Fletcher, quick as a rabbit there

Probably knows he's going to have more of an opportunity here than anywhere else, I'd think.

Anyway, good depth signing. Not much not to like.

Just what was missing this past season is a a smaller, faster (at least compared to the other LBs on the roster) who can drop into coverage. He isn't ideal for that role, but he could rotate in there on passing downs.

Grist for the mill...........

Very nice. Prsumable we've locked him up for a couple of years at least. Our LB group right now looks like Mayo, Hightower, Spikes, Fletcher and Tarpinian/Rivera. Not a bad starting point.

At one point in 2011 it seemed like Fletcher was ahead of Brandon Spikes on the depth chart. He has ability. Locking him up past this year would also add some flexibility in terms of Brandon Spikes' long term situation.

I've read it's only for one year (Reiss tweet I believe).

POSITION: Gronk's roommate. Quite the pair! Fletcher's almost Ohrnberger-esque on Twitter, by the way. Sample:

I like my women like I like my coffee... Colombian and full of tequila!

I can only imagine the outrage if Spikes had tweeted that.

Good news, Fletcher knows this defense and has some upside. Pretty standard for the Patriots to start of their offseason with this kind of signing, start shoring up the depth first and get the easier deals done before getting on with bigger matters.

Solid depth for the LB position, good special teamer with high motor. Gotta like this, IMHO.

Can the HOOMAN be far behind?

Down on the guy. Had liked him but we do NOT need guys on the 53/46 who turtle in playoff games. Minimum vet contract for camp health insurance vs some new UDFA TE prospects.

Grist for the mill...........

Coach Belichick likes Dane Fletcher - a lot. Belichick said the following of Fletcher in December 2010:

“Dane’s in a very unusual situation, it’s a short list of players who have gone from being defensive linemen to being inside linebackers that I’ve worked with: Harry Carson would be one, Tedy Bruschi would be two, and Dane would be a third example of that.

Most of the time, those guys go from being defensive ends in college to outside linebackers at our level. To take a defensive lineman to an inside linebacker position, it’s a much bigger challenge, to go from a defensive lineman to a guy that has coverage responsibilities, formation responsibilities, to seeing the game from your feet, and from depth, as opposed to seeing it this far away from you, [that is] the guy across from you. It’s a whole different ballgame, and there’s not a lot of players that can do that. Dane’s done a good job of it. He obviously has a long way to go, he’s nowhere close to being a finished product, but the progress that he’s made from the spring, to training camp, to in-season has been significant, enough that we’re going to continue to work with him there and he’s contributed for us.

Dane was good in the kicking game, he was active, and that enabled him to get a bigger role on the defensive side of the ball, he’s been able to capitalize on some of those opportunities."

Harry Carson and Tedy Bruschi all rolled into one? Good enough for me.
