Planning for depth is different than planning around predicting the need to replace an injured player. Are you worried that BB hasn't added a viable option at QB since Brady has missed 15 games these last 5 years?

What if BB believes that he doesn't need much of an outside threat at wideout in this TE/inside focused offense?

Or, what if BB believe that Sanders, should he be acquired, or even Amendola, can fulfill that outside role when called upon?

If BB believes that then that is his prerogative, but I can't imagine he feels that way given how teams have beat us in the playoffs due to how hash mark centric our offense is.

They do need more depth at WR, and that's predicted as much or more on talent as it is on the likelihood of injury.

I'm not sure why this is so hard for some people to understand. Let's assume the team gets Sanders...

Split End - Sanders
Slot - Amendola/Edelman
TE1 - Gronk
TE2 - Hernandez
Flanker - Jenkins/Jones

The flanker, is currently being manned by a guy that probably won't make it out of camp or a guy that hasn't done much of anything in the league. Even if Lloyd is brought back, he was not what the team was looking for at that position (especially being that this offense dictates that WR's need to create YAC). AGAIN, he would be best suited in Branch's role. That means that the team still needs to draft a WR. In a deep draft at that position, it doesn't have to come in the first round.

Working under the presumption that Sanders ends up here then draft picks are few and far between. If a wideout doesn't come via picks 1 or 2, then it might not come at all during the draft. And if it does, I'm sure not expecting much contribution from the guy. In fact, I'd feel more confident that the Ebert kid could contribute sooner.

That's fine too but I don't understand why a guy that played inside in Pittsburg and a guy that played inside in St. Louis (both have played outside too) are being depended on to be outside receivers now when they primarily operate inside, especially Amendola. I think Sanders is fine as a number 2 outside guy he won't be a true #1. If everyone is healthy this discussion doesn't matter, but it is unlikely that everyone is healthy.

I would certainly hope that BB isn't focused on assembling his roster by trying to guess the roster health in the future.

As for positional ability of Amendola and Sanders .... if BB ends up believing they can do it then I'm certainly not one to argue with him.

Sure, anything is possible when it coems to adding more picks. It might also be that the Pats need to use their current picks in order to fill other need spots.

As for Ebert and a draft pick comparison ... even if you watch college ball, you have no clue how said college guys skills will translate into the NFL nor do you have any idea how that compares to Ebert today, 1 year experienced in the NFL.

I agree - it'd be a mistake to look at Sanders as the solution to the outside/deep WR issue.

Not that he'd be a bad pickup for a decent price for general WR depth. Belichick likes guys who can play multiple positions, move around, keep the defense guessing and create mismatches.

But if the Steelers are prepared to match Sanders offersheet (as we think they are) then it was still worthwhile for Belichick to drive up his price a bit for a conference rival.
