The 2013 Prospect Thread

Johnny Manziel in 2016?

Johnny Manziel in 2016?

The game makes me wonder whether the top A & M guys come out. Joeckel, Matthews and Damontre Moore are all underclassmen and if it wasn't for two poor second half performances this year, TAMU would be the No 1 team. With Manziel a year more mature and the confidence that a first successful SEC campaign brings to the program, I wonder if Nat. Championship becomes a factor in considering whether to come out or not. I know Moore has suggested he'll stay but it won't be good for the first round if both tackles stay or our chances of re-signing Vollmer (possibly).

I struggle to think of anyone who deserves the Heisman this year. Collin Klein sucks, but he has amazing coaches. Same goes for Kenjon Barner. Manti Te'o has been good, but not Heisman good. At this point, I think Manziel has been the most outstanding player in college football. Tough choice

I haven't been able to get any new McCoil film. What's he look like?

Again, last year, his film wasn't impressive to the untrained eye. He lacked toughness, his instincts were mediocre, and he needed strength. That being said, I have never seen a safety with a combination of size, range, and ball skills that even rivals McCoil.

Haven't seen that film. OTOH, Georgia's defense has skyrocketed since your boy Ogletree has come back. I am impressed. Georgia is finally playing up to its potential, and may be the best team in the SEC right now. It will be interesting to see how they stack up against Alabama in the SEC Championship game.

Couple of interesting tidbit's from Tony Pauline's latest risers and sliders:

Ra'Shede Hageman, DL -- Minnesota: Hageman, a former tight end, is in the midst of a breakout season and has scouts salivating. Lining up on the nose of Minnesota's four-man line, Hageman displays the ability to control the line of scrimmage or make plays in the opponents' backfield. He's totaled 6½ tackles for loss and five sacks this season and Hageman is still developing on the defensive line. The junior is likely to enter the draft and expected to be a top 120 choice.

Margus Hunt, DL -- SMU: Hunt is another defensive line prospect whose future potential excites scouts. Hailing from the nation of Estonia, Hunt enrolled at SMU as a champion shot putter and discus thrower before turning to football. Despite no highschool experience on the football field, Hunt set an NCAA record with seven blocked kicks as a freshman. He's posted a career-best six sacks thus far this season and has shown consistent development in his game. Hunt is a freakish athlete with incredible size and the ability to play any of three positions on the defensive line. He entered the season with late-round grades but could now slide into the late part of the third frame.

Week 11 - Tony Pauline - SI.com

Hunt's been off everyone's radar, but could be a nice value pick. Hagemannhas great size at 6'6" 300#. He seems pretty serious about considering the 2013 draft:

Gophers' Ra'Shede Hageman says an early exit to the NFL is worth considering - TwinCities.com

Hunt and Hageman are nice alternatives to Ziggy Ansah as guys who could probably play both inside and out in 4-3 fronts and outside in a 3-4, and who could get some push up the middle.

I am slowly falling in love with Kyle Long... looked like a first rounder against USC

I am slowly falling in love with Kyle Long... looked like a first rounder against USC

Shhhhh......

He's THE official late round binkie here.

Yup. But the cat's getting out of the bag. From Dane Brugler's latest risers and faller's list:

If there is one thing we have learned from past drafts, is that the NFL loves bloodlines. If a prospect is related to someone who played at the professional level in any capacity, that's a big plus. The NFL is full of football families with the Mannings (Archie, Petyon, Eli) and the Matthews (Clay Sr, Clay Jr, Bruce, Clay III, Casey, Kevin) probably the most recognizable. But the Longs are about to send another family member to the NFL. Kyle Long, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Howie and younger brother of Rams' edge rusher Chris, isn't a top prospect or defensive player like his elder kin. A two-sport athlete in high school, he decided to play baseball at Florida State and with a mid-90s fastball as a lefty, who could blame him for choosing his first love. But that only lasted a year as he struggled with academics and spent too much time partying, resulting in a DUI arrest. After returning home, Kyle enrolled at Saddleback Junior College and later transferred to Oregon, moving from defensive end to the offensive line. With one final season of eligibility remaining, he has yet to start a game for the Ducks in 2012, but has seen extensive action with each week, playing most of Saturday's game at left guard for Oregon. He is still very raw, but according to his father and brother, Kyle was blessed with the most natural talent of the three and the NFL will love his upside. Not even ranked entering the season, Kyle is moving up draft boards and will add another name to the Long's NFL family tree.

