I got it!!!..instead of using BB's to fight this raging "BB can't draft!!!" 11 Years War...let's break out the actual LEAD and start shooting from the hip...BB COULD HAVE DRAFTED PATRICK WILLIS!!!! HE BLEW IT!!! I KNEW IT...I...ALL KNOWING KNOWER OF THINGSMAN!!...there ya go...enough mud to sling up an entire village of adobe huts down in Tierra Del Insano...

All I can say is WOW!!!

RUN FOR THE HILLIS..ER...HILLS..IT'S...THE MANXMAN

It would be nice to have Marvin Jones instead of Ebert, but hey-ho. Interestingly, it was the pick we traded for Ochostinko that the Bengals used for Jones.
Actually the New England Patriots could have obtained both wide receivers, Marvin Jones and Jeremy Ebert. I was completely against the Ochostinko and Haynesworth trades at the time, since both were "head cases" at the time and have been since.

we should have taken marino!!

Well it pretty much means we are back to square one, WR wise next year. That's alright, it gives those of us who enjoy the draft another nuance to focus on.

Along with OG, OT, DT, CB especially considering all the impending unrestricted free agents on the New England Patriots roster:

Brian Waters
Donald Thomas
Sebastien Vollmer
Wes Welker
Deion Branch
Julian Edelman
Danny Woodhead
Ron Brace
Myron Pryor
Trevor Scott
Bobby Carpenter
Niko Koutouvides
Kyle Arrington
Marquice Cole
Patrick Chung

And a coverage LB. I'd actually drop DT down a bit - Love looks like a keeper, Brace who hopefully feels he owes a bit of loyalty to the Pats has looked improved in pre-season. A situational interior rusher is all that's really needed and those can be found later.

But it's shaping up to be an interesting off-season (one, you know, we get through the regular season first).

This one is a shock to me. I figured he'd be there to split reps with Branch and as insurance in the event of injury. If Lloyd goes down (God forbid), we essentially have the same issue on offense that we did last year and Brady is lofting bombs that could easily go for picks into tight coverage just to loosen up the opposing defense in the middle of the field.

Deion Branch hasn't been the picture of perfect health either.

I never said he was and it's all the more reason why I think a lot of us are shocked that Gaffney was cut.

HUGE Mistake, Mad Bill.

Not sure if this has been talked about but you have to think about the gameday active roster when building a 53 man roster IMO. If the coaches saw that Branch had beat out Gaffney for the #3 spot, Gaffney is a #4 WR that doesn't have special teams value. With Slater and Edelman locks to play each week, that's 5 WRs right there. There's no way we can activate 6 WRs, considering the multiple TE looks we want to use each week. Do you keep Gaffney to be an inactive every week, or do you try to get a young player you can develop on the roster?

Yep. It's about gameday roster needs.

Two things:

1......

2. ......

Marvin Jones, WR from Cal was one of my binkies. A quality no2 type receiver. He was picked 166th overall. CBSsports call him a breakout star of pre-season:

Bengals' Marvin Jones becoming breakout star of preseason - CBSSports

.....

Let me help you out with a little Merriam-Webster:

Definition of OXYMORON

: a combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness);

a 'breakout star' in the preseason is a joke. As others have said before michael bishop was a preseason star.

and from your OWN ARTICLE post:
He's competing with third-round pick Mohamed Sanu for the final active receiver spot

he is competing for the final spot on the bungles. Lets give him a yellow jacket already.

ok, enough sarcasm. maybe the kid will be good - and it is frustrating that they cut the FAs they went after; but that is why they went for a mix of FAs and draft guys and let it fall out in camp. (the strong [best] survive).

Also; I seem to recall a strong contingent of folks complaining along these same lines that 'Pats cant evaluate wrs well' when talking about drafting wrs. so if they had kept the pick - would they have even gone for your binkie.

I was shocked as well. I am hoping they dropped him to get Kerry Taylor as a warm body for the game on WED then resign Gaffney on Friday when they drop Kerry Taylor. That's the only thing that makes sense.

Shhhh... there's no sense in applying logic in this thread. Just accept the Pats are now screwed.

This is what the knee jerk reaction thread was supposed to be.

Post of the off season... Lots of folks can see it in others, never in the mirror. :rocker:

Actually that makes no sense. While they may sign him back as the final roster takes shape over the next few weeks of back of the roster churning, they won't likely sign him back before week 2 so his salary isn't guaranteed and/or until he's healthy and/or until a need arises or a roster spot opens that they really don't need to fill with a different skill set due to injury or more pressing depth concerns.

It's events like this that make me realize I have only the foggiest notion of what's actually going on in training camp and what BB is thinking. There is always the possibility--slim, I admit--that BB knows more than we do.

Some of you apparently still don't get it. Not just any WR can be a real threat in this system, no matter how tall or how fast. Have to fully grasp it to be of any real use.

Nordberg did make a good point, though. Gaffney is still fast and knows the system. He's played in it for years. That's why the release, given last year's main issue with the offense, is a head scratcher. What does happen if Lloyd goes down? I don't see another outside threat on this team right now that can step in and do what Gaffney would have offered. Branch is able to get open via mostly the intangibles that he brings on top of sharp route running, but he's not a threat to take the top off the defense. Neither is Edelman. We have no idea what we're getting in Ebert yet. Hopefully he is just released for the interim and brought back, because this offense is one injury away from losing the only deep threat that truly understands the playbook. Then we're looking at crowded boxes and flooded fields all over again. Not only will that hurt the short passing game, it'll also hurt the running game.

As far as I'm concerned, the Pats are 50% better off now than last year. Last year, the Pats had 2 starting caliber WRs on the roster....now they have 3. And hopefully the same will be said about our TEs....assuming either/both Fells and Shiancoe make the team.

And don't forget Demps.....put him out wide, send him in motion, and watch the confusion as he crosses behind the LBs

I understand him and Stallworth have declined but Branch is just as bad if not worse, it must be favoritism. I assume we will need to rely on an improved run game and defense because we still have a weak WR unit.
