This time I watched the entire game…..even Tebow time.. Here are my takes on what we saw.

1. It’s hard for me to say, but to a certain extent we have been spoiled by Tom Brady. It really doesn’t matter who they put out there, Tom Brady doesn’t skip a beat. Awesome is the word that comes to mind, simply awesome.

2. Does anyone still question that as good as Wes Welker has been, Danny Amendola is going to fill that role without missing beat…..IF he stays healthy. Let me put it this way. The Pats paid less for a Wes Welker, circa 2007, and the Broncos paid more for the 2013 version.

In fact - let me go one step further (and really piss off Ivan ) and say that Amendola will be more valuable because he can run certain routes that Welker couldn’t, The only question now is not a matter of skill, but a matter of health.

That being said, if the Pats run the ball more and spread the ball around more, Amendola's stats probably won't match Welker's production, and that will be a good thing. Remember we DON'T want to be in a situation where if you shut down our slot guy you can limit this offense like we've seen in the playoffs the last few years. In other words given the same number of targets I think Amendola can equal Welker's production or even better it slightly, but I don't think that would be a good thing in the great scheme of things.

3. I liked what I saw from Ryan Mallet tonight. I saw him look off receivers. I saw him go to second options. I saw him throw it away when nothing was there. As far as decision making was concerned, I thought it was his best night as a pro. Even when his passes were off, they were to the right guy. It was an fairly significant improvement over his first game. Still a ways to go, but very few QB’s look good when you are being compared to the “exemplar”

But here is what I like best. He made his improvement behind an OL which was manned by 5 players who are VERY unlikely nto make the final roster. Maybe one of those guys will make it. BTW- I thought these :”scrubs” protected Mallet fairly well, but they couldn’t generate much push in the run game. So if you thought Ryan Mallet is starting to look like an NFL QB think of what he would look like behind that elite OL, and a top 10 running game. Think about it this way. Mallet is looks a LOT better at this point of the preseason, than Matt Castle did in 2008

4. Speaking of the OL, the first group stuffed a pretty good TB front 7 to night. It was virually flawless in protecting Brady, and opened up some decent holes for the Rbs in that first quarter. The OL seems to be developing into something special. Names like Tompkins, Dobson, Ridley, Vareen, etc are all the rave, but make no mistake about it. After Tom Brady, the biggest element in the success of this offense is going to be the OL.

5. Kudos to Will Svitek, Signed to be a back up swing tackle and forced to play an unfamiliar position due to injuries, he has filled in seamlessly. Dante has done it again. This was a very quiet but very good FA acquisition. Both Cannon and Connolly are likely to be coming back to practice this week, so it will be interesting to see how that RG position ends up

6. Nothing Lagarrette Blount did in his brief appearance tonight tarnished what he did in his first game. No doubting his talent, but I still have some questions about his ability to fill the role of 250lb SY/GL push the pile power back.

The Devlin kid did that well tonight, but on the only 3rd and short chance Blount got, even though he made the first down, once he was hit, he didn’t fall forward.

I wonder if the Pats wouldn’t have been better off with Peyton Hillis as the “power back”. While he also showed some “wiggle” tonight, I think Hillis knows what his is. Too often Blount thinks he’s Barry Sanders when we need him to be Mike Allstat, I hope I’m wrong. Because those thrilling highlight reel runs won’t mean much if on 3rd and short we are walking off the field because Blount was looking for the big play rather than first down.

7. Dobson, Boyce, and Thompkins looked like the rookies they are tonight and took a small step back from the frantic pace of the first 3 weeks of camp. But Zack Sudfeld certainly DIDN’T. The kid looked Jimmy Graham good. With Fells out Sudfeld took full advantage of his opportunity. Both is scoring plays were TOUGH contested catches. This kid might end up contributing more than any of the rookie WR’s early this season.

