Red Sox Hate Yankees & Patriots

The land the Globe sits on wont become a stadium. It will be torn down or renovated to serve as some other firms HQ. The Globe will be moved into an office building somewhere else ala Herald, and the paper will be printed elsewhere (Worcester?) Henry is selling partnerships as we speak, so that coupled with a future real estate transaction could make this a smart investment. I say could, since the newspaper business is sinking into the abyss. Henry will make back his 70 million cash investment rather quickly.

I'm sure all the teams have a bit of envy of each other, but the Red Sox go the extra mile to steal the spotlight from everyone especially the Patriots.

For years, they used their relationship with WEEI to make them talk Red Sox all year long (the only sport that WEEI would talk all year long while the rest were confined mostly to their respective seasons). I remember about a decade ago, a typical week in November or December on WEEI would be Patriots talk Monday and Friday, a mix of Red Sox and Pats on Tuesday and Thursday, and all Red Sox on Wednesday. Once 98.5 came along and were far more Patriots heavy, WEEI was forced to lighten up on the Red Sox talk and talk more Patriots.

And Patriots Monday was often wall to wall Red Sox talk interrupted by Patriot players coming by. My two favorite memories of WEEI were Fred and Steve discussing a four way trade of Manny Rameriez, and the Patriot's Monday after the Bills game where Bruschi came back from a fricken' hole in his heart it was all about a front office move by the Red Sox.

No more ridiculous and pathetic than your response. John Henry is so obsessed with the way the media portrays the Red Sox that he once a couple of years ago made an unannounced visit to Felger and Mazz because they were piling on him and his Sox so much for their personnel decisions even though their main competitor pays money for exclusive access to him and Lucchino. Do you think Kraft would do that? Never.

The Red Sox are obsessed with being the most beloved team in town and their actions prove it.

Yeah, Rob, we all know how Felger and Mazz are pro-Patriot. (Yes, that was sarcasm. If someone can argue against you by agreeing with you, perhaps you need to reword that part of your argument. Just saying.)

Edit: I'll leave this in case some one is writing to call me an idiot. They are right. Gee, did I misread his post. (Is there an icon for "gee, I'm a moron"?)

All anyone has to do is look at the economics of this $70 million purchase.

It is obvious, it has nothing to do with journalism or the newspaper business.

Just Googlemap "135 Morrissey Boulevard". The building/land alone is worth $50 million. Throw in the equipment inside, the trucks, etc. and you have a cash deal for property.

The New York Times bought the Boston Globe for $1.1 billion 10 years ago.

What this economically screams is that the "newspaper" is worthless.

Throw in the fact that the Times will be keeping all pension obligations Henry won't have any. This is very rare in any industry outside of newspapers these days.

Folks - - John Henry just bought $70 million of real estate and equipment.

This is only an equity purchase? I disagree. Just because a company is losing money does not mean its production and distribution of goods/services is without benefit/potential benefit. In the case of the Globe, it has a relatively wide reach within a specific market. The issue now to Henry is cost of producing the goods/services as compared to the income it creates. As is the case with many long running services/industries, an upheaval in business structure occurred. Companies that adapt can regain profitability, companies that don't go under or get absorbed. For Henry, he may have a hedge to his bet due to the liquid value of the Globe's assets, however, it's naive to think he is not going to use the Globe to turn a profit AND maximize profit/equity in his local business (the Red Sox).
Not directed at anyone in particular but anyone who thinks this will not affect local team coverage as well as non sports coverage is also naive. Paper's have long skewed their limited page area to ideology and corporate benefit. So somehow Henry buying the Globe will make them be unbiased? Tell that to Disney and General Electric.
However, as DI said, Kraft could have bid on it. I assume he looked at the value of liquid assets as well as the reach of the globe's goods/services and decided it wasn't worth it. We'll see if Henry or Kraft were smarter. For Pats fans, if the Globe becomes too skewed, turn away from it, it's as simple as that. There's much more media out there to use....

There's a bigger story here that is telling about old media. The Times appears to have turned down a better offer for the Globe. In doing so they appear to have broken their own guidelines for the "auction". Another sad commentary on old media and how they can't get out of their own ideological/biased way (IMHO).

A personality feud? Hell, that's like describing World War II as a neighborhood spat! Borges doesn't just hate Belichick. He hates Brady (loved Bledsoe), Kraft, Kraft's family (the only local **** who mocked Myra), Rodney Harrison (called him a fraud, phony and overrated) and we all could go on and on. You're right about Shank and Sullivan. You ought to be willing to admit I'm right about Tomase, Borges, Felger and, for that matter, Buckley who also hates Kraft, Belichick and the Pats in general. But, you won't.

Admit what? I never said the Herald was fair and balanced to the Patriots. I don't know why you are inventing that straw man argument. What I say is that the Herald simply doesn't count. Because it doesn't. They also were not at the forefront of the South Boston neighborhood war against Kraft in the 90's like the Globe was in the form of Mike Barnicle, Will McDonough and Shank. I remember the Globe's actions during those years - - it was ugly.

Like the majority of humanoids with a rooting interest in Boston sports and news in general, the Boston Herald is as foreign to me as the Marrakesh Evening Tribune.

If a tree falls in the middle of the forest with no one around to hear it......

In the football world Borges is the ONLY one at the Herald who counts for anything (if anything). That being said, any local Patriots fan would know that Borges is a 20 year GLOBE/Joe Sullivan guy through and through. Sully clung to him and backed him 100% during the plagiarism scandal until the suits from the NYT pulled the plug. THAT is the only reason he's not writing his hatred from Morrissey Boulevard today...........One would think that was common knowledge.

The others you mentioned are either special ed dropouts (Tomase) or attention whores/Skip Bayless wannabes who would claim their parents shot JFK if that would get them ratings.

As I said earlier, bringing in a comparison to the Herald is setting the bar comfortably low, literally on the ground.

If Henry wants to sell more newspapers (which should now be his objective), he should increase coverate of the Patriots!!!!

No kidding. A megastar like Brady and an evil genius like Belichick do not come along often and will not be around forever, so riding their stories is good business for everyone in the media.

Like how exciting, by comparison, is Claude Julien and Patrice Bergeron? Same excellent results and a joy to watch, but the news value is zip compared to Brady and Belichick.

I hope Henry figures out the new business model for the news gathering capacity of the Globe and the Worcester Telegram. The on-paper model is finished thanks to the internet, but there is still money in producing the message.

**** the Red Sox and that boring ass sport of baseball.

Exactly. That's why I root for the Red Sox to miss the playoffs every year so I don't have to read about that c**p sport for a second longer than necessary.
