Patriots Best/Worse Draft Picks

Sims was indeed the worst, especially how coveted he was going into the draft.

IMO Lawrence MaPhony was easily second worst .... A few sporadic games that he was actually relevant in does not make for a first round selection.

I don't think Eason belongs on the list. He had production and took us to a SUper Bowl, hardly a failure.

TREVOR MATiCH and BEN THOMAS instead of Jerry Rice would be my replacement.

Worse Draft Picks

why Tony Eason belongs to that 'worst' list ?

yes, he took us to our FIRST Super Bowl and from 1984 to 1986 he performed not bad at all and if i'm not wrong he was on 1984 the 3rd best NFL passer rating and 4th on 1986

I first realized I knew nothing about football when I saw this guy called Marcus Allen win the Heisman Trophy. He looked really great.

But, of course, it was only because he was playing on an outstanding team and, anyway, running back isn't where the war is won. It's won in the trenches. I know that now that the Patriots picked Ken Sims.

(Next year my stupidity continued. I'd seen this guy called Marino playing for the University of Pittsburgh. He seemed amazing to me. But what do I know?)

In the Belichick era, here's my list:

BEST
1. Brady. 199th pick in 2000, 140 career AV, 2 all pro teams, 8 pro bowl teams, 2 MVPs, 3 Super Bowl titles. Best pick (especially considering where he was taken) in the history of the National Football League.

2. Seymour. 6th pick in 2001, 90 career AV, 3 all pro teams, 7 pro bowl teams, 3 Super Bowl titles.

3. Vince Wilfork. 21st pick in 2004, 74 career AV, 1 all pro team, 5 pro bowl teams, 1 Super Bowl title, and still has (barring injury) many more productive years to go.

Honorable Mention: Rob Gronkowski (42nd pick in 2010), Aaron Hernandez (113th pick in 2010), Nate Solder (17th pick in 2011), Sebastian Vollmer (58th pick in 2009), Jerod Mayo (10th pick in 2008), Deion Branch (65th pick in 2002), Matt Light (48th pick in 2001), Logan Mankins (32nd pick in 2005).

Worst
1. Terrence Wheatley, 62nd pick in 2008, only played 12 games in the league.

2. Chad Jackson, 36th pick in 2006, only played 18 games in the league.

3. Marquise Hill, 63rd pick in 2004, only played 13 games. I know his situation is different in that he passed away suddenly and tragically, but if we are evaluating picks, this turned out pretty badly. Kind of like the Len Bias pick (though Bias was far more of a sure thing than Hill)....seemed like a great pick at the time, but for obvious reasons it ended up being bad. I really don't mean this in bad taste.

Ras is a 'Glass Face' Dowling

Obviously first round choices have a much greater impact, but I have always been of the opinion that the Kevin O'Connell draft pick made no sense at all. I did not like it whatsoever at the time, and like it even less with the benefit of hindsight.

I hope that by the end of this season, you have to eat those words.

I'll make my business to remind you.

Chris Canty needed to be on that list. Not including him was a terrible oversight. Agnew had an 11 year NFL career. Putting him on the list and keeping Canty off makes the list useless, IMO.

before there was lawrence maroney, there was reggie dupard

before there was chad jackson there was tony simmons

That would be awesome please do, it could be a feel good story if he can stay on the field and realize some of the his potential.

Can I get a vote for Hart Lee Dykes?

Tony Eason wasn't bad enough to be on the list.

Tavon the Error Repeater Wilson & Duron Who the Feck Is He Harmon.

I think going with recent picks, I would say Chad Jackson was by far the biggest bust. The guy was supposed to be a baller and he couldn't even play himself into spot duty, he then went on to fail on other teams as well.

I will not denigrate guys who couldn't get on the field because of injury. That just sucks for them, injuries happen, sometimes players just do something like tear their ACL without even being touched...what kind of glass weaksauce player tears his ACL without even being touched?

Anyhow, I wouldn't say Maroney was a bust, he had decent production, but in the end, he just couldn't be the bell-cow that the Patriots wanted him to be.

What about Hart Lee (Less) Dykes??? <- worst

and no love for Stanley Morgan...