8. Now on to the D.

a. My first impression was that we are going to see a MUCH more aggressive and creative D this season. Its been driving me nuts for the last 3 years to keep seeing vanilla fronts with the same alignments over and over again. It didn’t matter if it were a 3 man front or a 4 man front, you could almost count on seeing the DL line up the same places all the time.

We saw NONE of that last night from the first group. On many occasions we saw 9 men on the LOS, and while only 4 or 5 actually rushed, it often looked like more

b. That being said 3 of the 4 sacks were accomplished only because of the excellent coverage by the secondary and Lbs

c. Tommy Kelly is a beast. Brandon Spikes might have gotten credit for the sack, but Tommy Kelly caused it with a great inside rush (against a probowl LG if I‘m not mistaken)

d. The Kelly/Wilfolk combination s going to be a good one, however when they were out of the line up, the Pats middle was as soft as soft serve ice cream.

e. Chandler Jones really does look like he’s ready to take a step up this season. Here’s hoping he stays healthy

f. Dowling dressing, though not participating in the last few practices, give me hope that he will be coming back to practice this coming week. It could be the most important week of his short NFL career. No one has been more supportive of this kid than me, but even my patience has been stretched to the limit. I still thing the kid can play, but ability doesn’t do you any good if you can’t get on the field to show it.

g. Getting Dowling and Dennard back this week will really boost the secondary depth, just like getting Connolly and Cannon will help the OL depth. (one offensive note. If Connolly doesn’t get bank soon, given Svitek’s success and Cannon returning, Connolly has too big a contract for a back up who can’t get on the field.

h. I know this won’t be popular, but I thought Tavon Wilson played much better this week. He made a few good plays on the outside and was in tight coverage on a few passes that were cut. Even his penalty on the GL was a a coverage the refs don’t call 7 out of 10 times IMO
9. Our overall Defense looks much improved over the first week, and our front seven looks both aggressive and creative. We clearly need more depth at DT. Armstead is another guy who should finally hit the field this week. I am VERY anxious to see how he fairs.

10. Special teams is going to have to repair some things and Julian Edelman looked anything but elite on punt returns tonight. He stil make a lot of people miss, but that doesn’t do you any good if you aren’t moving forward.
I’m disappointed I didn’t get a chance to see Leon Washington on a KR.

11. Now a couple of questions for the members

a. anyone know how Brandon Deadrick and Kyle Love are doing in Jacksonville. The talent gap in the DT depth made me think of them tonight

b. Who flashed for you among the 2nd half participants. I thought Buchanan had a few good rushes than it was interesting that he got the nod for the initial back up to Ninko, and saw action in the first half.

On a very minor note, Peyton Hillis was not a realistic target for the Pats after McDaniels came back. He traded Hillis away when he was in Denver, and there are rumors that it was because Hillis was making moves on Mrs. McDaniels. If that's anywhere near true, I think it's safe to say that those two would not have been able to coexist in the Pats' locker room.

7. Dobson, Boyce, and Thompkins looked like the rookies they are tonight and took a small step back from the frantic pace of the first 3 weeks of camp. But Zack Sudfeld certainly DIDN’T. The kid looked Jimmy Graham good.

We all have high hopes for Zack Sudfeld. No one is going to dispute that.

Saying that he "looked Jimmy Graham good" is pretty silly though, especially since there are some outside of N.England who feel that Graham is slightly better than even Gronkowski.

Either way, Zack Sudfeld looks great for an overachieving UDFA, and it appears as though he can cover some of the move/joker role that AH's absence caused us.

He is still very small and kind of thin for a TE. It has been openly discussed both here and in the media that he definitely needs to improve on his blocking, which will hopefully come with time and weight training. In the meantime we're all very excited--but he doesn't look anywhere close to Rob Gronkowski or Jimmy Graham as the top 2 TE's in the NFL either. That's a pretty big stretch.

Armstead is another guy who should finally hit the field this week. I am VERY anxious to see how he fairs.

Where are you getting this information? The last I heard we had no idea when Armstead would play or practice, and many here have him pegged for a PUP spot. Why do you assume that he'll "finally hit the field this week?"

