when he left.

16 is exaggerated, but these 9 could arguably use him tomorrow:

Minnesota,
Tampa Bay,
Arizona,
Buffalo,
NY Jets,
Cleveland,
Jacksonville,
Tennessee,
Oakland

I don't think 16, but there are a number of teams that Mallett would upgrade. Without any regard to schematic fit:

NYJ
JAX
TEN
OAK
KC (not sure about this one)
MIN
TB (Mike Glennon might render this moot)
ARI

That's 6-8 teams where I think Mallett could step right in as starter. You may note that I haven't included Cleveland. That's because Weeden has looked pretty good this pre-season.

Edit: Written at the same time as Palm Beach above.

Can't argue with you: Hoyer was "more polished." Polished, composed, smart, undersized and weak-armed. An excellent backup quarterback. I suspect, though, that teams looking for a potential franchise quarterback would much rather have the less polished Mallett, who stands 6'7" and throws a beautiful spiral with rare arm strength.

Mallett was felt to have the best arm in his draft class, but fell based on character concerns. 3-4 blemish-free years under Bill Belichick would presumably do wonders to ease those concerns. I feel confident that he'll get a chance at a starting job once his time here is done, and equally confident that he wants it -- badly -- and won't choose remain a backup, even for a big payday.

If only we had some carbonite. . . . :nooo:

He is ok, which is pretty good for a backup QB. Most backup QB totally suck so he is likely in the middle of the pack for backups but a long way from being a quality starter.

Every time I see him play I think of Bledsoe, big arm but no touch and a QB from another era.

If Brady is the best QB in the division, who is the 2nd best QB in the division, Mallet???

IMO, yes. There's certainly no one else in the division I'd rather have.

Adam Schefter ?@AdamSchefter 13m
Jon Gruden on ESPN: "If I were a coach, I'd offer a first-round pick to the Redskins to get Kirk Cousins on my team."

Why can't Gruden still be in the league. Wonder how he feels about Mallett?

I have three friends who are die hard Redskin fans. When they drafted RGIII in the first and cousins in the 3rd I told them that was a good move. They thought they wasted the 3rd. But who really knew how good someone will be in the NFL (no need for me to list QB busts) They badly need a QB and out of those two they should get one. Or at least one on the field at all times...

Dolphins fans will definitely make a case for Tannehill, and Bills fans would probably try to claim one of Manuel or Kolb (or both), but I'd rather have Mallett than any of them. And I'm not even super high on Mallett... I just think that all of the other guys suck.

In my mind the jury is still out on Manual, as far as Kolb goes

Tannehill same thing as far as I'm concerned.... Then again he may be the QB with the 2nd hottest wife in the division.

Hey Stu...off topic but...are you related to Stu DeBaker?..been waiting years to drop that line...
