Last years roster players you'd expect to be cut...

Statements like this add to the reasons people dislike Tim Tebow. That's the truth, fair or not. (And I say this as someone rooting for TT.)

There is ZERO football reasoning in wanting Talib gone from the team for any Patriot fan (I'm sure the Jets/Dolphins/Bills/Broncos/Ravens fans would love it, though). Talib is far and away the best corner on the team, brings much-needed attitude to the defense and is mentoring the kids.

I don't know, maybe it's a Machiavellian bomb you throw to incite shots that play into some subconscious need for Christian-victim-hood, but really, get a grip.

Talib's a bad actor, or at least, he has been one historically. Why should anyone be suprised, or offended, if someone wants him off the team? How is that any different from those who didn't want Moss, for example? Did people not wanting Moss make you dislike Tebow? How about those who don't want Hernandez back now? Do those people somehow add to the reasons to dislike Tebow?

If people are not liking Tim Tebow because of what one person says in a forum, they're the ones with the problem.

Maybe, being a Christian, CC has an issue with a possible drugs cheat who has been violent in the past.

While I agree wholeheartedly, the thread question is "expect" to be cut not wish he were cut. There's lots of bottom 53 guys I wish were cut because in a sane world it would mean we have better replacements.

All said, one dark horse expectation is Jake Bequette as nobody seems to be highlighting him for (needed) improved play. Unlikely because it's rare for a 2nd year relatively high pick to be cut.

I'll be honest.... Bequette never crosses my mind for anything. He's like the invisible man for me. I'd add him to the list, too, because I don't think they're going to be carrying all the 'pass rushers' who can't rush the passer particularly well.

Also, I'm with you in that I don't see any way Talib gets the ax. I just didn't think the Tebow stuff needed to be included in the response(s), because liking/hating Tebow should have nothing to do with Christiancat's personal opinion of Talib.

Re: Re: Last years roster players you'd expect to be cut...

Teblow gets cut way before Talib does son...

Tebow was not on the roster last season so he isn't relivent to this discussion.

Based on opinion of what I prefer. That is all.

So you think that whatever you HOPE will happen is what WILL happen?

I guess that would help explain your user name, sign-up date, and so on.

Listening to Talib when he gets in front of a microphone and watching how hard he works on every rep in the drills at camp, I have a feeling that the change of scenery did good things for him. TB was not a good fit and this could be a Corey Dillon-type situation. Dillon's problems were also domestic violence in nature. I hope this works out. God knows the Patriots need a break.

Cuts: I see Cunningham, Dowling and Mesko as the big ones. Cole, Tarpinian, Koutouvides, etc., are guys who may leave and return as shadow roster guys if they don't get snatched up. Mesko's contract should not be a reason to cut him.

Marquice Cole cannot be trusted to play cornerback for the New England Patriots especially after the AFC Championship Game.

Niko Koutouvides was not originally on the 53 man roster at the start of last season but was signed after week one.

If I remember correctly, Jeff Tarpinian still has another year of practice squad eligibility.

After Rob Ninkovich and Chandler Jones, the defensive end position is the most highly contested with regard to the New England Patriots defense.

Ras-I Dowling needs to get his lame arse back on the practice field.

In my mind, Zoltan Mesko:Ryan Allen::Adam Vinatieri:Robbie Gould.

From a cap- only perspective, I'm guessing they save about 900K if Mesko is cut with no dead money next year??? Based on Miguel's page of Mesko on the books for 1.3Million this year and Allen at 405K.

Which player(s) who were part of last season 53 man roster do you expect not to make this years final roster?

My personal candidates are (see below).

Nate Ebner
Mike Rivera
Niko Koutouvides
Kamar Aiken
Daniel Fells

I would appreciate it if you post to disagree with one of the 5 players I've selected that you offer someone who was on the roster last season that you'd view as more likely to be cut in their place.

Let me try a slightly different spin on this (and see if perhaps we can get the thread back on track).

To the best of my knowledge these are all the players that began the 2013 NFL year under contract with the Patriots, that are still on the roster:

QB: Tom Brady, Ryan Mallett
RB: Brandon Bolden, James Develin, Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen
WR: Matthew Slater, Kamar Aiken
TE: Rob Gronkowski, Daniel Fells, Jake Ballard, Michael Hoomanawaui
OL: Logan Mankins, Marcus Cannon, Dan Connolly, Nate Solder, Markus Zusevics, Ryan Wendell
DL: Chandler Jones, Marcus Forston, Justin Francis, Vince Wilfork, Marcus Benard, Jermaine Cunningham, Rob Ninkovich, Jake Bequette
LB: Jerod Mayo, Dont'a Hightower, Jeff Tarpinian, Dane Fletcher, Mike Rivera, Brandon Spikes
CB: Alfonzo Dennard, Ras-I Dowling
S: Nate Ebner, Tavon Wilson, Steve Gregory, Devin McCourty
ST: Stephen Gostkowski, Danny Aiken, Zoltan Mesko

Here is a list of players that became free agents on March 12, then re-signed with the Pats and are still on the roster:

  • CB Kyle Arrington
  • CB Marquice Cole
  • WR Julian Edelman
  • LB Niko Koutouvides
  • CB Aqib Talib
  • OT Sebastian Vollmer

As a point of reference here is a list of players that were on the 2012 roster but are no longer with the club (not re-signed as free agents):

  • CB Will Allen
  • S Josh Barrett
  • WR Deion Branch
  • S Patrick Chung
  • S Derrick Martin
  • G Jamey Richard
  • DE Trevor Scott
  • WR Donte' Stallworth
  • OL Donald Thomas
  • WR Wes Welker
  • LB Tracy White
  • RB Danny Woodhead

