If you were the GM/owner of the Chargers, would you give him a second chance?

I'm in the DC area, and they had him in town coaching the 'Skins a couple of years. As I recall, took them to the playoffs once, maybe not even that. But basically, he was increasing their win totals.

Washington's answer? Fire shotty. He can't win the big games.

Now Washington is watching at home again. Sure they went last year, but with Shotty and some stability, Snyder would basically have had a Chargers-like team by now.

Yanno what? Worry about not winning the big ones when you're consistently playing in the big ones. Worry about getting there and staying there first.

Shottenheimer racks up regular season wins, and eventually will probably get that big game monkey off his back. Don't pull the plug on him yet.

I voted yes, but I'd have to hedge my answer with first being able to find a more qualified guy. Has to be somebody out there, though. Look at what Mangini did with the Jets. Also, your wording really pushes people into a yes answer with the Belichik qualifier.

I don't give Marty the credit for such a great season. Look at the groceries AJ Smith got for him and they're eating TV dinners after their 1st playoff game. I say can 'em.

If it were my call he'd be gone. It is not just a coincidence that all the inexplicable things happen to him in the playoffs. It doesn't matter where he goes, or how much time passes, it's the same result. This year might have even been the worst of all his choke jobs because this is the most talented team he has ever had.

I just don't know who you're going to get that's any better. They seemed a step away this year and you don't want to be taking backwards steps right now.

That said, I think the telecast made him look pretty bad on Sunday. He had some weird brown spittle thing on his face for much of the 4th quarter, when things started going bad. The he-doesn't-wear-a-headset comes across as quirky and old-school when you're winning, but looks a bit like you're stuck in a time warp when you lose a big game. And of all the crazy decisions, the challenge on the interception/fumble was the one that would make me most concerned if I were a Chargers fan. The bottom line is that wishing something wasn't true to be true is not a reason to challenge.

One of the other things about the challenge to note is that it was his last. As I learned here in this very forum last week, a coach only gets a third challenge if his first two were successful, so Marty was not just using up a time out but also using up his right to challenge any additional big plays that occurred before the 2 minute warning.

The title is "would you fire Marty," so I said yes, not knowing the poll question actually was "would you give Marty another chance?"

I think the 14-2 season just makes the loss that much worse.

Exactly. They were dam god. Which is why getting bounced in their first game in execusable (in my eyes as an owner.)

When a team is that talented, and they lose, chances are the coach did a lot to **** it up.

So they couldn't get over the hump. Neither do 31 other teams. They also lost to a team who's won 3 out of the last 5 SB's. It's nothing to be ashamed of or to lose your job over.

They probably shouldn't fire him,but I would. UNLESS he promised to somehow get that team under control. Steroids,arrests,grandstanding,trash-talking,the "pep rally" where the team was screaming Brady S*cks,Bust him in the mouth,etcetc. And his lack of control over that team is one reson they lost the game,and they totally lost whatever cool they had at the end.
And the BS continues on,as we speak. That's a coach who has NO control,no discipline,and not even control over his own QB.
Also,from what I've heard,San Diego is a city in Mourning. Serious mourning. They had a parade planned,they were talking SB,they shut out Pats fans hoping to rally up and expand "Charger Nation". If he shows up on that field next year heads will roll. Those fans will never trust a 14-2 record again if it's under Marty Schottenheimer and I don't care who his players are. He proved that Sunday. The San Diego Chargers are locked and loaded. That team should not have lost,and probably wouldn't have had they played another team besides the Pats. Another thing he's guilty of-underestimating his opponent.

If it were any other coach I would agree. But Marty Schottenheimer has been doing this FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS. This is what he doesn. It's not a coincidence. He can't get it done.

Yeah the poll question is a little messed up compared to the thread title. I think original poster should change thread title to match the question. I almost picked opposite of what I wanted to vote at first. Had to reread that question.

It also sounds deceptive when you say "marty ball will never die" sounds like a poll answer that would support Marty rather than want to fire him.

Anyways answering the question to this thread. Let me put it to you another way. If BB retired tomorrow and Marty took over. Then Marty led the Pats to a 14-2 record just to lose in the playoffs. Would we can him?

Let's see, were we afraid to can Pete Carroll? No. Would we be afraid to can Marty? No. In New England the standard is the Superbowl now. Marty would be gone in a blink and Kraft would be pleading for BB to come out of retirement.

So should the Chargers fire Marty? Yes. If their aim is to win the Superbowl.
