The 2013 Prospect Thread

Honest question: Why does it matter what anyone would do in retrospect?

I'm obviously not explaining myself very well because that's not the point. I was merely conducting a thought experiment to test Mayo's assertion that he wouldn't draft a WR in the first round or top 5. Welker is obviously close to home and so served as a useful example. I suppose I could have said: "If a prospect WR you were as certain as you could possibly be was going to be as good as Welker or Calvin Johnson was available with your pick in the first round, would you draft him?"

It's all about value. Running back is the least valuable but wide receiver is second IMO. I would draft a WR in the first round and I would even draft one in the top five, but it would have to be one hell of a receiver. None of last years WR prospects warranted the pick they were selected with. The last receiver that warranted a first round pick was Julio Jones.

I know Mayo Clinic subscribes to the inside out philosophy of roster building. QB is first, always, but after that the distance away from the ball indicates the positions value.

My philosophy is different and a little more complicated (or more simple depending on how you look at it) than the his, but neither of us value wide receivers that much.

I want one this year though. Lloyd can't be the only good WR on next years roster.

I would love to FA sign Jared Cook as outside TE/WR ( deep-threat ) - He's 6-5 around 245 and 4.4 on a 40 dash. He's not the best blocker or stadnart TE, but as the missing deap piece i think he could be nice ( and cheap )

Draft Reed and use him in a mix with Hernandez.

That would give us: Gronk, Aaron, Reed, Cook, Fells, Ballard and mayby Hoomanawanui.

Could line up with: #1 Outside Cook, Ballard and Gronk in the middle and #2 Hernandez and Woody / Demps in backfield.

Hurry up offense where ppl can't sub... The Nightmares can start.

And we could make the 5 TE set as ppl yelling to see...

What is your philosophy for that matter? Mine is based on impact, the degree to which a player effects others, on both sides of the ball, rather than on position.

I'm doing my horizontal mock. Too early to rank em 1-32. I have 20 defensive players in there. Could make a case for a couple more.

QB - Matt Barkley and Geno Smith
RB - None
WR - Robert Woods, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins and J. Hunter
TE - Tyler Eiffert
OT - L. Joeckel, J. Matthews and T. Lewan
G - C. Warmack and J. Cooper
C - None

DE - S. Montgomery, M. Bingo, B. Werner, A. Okafor, D. Jordan and D. Moore
DT - J. Hankins, S. Lotulelei, J. Jenkins and S. Floyd
LB - J. Jones, M. Te'o and CJ Mosely
CB - J. Banks, J. Adams, X. Rhodes, D. Milliner
S - E. Reid, M. Elam and T. Jefferson

I like Barrett Jones. Just not sure he's a 1st rounder. Don't know if Fluker is suited to play T in the NFL. Tyler Wilson and Landry Jones have not impressed. Lattimore got hurt. L. Bell - mich st isn't having a great year. Prob not his fault. Lousy offense. Terrance Williams could go late 1st. I'll say 2nd. T. Austin is a jitterbug. NFL teams don't usually draft receivers his size early.

Still some good prospects on the defensive line. At tackle still have, K. Short, J. Williams(NG) and Sylvester Williams. At de you still have Carradine - FSU, D. Taylor, M. Buchanan and Corey Lemonier. A couple of under the radar guys are Brandon Jenkins - FSU - DE. Got hurt and missed the season. Many thought he might sneak into the first last year. Jordan Hill - DT - PSU. He's lost some weight and playing the 3 technique. He just sprained his knee saturday and will prob miss Nebraska game. No bowl game. So, should get a chance to show his stuff in post-season games. A couple of safeties have slipped in my eyes; TJ McDonald, K. Vaccarro, B. Rambo. Same with D. Amerson - CB - NC St. I don't like the way Ogletree - lb from Georgia plays. Too soft. I do like K. Greene - Rutgers - lb.
Mauti is getting all of the pub at PSU, but Gerald Hodges is a better pro prospect. He can run and packs a wallop. Oh, almost forgot Chase Thomas - olb - Stanford. Could be a candidate for that LDE down the road.

Hindsight is 20/20. Therefore is you determine that a WR was worth a 1st round pick in a previous draft you know there is a possibility of a WR worth a 1st in future drafts. Personally I'm rooting for a re-signed Welker and a late round flyer on WR.

Agree. Wes Welker has given us 6 years of hall of fame play. Yes, hall of fame play. Why wouldn't we want to keep him? If we get two more outstanding years, fantastic. Even if slips a little in the 3rd. Should get 3/24m. A lot of it being guaranteed. Prob 16m. A good signing bonus 8m and the first year guaranteed at 8m, then 4m each of the last two.

As much as I want a talent like Austin or Allen out of Cal I'd like to see how they address Welker first. Also hoping for Talib to kick some butte out there and earn an extension.

