Cutdown Day: PATS DISCUSSION thread

They are not winning a Super Bowl with Hoyer or Mallett. So whatever.

If the Pollard hit the fan, I'd rather see a season of Mallet thrown to the fire than a season of Hoyer mediocrity.

But as for the Mallet not outplaying Hoyer.....is this declaration based on a couple of pre-season games behind a backup OL, with WR who have (or will be) cut? Maybe the coaches see more from Mallett in practice? Maybe, Mallet with the starting OL and all of the offenses weapons would look better than he did in the preseason games?

I gave you a like specifically for the analogy for "crap" with Pollard....very well played sir, very well played.

4 WR on the Roster

Welker
Lloyd
Edleman
Slater

wow

looks like Shiancoe made it. Salary guaranteed. Dislike.

The roster is the evidence....BB doesn't throw away seasons by leaving a critical position uncovered.

The roster is evidence that he currently didn't want Hoyer at the given price, and that he was willing to put Mallett at the QB2 slot, at least for the moment, as a consequence of releasing Hoyer.

None of that says he has a different take on Mallett than I do. I've said that Mallett's shown definite improvement, but still had major problems with decision making, needs to improve his accuracy and has a windup that's too slow for the system. I doubt his take on Mallett is much different than that. On the other hand, if it is and BB is more right than I am, I'll take my record on BB QB choices post-Brady and be happy with it. I was right on Klingsbury, Davey, Bishop, Gutierrez, Cassel and O'Connell. I'm due to be wrong on a Patriots QB.

The salary guarantee is the most overrated concept on this site. You are going to guarantee 53 salaries no matter what.
The idea that you would have one player on the 53 week 1 to avoid guaranteeing another's is ridiculous because the result would be to guarantee the guy you plan to cut after week 1 so you don't have to guarantee the guy who will replace him. The net gain isn't worth the trouble.

OK, raise your hand if you had Rivera and White as the final 2 LBs! Holy smokes.

Anyway...a big congratulations to the THREE undrafted rookies who seem to have earned themselves jobs: Forston, Bolden and Francis.

Mallett: 1st training camp. Pre-season games with no 1st team weapons. Pre-season games with vanilla play calling. It is safe to assume that the coaches have seen enough in practices to deem him no worse than Hoyer.

The pre-season matters for evaluation by the coaches. The pre-season games, not so much, at least by the fans.

How good or not Mallett has looked is impossible for us to judge by a couple of pre-season games. Hell, if we are going to do that, then I worry about Brady and the entire offense too!

Bottom line: Mallett may be the drizzling ****s. But to say he has regressed or not progressed because of what we have seen in a couple of exhibition games with the conditions I outlined above? Kneejerk.

I think you hit the nail on the head here....the coaching staff has evaluated BOTH backup QB's for awhile now and have seen BOTH in practice with the first offense and has seen what they can do. Mallett had a vanilla gameplan the last few outings and played with the second and 3rd stringers. They took the handcuffs off Hoyer a bit more (although he played mostly with Jags too) but he didn't exactly shine or make a BIG differentiation as far as I could tell. I think again, that BB has seen much more of BOTH of these QB's and was comfortable at this point in letting Hoyer hopefully catch on in a tight backup race....or make a move for a starting role somewhere.....

Andy, doesn't the guarantee only apply to vested vets?

so annoyed about Demps...

Maybe the Pats are planning to use the return from IR rule for Demps. He had an EXTREMELY short training camp.

Now he gets a chance to get completely healthy, get his weight back up, and be ready to help sooner rather than later.

The fact that the pats did this to Demps, rather than Schiancoe, suggests to me that the Pats are taking advantage of this new rule change which wasn't available to them when Demps first signed.

Why is salary guaranteed a big deal shianco ain't making that much. Only one who really needs to worry about it is Bob Kraft unless the pats are closer to the cap than I thought.

BB seems to disagree with your profound evaluation.

Agreed. I think this is a bit immature to not give BB the respect he deserves in making this decision. OBVIOUSLY BB has seen more of these QB's than we all have.......and HE knows that Mallett would be adequate in coming in if needed and leading the STARTERS down the field. In BB we trust

Regardless of what happens in the next few days or weeks, congrats to those who called a 4 TE roster. Today's the official day, and you got it right.