NFL Draft Risers and Fallers - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

The damn draft is held 6 months too early. It should be held in October. Every year we pick out guys months ahead of everyone else, and then slowly the media catches on. Few words make me gnash my teeth as much as "moving up draft boards".

The thought of of what Dante Scarnecchia could do with Kyle Long makes me ... well, I won't say it. But imagine an OT core of Solder, Vollmer and Long. Awe inspiring.

'hey Kyle...KYLE, that gorgeous blonde from our behavioral psychology made these for you, she wishes you luck at the combine next week"

Kiko Alonso also looks like a top 75 pick

It doesn't matter when the draft is held.
I'm going to let you guys in on a secret. The media, especially Todd McShay (Kiper is okay, but not good either) has absolutely no idea what the hell it is talking about. However, actual scouts and general managers ignore the media. They find these guys just as quickly as you do. And, obviously, scouts and general managers are the only ones who make the real decisions. I recognize all of the guys you talk about as well. But I don't consider myself a member of the media. I watch 300 college football games a year. I'm a scout. The media is always slow to catch on. Even in my first year as a scout, as a 13 year old, I was months ahead of the media in calling Linval Joseph a second round pick. There is no point in keeping secrets. People who actually work for NFL teams recognize these guys as quickly or maybe even more quickly than you do. Trust me.

Also; the media was WAY too quick to get on Bjoern Werner's bandwagon. Absolutely no chance he is a top 10 pick.

Well I hope the NFL scouts feel more like you do than I do.

Talent wise maybe, but he won't be with his off the field issues. He's also a little inconsistent from one game to the next.

It's no secret. We're just joking around.

Absolutely. I refuse to believe that teams last year in the final weeks before the draft suddenly thought "you know that Chandler Jones and Shea McLellin, they're actually rather good". Dramatic risers and fallers according to the likes of Tony Pauline and Dane Brugler are only snippets of information they glean from their contacts within teams.

We won't get a headstart on the teams, but what we should do is combine our respective wisdoms, publish it in October and look smarter than the media does in the run up to draft day.

I don't consider myself a scout, evaluator or anything like, I'm an amateur with an unhealthy interest in the draft. Mayo and Merrill and others are probably the same. Mackenzie is different because he gets work (paid or otherwise) for his scouting. Now i apologise to others who have contributed but just combining some of mine, Merrill's and Mayo's collective "wisdom", let's see what we've come up with:

Merrill and I both heavily touted Mark Barron last year when the media were still talking of him as a second rounder or late first at best.

Merrill and Mayo are strong advocates of Dion Jordan when media outlets had him in the 2nd-3rd range. He's getting more and more talk as a mid to high first rounder.

Mayo is very high on Jesse Williams. CBS have moved him from mid-second to mid first.

I talked about Alec Ogletree and Sheldon Richardson weeks ago. It's only now that they're being talked of as mid-first rounders.

I was very high on Mychal Kendricks last year. so was OTG and Mayo. His value skyrocketed into the 2nd round.

We'' probably see much of the same this year. Mayo and I have been talking about Carradine for a while now, he's moving north. Mayo and Merrill have been on Kyle Long long before Dane Brugler published anything. Markus Wheaton is getting increased chatter and will likely move north.

The point is not that we are genius scouts although I think we have some small abilities in that area, the point is that we put some effort in. I'm not saying we are the first to recognise these people but we do seem to be ahead of the curve on a lot of big risers (not all mind). I do think however that we tend to benefit from a lack of accountability and a scatter shot effect. We don't have professional reputations on the line so it's easier to nail our mast to a particular favourite prospect with a lower confidence level than professional writers. Secondly, and I know I'm guilty of this, the more prospects you highlight, the greater the chance you'll hit on someone.

Anyway, that's my "haven't slept for 24 hours" analysis for what it's worth.

NB - I tried to be fair in the above list but probably over highlighted my own successes. That's just familiarity talking, not an effort to sell my own successes.

Also; the media was WAY too quick to get on Bjoern Werner's bandwagon. Absolutely no chance he is a top 10 pick.

Respectfully disagree. The most complete edge player in the draft. Would take him ahead of Mingo, Moore and definitely Jarvis Jones.
