The 2013 Prospect Thread

Just found out Andre Tippet's nephew is currently a freshman LB at Stanford...

Not that it has anything to do with the 2013 draft, but still...

I knew there were games but I never checked them out. Can I find any game I want?

Here are the ones I've found:

thornsx's channel - YouTube

Generally uploads three to four games a week - mainly big TV games, not many minnows here. Quality isn't the best but certainly watchable. Not great for scouting because it's hard to pick out the player you're scouting on longer distance shots.

Tony Pauline thinks that not 1 but 2 guards will be top 15 picks in the 2013 draft, according to his current take on Jonathan Cooper, who he lists in this week's Risers and Sliders:

Jonathan Cooper, G -- North Carolina: Cooper received first round grades from scouts prior to the season and has surpassed expectations on the field this year. He was stamped as the premiere zone-blocking lineman in the nation and Cooper has expanded his game in 2012. The athletic guard improved his power at the point of attack and now displays the ability to beat down defenders on the line of scrimmage as well as annihilating opponents blocking in motion. Cooper will be the second guard selected in April 's draft after Alabama's Chance Warmack. He is unlikely to make it out of the draft's initial 15 choices.

Pauline also broke my heart by dropping this little bomb:

Kyle Long, OL -- Oregon: Long is rarely mentioned outside scouting circles, but the junior college transfer is quickly rising up draft boards. The athletic lineman blocks with terrific fundamentals and shows tremendous skill blocking in motion. He offers potential at both offensive tackle and guard, and like his father Howie Long, figures to be selected somewhere inthe middle of Round 2.

It was inevitable. Scouts basically never miss on guys with obvious talent.

The only time I feel like I not only bested the media, but also NFL scouts, is when I called Antonio Brown the most underrated prospect of the draft. I still don't understand why he was a 6th rounder. Great speed, insane change of direction skills, good with the ball in his hands, quickness gives him the potential to be an elite route runner, over 300 career receptions (left as a junior), and the only player in NCAA history with multiple seasons with at least 100 receptions.

Beyond that? My other success stories with sleepers include Alterraun Verner, K.J. Wright, kinda Sean Lee (Kuechly like when healthy), and, eventually, Delano Howell (undrafted rookie safety who's preseason was absolutely perfect). But with all of these guys, I could understand the skepticism of the scouts. The fact that Brown was a 6th rounder made me think scouts were dumb. But, they aren't. And they'll notice guys like Long every time

I expected Long to rise. But Pauline saying a mid-2nd rounder caught me by surprise. That's a big predicted jump. Just a few weeks ago Gil Brandt was going out on a limb by saying that he would be drafted. I expected him to move up, but not so fast so quickly.

My best call was probably Richard Sherman. Thought he would be a stud, and he is. But better than I imagined, at least this fast. Also more of a jerk, but that's another story.

And again, scouts may not miss, but teams don't always listen to their scouts.

Anyone else interested in drafting Matt Barkley if he falls to the 3rd round?

Maybe. But William Gholston has probably cost himself more with inconsistent play, lack of development, and character issues. All of that, plus a relationship to Vernon Gholston, is a lot of baggage.

I'll bet you a dollar he won't be a second rounder.

He's going to be 24 in December, has off the field issues, and can't beat out a freshmen at LT so he's starting at left guard, but Pauline probably doesn't know that.

He's not a 7th ronder anymore, but good find anyway.

My take was that he would rise up past a late day 3 pick to an early day 3 pick, possibly a late 3rd round pick. Mid 2nd seems awfully high.

A-ha. Did you notice who was second after Cooper:

Leon McFadden, CB -- San Diego State: McFadden has been steadily rising up draft boards since the start of the season and is another who is exceeding expectations in 2012. He's a feisty cornerback with next-level size and the ball skills to match. McFadden has intercepted three passes this season, broken up 10 throws and has 57 tackles to his credit. He continues to improve on the field and several scouts feel McFadden will be a top-75 pick in next year's draft.

My first two picks in my last mock, were the first two names in Tony Pauline's list. I'd say great minds think alike, but he's a Jets fan so I won't.

I haven't seen many ND games or players, but to those that have; what do you think of Louis Nix III?

Thanks. I usually record all the big games but I'll save this post anyway.

I don't know what that means. I record them with my DVR cable box.

tenyardtorrents is a site where you can download almost any football game for free. However there are some conditions. You need to "seed" back to the community - effectively this means that you make the files you've downloaded available for others to download their files in part from your computer. That sounds scary, it's not in truth but before you sign up, you should research torrenting for your own piece of mind. I'm not an expert but I'll help as much as I can.

To give you some examples, there are currently 17 games available from last nights play to download, I've been able to download two San Diego State games, a team I haven't been able to find before, there are about 40 Patriots games from the 70's-90's available to download and I've just rewatched last years draft and so much more.

Get an idea of bittorrent here:

looks solid, the ND defense is tied for 1st in PPG with 'Bama, Te'o is the heart and sole of that D, but they have a lot of good players. They are very good against the run, only 2 rushing TDs all season, very strong up the middle with Nix, Te'o and Motta.

Optimum Scouting on Jonathan Cooper:

-On the offensive side of the ball for North Carolina, Jonathan Cooper continued to impress, again placing his name alongside Alabama’s Chance Warmack’s as legitimate first round prospects. Cooper’s elite movement skills and overall athleticism have been well documented, but, versus Virginia, he demonstrated improved lower body power and drive blocking ability, including multiple pancake blocks in the run game. He still plays too high, has an average initial punch, and gets his hands outside his opponent’s frame in pass protection, but he plays with a consistently wide base, handles stunts seamlessly, and anchors like a bull; no UVA rusher got a sniff of UNC quarterback Bryn Renner through Cooper all game. And, in space, he remains exceptional, displaying the ability to help-block, then release and neutralize second level UVA defenders; and he made one truly remarkable play, when he chipped on Virginia’s nose tackle, then exploded upfield and took out a safety in the deep third, with an athletic cut-block.

That's a bit surprising that Pauline thinks that way on Long considering that I believe he was saying he was a late rounder a week or so ago,.

Over at Jets Insider, the draft board is administered by Tony_TFY (Jets Insider is part of Draftinsider.net, Paulines little updated draft blog). This character is constantly talking about his appearences on videos at sportsillustrated so I'm pretty sure it's Tony Pauline.

Anyway, a fortnight ago, he was asked:

Hey Tony - Kyle Long at the moment what round do you see Him going in next year
Draft? Look real impressive versus USC. Thoughts and opinion on the prospect. Thanks

His reply:

late rounder at best...the SC defense is awful, so don't get overly excited about the performance...

Hey Tony - Kyle Long at the moment what round do you see Him going in next year

Either he's got some new information in the last two weeks from insiders related to how scouts and decision makers view Long or Pauline thinks Long has had two amazing games in the last two weeks.

Certainly an interesting about face.

The other fascinating nugget is this on Ogletree:

1) better not move out of the top ten if you want a shot at Ogletree, though early word is he may stay for another year.....

Yikes!!

Alec Ogletree
