And here is why Jamie Collins, Michael Buchanan, Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon were drafted and Adrian Wilson was signed along with the re-signing of Aqib Talib:

In 2012, the New England Patriots were 14th in the NFL in covering opposing teams #1 wide receiver at 79 yards per game on 8.4 pass attempts per game. And this statistical accounting includes prior to the trade of Talib.

Against opposing #2 wide receivers, the Pats ranked #6 last year allowing only 44.7 yards per game on 6.2 pass attempts per game.

However, against a teams' #3 wide receiver, an opposing teams' tight end and primary running back, the Pats ranked 30th (#3 WR), 29th (TE) and 23rd (RB) in the NFL.

Against a teams' #3 WR, the Pats gave up 67.8 YPG on 7 pass attempts per game.

Against a teams' primary tight end, the Pats gave up 64.4 YPG on 8.8 pass attempts per game.

And against a teams' primary running back, the Pats gave up 50.7 YPG on 7.6 pass attempts per game.

I thought that's why they brought in Tavon Wilson. Are we giving up on him already?

It seems to confirm what we know about the BB defensive philosophy: Take away what the opponent does best, and make them beat you with their 2nd and 3rd options. Through gameplanning we've been able to limit the top options, but we lack the depth of talent to also limit the middle tier guys one on one. Hopefully we've added enough talent to improve in this area.

thanks, always like it when someone can pt to hard data to validate or disprove a perception (like the lack of coverage LBing)

Not a problem......This should dispel any opinions regarding where the Patriots weakness lies.

It would seem that BB has diagnosed the problem already, and has strategized this draft and FAs to to answer the problem. To stop the TEs he has brought in an old cagy vet with size who can play the Big Nickle or "Money" CB position and shut down the TEs.

Secondly, he drafted an OLB with great speed and coverage ability, (as a former Safety), to stop the RBs out of the backfield and help with the TEs.

Thirdly, he resigned Aquib Talib to maintain the coverage on the opponent's #1 WR.

Fouthly, He drafted another CB and Safety to add depth in case of injury.

RBs release from the backfield unchallenged and far too often uncovered. Yes, the LB corp is brutally slow but lets not wash over another truth.....coaching

You can be the best coached player on the field, but the coach can't make you more aware of whats happening during the play.

If the LB screws up his assignment or doesn't notice a RB slipping out into the flat, it isn't the coaches fault.

Agreed. I think BB puts the players on the field in position to succeed, the defensive players the past few years have just sucked too much to do what BB said.

BB KNEW Eli was going to Manningham on that play in the super bowl and Chung was too slow to get there on time even knowing where the play was going before hand :bricks:. Same thing with Mayo they put him in position for a 100 yard pick 6 and instead its a TD that goes right by him to Cruz while he's standing in a zone.

LBs on this team are slowwww with minimal coverage instincts.
