How much can Aqib Talib help our Secondary?

The culture of the winning franchise in the league is what you assess as the 'problem'? Interesting

Worst 6-3 team that lost the superbowl last season in the league... can't argue with that now can you? The timing of that worst fans in the league article sure was opportune.

There's two issues with the secondary. Poor tackling and guys who get beat deep.

I tend to think Talib will not allow himself to get beat deep very often. That's a help, especially in preventing the big deep play.

But the entire secondary needs to do a better job with tackling. If they don't the problems will continue.

Poor tackling was only a problem in the Bills game, actually. Aside from that, it was one of the few things the secondary was doing well.

Let's hope the coaches let Talib play instead of ruining the guy like they have with every other potential talent we've drafted and brought in to the secondary.

Get some legitimate coaches in here and change the damn scheme. It's like any job and profession. People are normally evaluated semi-annually and reviewed, why isn't that being done here by BB ?

So, now the coach who has won or tied for the division title for the last 11 years in a row doesn't evaluate his coaches and players???????

Well ultimately it is asinine that any of us are commenting on football since the dumbest football coach you can name knew more than all of us put together. So if you're going to pull that card it sorta invalidates the point of this whole forum.

The current favorite patsfan narrative is that we've drafted tons of studs who have all been 'ruined' by being coached to play in phase as they have. I have to believe, considering that O'Neal, Starks, Wheatley, Wilhite, Butler, etc haven't gone on to play lights out somewhere else that our defensive backfield issues are a combination of scheme and skill.

But I do think questioning this defense after so many years of porous pass defense is fair.

What makes you say he hasnt? BB's not an idiot, I think he knows the secondary isnt playing up to par, if he was happy with it he wouldnt have traded for Talib.

I agree. It's appalling what we Pats fans have had to put up with over the past 5 years. We should be entitled to the same high quality play as fans of teams in Cleveland, Jacksonville and Tennessee.

What I imagine people think is going to happen:

DB Coach said:
Ok Talib, you got to stop turning your head.

No! Stop it! Why are you touching the receiver! Don't turn around until he's in the catching motion!

Regarding the Belichick years...

  1. Please list the high quality secondary players who've been at that level prior to coming to New England, but have been ruined in the Patriots system.
  2. Please list the Patriots DB draft picks who've gone on to great success after failing in New England.
  3. Please explain the specific flaws you think you see that are not things deliberately taught by Belichick.
  4. Understanding that simply taking a different approach than what you would prefer is not a coaching error, please tell us, specifically, which in-game DB errors this year have been coaching errors as opposed to player errors or general execution errors.

By way of contrast, I would argue that talented players they have brought in, such as Ty Law, Asante Samuel, Rodney Harrison and Lawyer Malloy, all played their best football with the NEP. The evidence points more to the lack of talent on the field than the inability of the teachers. Talib brings a talent boost and should be an obvious upgrade to the beleaguered secondary.

I see, so Wade Phillips and his secondary coaches can coach up and scheme up mediocre secondary talent (outside of J Joseph), yet we can't for some reason because of our piss poor drafting of DB talent? Is that the issue ?

No, the issue is you me asking you responsive questions and you not answering them.

The issue of Wade Phillips is just a red herring tossed out by people who don't understand, or choose to ignore, the significant defensive changes that Houston made.

In 2010
No JJ Watt
No J. Joseph
No D. Manning
No Barwin for 15 games
Different defensive base
Kareem Jackson was a rookie
Troy Nolan was a rookie
Starting MLB lost after 6 games
Glover Quin not moved to S, was playing CB
Bernard Pollard, weak cover S, playing S

All of that was changed by 2011. Phillips was by no means the only major difference besides Joseph.

I believe the team has until 4pm today to activate Talib to the active roster

1 1/2 hours to go...the clock is ticking

Someone posted the Patriots got a roster exemption so they can have him without making a cut until Monday.