Other than those 2 questions, I think you have a ton of great thoughts as usual.

No, he's not as good a blocker at GRONK (really, what pass-catching TE is?). OTOH, given the money the Pats lost on Hern-idiot, and the money the Saints will have to shower on Graham in the very new future, getting a Sudfeld for, oh, $1.3M or so for three years seems like highway robbery.

I'm definitely not trying to rain on the Sudfeld parade. I've been rooting for him all of camp and he looks like a great opportunity at moving on from AH, but comparing him to Jimmy Graham kind of jumped out at me. It's not meant to piss anyone off. I think Ken had a great write up other than those 2 issues that I responded to.

I think many would have had the same issue if someone would compare Thompkins to AJ Green, or something in that vein.

I watched the defense very closely this game and focused on our backup players. Here are my thoughts.

1. First up is the dline. The backup dts were not getting the job done, including forsten and francis. The only guy that was able to hold his ground consistently was #69, Anthony White. The only backup linemen that get a thumbs up from me are white, bernard, and to a lesser degree buchannon.

2. After collins and fletcher, I did not see another backup lb on the field that deserved a spot on the team. Tarp is still too weak and guys break his tackles. Beaharnis is a little slow and should go to the practice squad.

3. Now the corners. Pretty solid play all around except for justin green. All starting caliber qbs are going to destroy this guy unless he drastically improves. 2 games in a row and he thinks a guy is down without touching them. Lastly, I want a better look at #36, brandon jones. He looked good but he wasn't on the field long enough.

4. The safeties including tavon were pretty solid. I can't hate on tavon at all this game. He contested everything and duron harmon seemed to be in the right spot most of the time.

5. Almost forgot the fb develin. Seemed pretty decent and I want to see if he is a better blocker than hooman. I also want to see develin run the ball more. I want a power back with a burst, and i am not completely satisfied with blount or bodden. Maybe develin will surprise us and be that hillis/heath evans I'm looking for.

You wouldn't be the first to point out Anthony White. By that time I wasn't paying attention very closely.

Mixed feelings on T.Wilson, but others have said that he didn't have nearly as bad of a game this week.

Strangley enough, someone pointed out the "great play" (not sarcastically either) of Ryan and Green, claiming that Cole was surely a goner based on their great play tonight

Not coincidentally, that also set me off on a mini rampage regarding L Ryan and his play thus far.

I didn't want to post about tebow, but it was so bad that I couldn't resist. Two quarters and negative passing yards. OMG!!!!

Tebow really does inspire people though. I never dreamed of being a nfl qb but after last night I think I have decent shot. Here's my plan

1. Go to Rutgers
2. ???????
3. Profit.

I'll assume you were speaking to ct, b/c he's certainly not my boy

In the beginning of TC, I didn't think he'd really be in that much danger, but at this point in time I think he is squarely on the bubble for sure.
He's not your boy but he is PatFanKen's boy.

As for your boy Bequette:

Watch Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New England Patriots [08/16/2013] - NFL.com

Blanked on the score sheet once again.

This isn't overly surprising, considering that I think the only time I saw him was when he was at 3-4 DE. Not really the position to be putting up stats. Belichick seemed to be putting a lot on his young front 7 guys by making them play a different (and more difficult) defensive scheme than what they'll end up doing most of the time.

Great observation, Sciz. Thanks for that.

What do you personally think the odds are that Bequette makes the team?

If I had to guess I'd honestly be in the dark at around 50/50.

Supafly you got to rewatch the eagles game. Ryan's play wasn't nearly as bad as you think it was. It was mainly two bad plays. The 26 yard post to avant on 3rd down and a missed tackle in the endzone that he was partially blocked on. It was more of tavon wilson's miss than anything.

I was on the logan ryan bandwagon b4 we drafted him and he is playing like I expected. He is like a weird combination of revis and bodden. He is patient like revis and sticks very close to his man without getting called even though it looks like he should. The reason why he reminds of bodden also is his lack of speed. Bodden functioned very well for us even though he is one of the slowest cbs i've ever seen don a pats uni.

