The NFL has to pretend like they are doing everything in its power to protect players from injury since they're pissed at the former players who are bringing suit against the league.

This is only the tip of the iceberg.

Fixed it for you

Get ready for more petty changes to "prevent injuries. "

Love changes 1 and 3. Not so sure about the point of the second. Wearing pads aren't going to stop deep thigh bruises and knee injuries. Sounds like more of a liability thing than a safety thing to me.

They were discussing this on NFL radio and they thought it was a good idea for a few reasons:
1) It will help lessen the number of concussions that occur when someones knee hits the other guys head
2) It will lessen thigh bruise injuries (see Dez Bryant last year) which can cause calcification later on in life
3) Adding more pads will actually slow players down. Slower players cause less concussions

The impact will be minimal, but with the offseason the NFL has had they had to do something.

Why have people reacted negatively to thigh and knee pads? In England we wear them as mandatory. I was surprised they were only optional in the pro game as it was! I always wore a Rawlings girdle which made meneuverabilty a little bit better and then used the smaller knee pads they designed for a more comfortable fit.

Like all three of the changes and especially like the making of knee and thigh pads compulsory.

I heard that. The same guy also recommended that field turf be removed and players not allowed to wear cleats in order to slow everyone down. :ugh:

maybe we'll go to a foam-covered field, like a big wrestling mat, and everybody wears slipper socks.

or a big 120 yard long bouncy house

The rules changes & "points of emphasis" seem to me less about preventing injury than
it does about mitigating lawsuits & increasing offense; after all, chicks (& advertizing
execs) dig the long ball.

Cam Neely (& Andy Brickley, IIRC) can testify to the bolded #2.

All 32 teams with natural grass fields? Sounds good to me.

I think the significant one here is moving the trading deadline back two more weeks until week 8. At midseason, teams are better able to evaluate needs for the second half of the season. Also at this point the injury situation will be pretty clear and they can make a move to shore up holes.

The limit 1 IR returnee is nice but shouldn't make a significant impact.

And again the elephant in the room is ignored. The ability of the refs to influence the outcome of the game using the pass inteference call.

Similar to a free kick in soccer. It compromises the integrity of the game.

Good point Cap'n. I think that the league is afraid to let the elephant's nose under the tent by making any changes like making it a 15yd penalty. It's SO subjective and so subject to verbose yet unspecific criteria excepting in blatantly obvious instances. Sorta like the joke that is "offensive holding" that also can destroy a series and blow a game.

I don't consider PI any sort of elephant in the room. Then again, I despise the college PI penalty, so that may be the reason.

I can see the story line now when an 0-8 team with no hope trades a top player to The 8-0 pats for next to nothing and other fans are all in an uproar about it