And here is a list of players that were on the 2012 roster and were under contract at the start of the 2013 NFL year, that have since been released; this includes practice squad players that were signed to future/reserve contracts as well as various reserve (military, did not report) lists

  • WR Brandon Lloyd
  • WR Shun White (Military/reserve in 2012)
  • DT Myron Pryor
  • RB Jeff Demps (traded)
  • WR Jeremy Ebert (PS)
  • FB Tony Fiammetta (Exempt/Left Squad)
  • TE Brad Herman (IR)
  • DL Tracy Robertson (PS)
  • DB Malcolm Williams
  • RG Brian Waters (Did Not Report)
  • WR Andre Holmes (PS)
  • DL Brandon Deaderick
  • DL Kyle Love
  • QB Mike Kafka (PS)
  • TE Aaron Hernandez
  • OL Nick McDonald

Right now the Patriots have 45 players that were on their roster in some form last year. I would divide them into the following groups:

Roster Locks, will not be cut:
  • QB Tom Brady
  • RB Stevan Ridley
  • RB Shane Vereen
  • TE Rob Gronkowski
  • ST Matthew Slater
  • LG Logan Mankins
  • LT Nate Solder
  • C Ryan Wendell
  • RT Sebastian Vollmer
  • DE Chandler Jones
  • DT Vince Wilfork
  • DE Rob Ninkovich
  • LB Jerod Mayo
  • LB Dont'a Hightower
  • S Devin McCourty
  • CB Kyle Arrington
  • CB Aqib Talib
  • K Stephen Gostkowski
  • LS Danny Aiken

Likely To Make Roster:
  • QB Ryan Mallett
  • OL Marcus Cannon
  • OL Dan Connolly
  • LB Brandon Spikes
  • CB Alfonzo Dennard

On The Bubble:
  • RB Brandon Bolden
  • TE Daniel Fells
  • TE Jake Ballard
  • TE Michael Hoomanawanui
  • OL Markus Zusevics
  • WR Julian Edelman
  • DT Marcus Forston
  • DE Justin Francis
  • DE Marcus Benard
  • DE Jermaine Cunningham
  • DE Jake Bequette
  • LB Jeff Tarpinian
  • LB Dane Fletcher
  • LB Mike Rivera
  • LB Niko Koutouvides
  • CB Ras-I Dowling
  • CB Marquice Cole
  • S Nate Ebner
  • S Tavon Wilson
  • S Steve Gregory
  • P Zoltan Mesko

Unlikely To Make Roster
  • FB James Develin (on 53-man roster for 4 games in '12; appearing in one)
  • WR Kamar Aiken (appeared in only one game in 2012)

If we remove Develin and Aiken from the conversation, which of the 43 other players would we place on a list of five players that are most likely to be cut? I'll go with the following:

  • Ras-I Dowling
  • Jeff Tarpinian
  • Mike Rivera
  • Jermaine Cunningham
  • Marcus Forston

I think Bolden is my top candidate. Only really performed for a couple of games and disappeared and got suspended. Now he isn't practicing.

Awesome way of framing things. Here are my thoughts on likely victims.

In general, I think the various ST LBs are in trouble. Mayo/Hightower/Collins/Fletcher have the speed to play STs as needed. 1 of the ST LBs may make it, but it may also be 0. So Koutivides/Rivera/Tarpinian are all in trouble. To the extent they were developmental rather than just ST -- well, they don't seem to have developed that well.

I forget where you put Hooman on your lists, but not all four of Hooman, Ballard, Fells, and Sudfeld will be on the roster when Gronk comes back. I'm guessing Sudfeld beats somebody else -- he's gotten too much visibility to make it to the PS -- and given how Ballard seems to be feeling, he's probably the victim.

Dowling, Cole, Ebner, Gregory and T. Wilson have trouble all making the roster, given the draft picks spent on the Rutgers guys and the signing of A. Wilson, unless there's some carnage near the top of the depth chart (e.g. Dennard's legal & health issues, or A. Wilson's speed). Base case is that 2 are gone.

Mesko's in a position battle. The reports the past couple of days have been favorable to him, but it's not over.

There may be some carnage at DE as well. Bequette & Cunningham have uphill battles vs. lower-drafted guys.

  • RB Brandon Bolden
  • TE Daniel Fells
  • TE Jake Ballard
  • OL Markus Zusevics
  • WR Julian Edelman
  • DT Marcus Forston
  • DE Justin Francis
  • DE Marcus Benard
  • DE Jermaine Cunningham
  • LB Jeff Tarpinian
  • LB Dane Fletcher
  • LB Mike Rivera
  • LB Niko Koutouvides
  • CB Ras-I Dowling
  • CB Marquice Cole
  • S Nate Ebner
  • S Tavon Wilson
  • S Steve Gregory
  • P Zoltan Mesko

Either I'm reading too quickly, or you forgot Hooman and Bequette on your lists.

Something like that. That said, ST seems to be a case where a tie goes to the veteran, especially since Mesko's strength is directional punting, and preventing teams from doing much of anything with his punts.

No, you are absolutely correct.

Great catch, not sure how I missed both of them. :confused3:

Thanks for that; I'll go back and edit the post.

Also, I agree about the 'blood bath'; while WR and TE will get most of the attention in terms of roster battles, virtually every position on defense will deserve just as much focus. There will be plenty of competition for a limited number of roster spots at DE, DT, LB, S and CB that will be well worth watching, even when the starters are done for the evening in the upcoming preseason games.

And more than that each of the next three seasons when Allen is under contract for cheap and Mesko would have to be re-signed.

Brady had a child out of wedlock. A nasty sinner he is. Here's hoping he gets cut too because he really doesn't live up to my Christian standards either.

Mesko is also the holder for field goal kicker Gostkowski.