And until he gets used to the speed of the game he is going to continue getting burned because he is unwilling to give guys much cushion. This will result in him getting burned or jumping routes like you saw last night until he finds that middle ground.

Well, for one thing let me just say that it's not just my personal opinion. Most here in the "worst player of last week" thread felt that he was pretty clearly the worst player on the field. I also saw him give up a TD tonight where he had bad coverage too, and there weren't glowing reports from TC either--although most were focused on other players.

I agree with you that we should all hold off on too many judgments until a much later date, but at the same time it's been relatively frustrating to hear of what may be yet another bad CB choice. I'll try and do a better job of holding off judgment until we see a bigger picture.

Great observation, Sciz. Thanks for that.

I think it depends a lot on how many DEs they keep and how soon Cunningham returns and how well he plays. I think that right now, Ninkovich, Jones, Francis, and Buchanan are ahead of Bequette. If they were to only keep four, then Bequette would be out. If they were to keep five and Cunningham gets back on the field and outplays him, then he's out. So I would think Bequette either has to outplay Cunningham and the Pats keep 5 or the Pats keep 6 with Cunningham ahead of Bequette. I'm really not a fan of Benard either way. They keep putting him at DT with the top defenders, but it's not working.

Now, that 3-4 that they showed off tonight kind of threw me off. It wasn't the normal 2-gap 3-4 that we know Belichick for. They don't even have three guys that could pull that off consistently. Instead, they were using some smaller, 4-3 DE types. If they plan on using this 3-4 defense for any significant amount of time during the regular season, then I'd have to rethink things. That essentially splits the depth chart into the 43DE/34DE group and the 43DE/34OLB group, and my first impression is that Ninkovich, Buchanan, and Benard are more 34 OLB types (along with 43 OLBs Hightower and Collins), while Jones, Francis, Bequette, and Cunningham would be at DE. The personnel during those 3-4 formations is definitely the main thing from this game that I want to look over, though. I'll probably get to that on Monday evening, so hopefully I'll have a better idea of what they are trying to do then.

Basically, I'd say less than 50%, but I think things are more based on other variables rather than how good of a showing Bequette has had and will have.

In the past many defensive linemen have not shown up in the box score, however have heard BB praise them post game as they did what they were supposed to do...

INOW a box score is not the necessary criteria for having a good or bad game for a lineman..

So aside from our untrained eyeball test, there is not much out there to judge him by....

I thought Forston's play was decent.

Rookie receivers did not really take a step back, they were just not the focus of the offense. Looked like it was number 80s turn to show what he could do.

My thoughts which overlap some already posted:

1. Kickoff coverage - would be curious to know the source of the breakdown on a few kicks (notably the first). Quite often I give a free pass to certain backups that play on coverage teams but never really get a chance to understand how they performed their assignment on ST's. If a backup makes a critical error on ST's, their roster position is tenuous.

2. Brandon Bolden - I am very biased towards him and even with Blount's success, I would still prefer to see Blount behind Ridley. I think he runs with more power than Blount and I fear if 5 RB's make the cut, that leaves one less TE which would concern me.

3. Backup front 7 - they got pretty gashed although Collins looked like he was all over the field making plays. DT depth has been my biggest concern all training camp. Last night didn't help although I actually liked some of what Grissom did.

4. Mallett and Tebow - was disappointed with some of Mallett's throws, very inacurrate, looked like poor footwork and mechanics. Just don't see how Tebow makes this team. He is so slow moving away from the center and forget his ability to pass, it just isn't going to happen. I just hope Josh doesn't lobby for him on cutdown day and then once again we have one less TE. While I appreciate that he brings a different set of plays with his running style, this would mean taking Brady out of the game which wouldn't make any sense to me plus I would still feel much more confident in Mallett than Tebow if it ever came to that (please God, no!).
