Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

It seems like coaching since they have the same problems no matter who they throw out there.

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

Since most seem to regress....I vote coaching

I'd say both. If it was purely coaching, wouldn't guys like Merriweather, Butler, Wilhite have had more success on their new teams?

It is truly embarassing to watch games with people who don't like the Patriots. When we got it, ahead by 6, with around 3 minutes to go, I knew we were going to lose.

When we are ahead by fewer than 7, and get the ball with 3-4 minutes, we lose. We do the following:
a) Go 3 and out because of horrible play calling and execution.
b) Give up ridiculous pass plays on double covered players.
c) Give up a touchdown.
d) Lose

It's almost like watching a car crash you know is about to happen, you want to look away but cannot do it.

It's the vanilla scheme they have been running since Mangini left. When he left our philosophy changed and thus in the course of 5 years have had tremendous secondary issues no matter who we draft! We need to downgrade Patricia to Linebacker coach and hire a competent defensive coach to get more exotic schemes and looks to cover up our patchy secondary. Right now any QB can read our defense with ease and thus why the Russell Wilsons of the world can torch us.

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

When there is no penalty for failure, failure proliferates.

Fire Josh Boyer.

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

Even if our secondary was made up of all Revis's, we would still get torched especially if QB's know what to look for in your coverage.

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

time to bring some fresh minds from outside. promoting from with in has done jack squat so far.

the big question is, wil BB's ego allow that ??

The problem with the secondary is the coaches teach the DB's to play the hands of the receivers, not the football. Belichick admitted this on WEEI last week.

Most coaches teach their DB's to locate the ball when your in the receivers hip pocket.

The patriots get pass interference penalties because qbs slightly underthrow the deep ball, consequently the reciever slows down or stops and go vertical to make a play on the ball. a db playing the hands of the reciever and not the ball runs into the reciever making the play on the ball.

the problem with this team is not lack of talent. Its coaching.

darius butler in his first year turned his head and made plays on the football. a year later he's a bust

devin mccourty in year 1 stuck to recievers hip pocket and located the football in the air. now hes nearing bust territory.

the patriots need to re evaluate their strategy for the secondary. the techniques they teach to the corners leads to the regression of promising talent like mccourty and butler.

if the techniques dont work switch it up

A car crash aptly describes this defense, with apologies to those adversely affected by car crashes.....

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

I don't know, but it's the obvious problem that may likely hold this team back from fulfilling its potential destiny.

The talent is just not there, at least at this point. One of the things that many were excited about was the potential to change things up with some players, but even then, we just don't have the horses to run with many of the better secondaries in the league.

Imagine what some of the bigger, more physical CB's and S's could do on this team?

We have many of the bases covered, but the pass defense seems to always be our downfall.

Something needs to be done immediately, or we'll be basing the rest of the season and playoff potential on blind luck again.

It's frustrating to see so many guys like Welker, Brady, Woodhead, Llyod, Hernandez, Gronkowski, Wilfork, Spikes, Mayo, Jones, etc, etc, etc play their hearts out every single week--only to be held back from achieving their potential by the obvious weakness of the pass defense.

It's almost like the CB/S positions try and tackle/wrap up the WR target, instead of attempting to play the ball or knock it away...and that's IF defensive pass interference is not called first.

Wasn't Dom Capers the secondary coach one year?

We all knew...the whole world knew that the Seahawks would be attempting a longer downfield throw on their last possession.

The whole damn world knew, and yet they could do absolutely nothing.

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

There was little devoted on the secondary in the offseason other than that JAG Gregory.

I am not sure if there was a good talent in this years FA crops but if there was some,Belichick slept on it thinking an improved front 7 would put a bandaid on that area and cover up severe deficiencies......it hasn't yet.

Ok I'll make it real effin simple for you Rob and Bill,

2012:

No Secondary trade, no Superbowl

Ebner is a freaking Rugby player and STer and Wilson is a rookie hoping to stop a very fast WR on a deep pass to save the game.

To put your game at risk by having too very raw and unproven rookies against a very solid WR and no pressure on the QB to boot is very embarrassing.

There is no veteran depth in the secondary, there is no leadership there at all and that is the Achilles heel of the 2012 Patriots...Once again.

Someday these young players may develop into good players, but how long will Brady still be here by the time/if it happens?

Re: Root of the secondary's problems: Evaluation of talent or coaching?

Much has changed since back in the day where we actually didnt play vanilla defense and schemed instead. We had the likes of Troy Brown trying to play CB, Ja'rod Cherry, Randall Gay's, Otis Smith's, Tyrone Poole! I mean you could have put anybody in our secondary and they were successful because of smart scheming.

It has to be a system drafting / player selection failure, as almost never once do you ever hear the name of a member of the Patriot's secondary once they are released/waived and emerge elsewhere in the league.
