Tim Thomas traded to NY Islanders

Not that I care much about hockey, but I understand why this is big news for those who follow the Bruins. Man...what a mess that whole thing turned out to be...:frusty:

Reports are that he still doesn't plan to play this season. This has all the earmarks of it being strictly a cap move. Supposedly, the Islanders needed to get above the cap floor.

My post from the BRUINS FORUM

Tim Thomas traded to the NY Islanders for a conditional 2nd round pick in 14' or 15'.
Salary cap move for the Islanders ... could be one for us also ... we'll see.
Thomas will not play this season ... we may never see that pick but who cares.

If Thomas plays for the Islanders or elsewhere due to a future trade we get the pick.

Thanks for the Stanley Cup Tim. :americaflag:

The condition though is that Thomas plays at least one game for the team. Since that’s unlikely to happen, the deal is all about swapping cap dollars rather than tangible assets.

Although Thomas refused to play for Boston this season, his $5 million cap hit counted against the Bruins because he signed his deal as a 35-or-older player. This then gives a team that was crunched for cap space plenty of room to take on a significant salary ahead of the trade deadline.

Already, speculation is swirling about the team’s desire to add secondary scoring, with Jarome Iginla believed to be a prime target.

But really, this was a deal that had to be made by the Islanders. Thomas’ hit ensures they will avoid fines that would have kicked in Friday associated with being below the NHL’s salary cap.

Strictly salary cap related. Bruins pick up around 2.8(prorated) in cap relief. And Islanders get about salary floor.

Way to keep up Katie ...

To be fair, Katie probably didn't pull that picture.

And at least whoever did come up with that didn't put up a picture of Afailius. :p

This thread is funny. Yeah it's long but show some ESPN mess ups with pictures and a lot of photoshops that are fantastic
