RB Danny Woodhead gone, signs with Chargers

It's not that puzzling. With the Washington signing, there just wasn't a roster spot for him. They weren't going to keep all three of Washington, Veeren, and Woodhead.

What has Washington ever done in the passing and run game?

Pretty sure this indicates the team believes Vereen can replicate and hopefully improve on Woodhead's production.

Washington is a dynamic player who can catch the ball and run routes. Just because he was not asked to do it often, does not mean he cannot do it. What did Woodhead ever do before coming to the Patriots?

Oh and it is Vereen who will be the primary 3rd down back.

I'd rather have Ridley, and Vereen as 1,2 with the rest of the guys as backups, garbage-time backs.

If Vereen isn't significantly better than Woodhead next season I'll be disappointed. We've got a glut of mediocre running backs to fill the 3-5 spots already -- we don't need Woodhead

And I'd rather they use the 1.75m saved on improving a defense spot (getting a 4m player instead of a 2m player)

I thought I've read that we did want Woody back. Sometimes a player can choose to go elsewhere. Maybe he wanted to live in the warm weather for a change.

That is chump change money we could have paid for a guy who played 33% of all offensive snaps the last two years:

Closer look at RB playing time - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Washington got basically Woodhead's money...Woodhead is a waaay better RB and especially as a 3rd down RB, the only advantage Washington has is KR.

Very disappointing.

How in the world is Woodhead a "waaay better RB" than Washington? He wasn't really utilized by the Seahawks on offense, but he had pretty good production with the Jets. Woodhead was a good player for the Patriots, but Leon Washington is infinitely better than he is at returning kicks, and Vereen adds an element of explosiveness to our offense than Woodhead could only dream of providing. It's a good thing that Shane will get more snaps.

Mediocre and Woodhead in the same sentence.

FAIL.

Just take a look at his time with the Jets and you'll see a guy who, aside from being an elite kick returner, had very good production as a 3rd down back. And that was without Tom Brady running the offense.

The Seahawks just didn't utilize him in that role too much, mainly because Marshwan Lynch stayed on the field on third down a lot of the time.

Danny Woodhead. A tried and trusted 3rd down back.

Shane Vereen. Plenty of potential. Neither tried or totally trusted.

If he was any good at it still he would've been asked to do it. Maybe you're right but at 30 it's doubtful he's as effective as Woodhead.

I keep hearing Vereen is more 'explosive' and 'dynamic' when his real claim to fame is beating a LB on a sideline catch.

Oh and worse measurables in almost every way and a lack of consistent production so far.

I can't fathom how people claim Woodhead is not explosive.

Yeah, sure, Vereen didn't really show off any of that potential last year down the stretch.

I'm sure you would rather have kept BJGE as our starting RB than letting him go in favor of Ridley too, right?

This offense needs playmakers. Woodhead was a solid player, and that's it. Vereen shone on the few opportunities he had and provided a dynamic factor that the Patriots offense has been sorely lacking in recent years. Of his 70 touches, there were at least 5 plays he made Woodhead couldn't ever even dream of making.

His lack of consistent production is due to the fact he had fewer opportunities. Yeah, he beat a LB on a sideline catch. And he had the 83 yarder against the Jets. When has Woodhead ever done something even close to that?

Leon Washington wasn't asked to be the 3rd down back in Seattle because Marshawn Lynch is one of the best RBs in football and he has good hands and is solid in pass protection. Why would you take him out of the field?

I said Vereen had potential. he showed last year in flashes.

Woodhead has a 3 year history of showing it, and is a charger now under a very team friendly contract.

And I never said anything about Ridley/BJGE. Way to muddy the waters.

I think Woodhead is going to prove to be a big addition for the chargers...scrappy guy who trys 110% out there

I am surprised that people who watched Vereen play last season would not want him to get more snaps. Woodhead was in the way, I feel that Vereen has much more big play ability than Woodhead, just by watching him carry the ball.

Woodhead got more snaps because he has more experience, was better in reading the blitzes and running the correct routes. We can only hope that Vereen is ready to step up and own those things this season.

But, as far as pure athletic talent, running the ball, catching the ball, running with power, balance, and quickness. Vereen just looked like he was playing at a different level

What did you not like about him as a player? He came in the game and generally made an impact most of the time! He was one of the only bright parts of the SB and was practically carrying the offense on his back there!!.....If the D could have held on at the end Woody could have been the game MVP!!! I think he is an awesome talent and can do so many things well. Very durable, alot of guts....perfect Patriot.....Wish him the best of luck. Vereen on the other hand has been VERY inconsistent, initially had trouble learning the playbook.....and couldn't stay healthy early on...that is why he was "slowed in his development." Vereen better step it up this year.....or Washington will be taking his place...!

I personally didn't like seeing him in there on short yardage situations in the red zone...but that's not on him. He certainly wasn't breaking any tackles...you could knock him over with a feather. Nice story and you knew it was only a matter of time before the Pats moved on. I'm glad he left on his terms.

2 of the smallest players on the team are now gone, yet it seems like we're less physical
& tough than ever before.

Loved this guy, sorry to see him go,good luck with the Chargers..