I'm thinking guard would be the safest pick in this draft. With Scar he can turn 5th,6th 7th rd as well as undrafted players into serviceable to very solid lineman. When they decide to go oline in the first 2 rounds it gives Scar someone physically gifted to mold to elite. See Light,Vollmer,Solder. It's a real need and there are 4 prospects that I think would be shoe ins for this team.

Good list

1. Is M. Bingo a typo or someone new? Don't worry, type those all the time.

2. No Terrance Williams is interesting. I like Hopkins a lot but I think Williams has the potential to be the second or third WR taken overall.

3. Surprised you have Johnny Adams in there. Are these your personal rankings? He's being talked of as a late rounder amongst the evaluators I follow. I haven't watched him yet so will be interesting to know your thoughts on him.

Yeah, should be Barkevious Mingo - DE - LSU. I never get that kid's name right. I probably watch more Big 10 games than is healthy for you. I'm a PSU grad. Like to keep up on the league. Adams seems to play well in the games I watch. Of course, I can probably out run many wr's in the league. And, I just turned 51. I thought Hopkins stepped it up when Sammy Watkins was suspended. I'm just skeptical of everything I see in the Big 12. Zero defense in that league. I know the ACC isn't much better. But, when a wr runs free into the secondary with nobody covering him. I don't really think it's a good play by him.

NFL Draft Risers and Fallers - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

The Crimson Tide defense has stars at every level. The anchor of the nation's No. 1 scoring defense (9.1 yards/game) is Williams, a nose tackle who some have overlooked. A native of Brisbane, Australia, the senior played mostly defensive end last season and since making the transition to the zero-technique spot in the spring, Williams has been playing like a seasoned vet. He plays with outstanding upper body and hand strength to control blockers with the base power to hold his ground at the point. Williams has surprising speed in pursuit with the feet in the trenches to quickly gain position and halt plays between the tackles. Against LSU on Saturday, he finished with a career-high seven tackles, including one for loss, and when he wasn't recording stats, he was still being disruptive and altering the offensive game plan. Williams, who originally signed with Hawaii out of high school, went the JUCO route and arrived in Tuscaloosa in 2011, starting every game for the Tide. He has even seen some snaps on offense in goal line situations as a lead fullback and with his rugby background, he hopes to get his hands on the ball. At 6-3, 320, he has the muscle and agile feet to line up in any defensive scheme and his performance against LSU was just another reminder why he is being mentioned as a potential 2013 first-round pick.

If there is one thing we have learned from past drafts, is that the NFL loves bloodlines. If a prospect is related to someone who played at the professional level in any capacity, that's a big plus. The NFL is full of football families with the Mannings (Archie, Petyon, Eli) and the Matthews (Clay Sr, Clay Jr, Bruce, Clay III, Casey, Kevin) probably the most recognizable. But the Longs are about to send another family member to the NFL. Kyle Long, the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Howie and younger brother of Rams' edge rusher Chris, isn't a top prospect or defensive player like his elder kin. A two-sport athlete in high school, he decided to play baseball at Florida State and with a mid-90s fastball as a lefty, who could blame him for choosing his first love. But that only lasted a year as he struggled with academics and spent too much time partying, resulting in a DUI arrest. After returning home, Kyle enrolled at Saddleback Junior College and later transferred to Oregon, moving from defensive end to the offensive line. With one final season of eligibility remaining, he has yet to start a game for the Ducks in 2012, but has seen extensive action with each week, playing most of Saturday's game at left guard for Oregon. He is still very raw, but according to his father and brother, Kyle was blessed with the most natural talent of the three and the NFL will love his upside. Not even ranked entering the season, Kyle is moving up draft boards and will add another name to the Long's NFL family tree.

Reid is falling. He hasn't looked like the same player he was last season.

With Claiborne and Mathieu gone I think he has had to play a different role and also tries to do too much.

I'd take Elam well ahead of him. I think Reid will be a longtime NFL player but I wouldn't want to use a first on him.

Was Chris Thompson (FSu RB) looking like a draftee before his injury? If so, anybody know where he was being talked about?

Was being talked of as a late round change of pace back.

New rankings are out at CBS

NFL Draft - 2013 NFL Draft Prospects - CBSSports.com - NFLDraftScout.com

Some interesting ones

17. Jesse Williams

20. Sheldon Richardson

34. Matt Elam

37. Robert Woods

48. Tavon Austin

51. Ezekiel Ansah

54. Terrence Williams

I can have Cooper & Williams!!! (-ish)

Question. Josh Norris had Matt elam going top 10 to the Titans. Personally I think he's the best safety in the draft and could see him going first round but does anyone think he's top 10 good?

There are barely any safeties this year worth 1st round consideration much less top 10.

I don't want to see Jesse Williams rise too much more. I think there are enough DT's that he will still make it to the early 2nd (in a trade down situation).
