Wouldn't mind Janoris Jenkins in 2nd round. BB can still make trades if need be so I'm good where we stand. Kraft/BB not sleepin on this it's been a while since we got a new T-shirt. GO FOR IT!

The Cowboys are reportedly shopping CB Mike Jenkins. I think we could and should make an offer for him and try and take Janoris or another DL or a OL.

Mike Jenkins
Chandler Jones
Dont'a Hightower
Janoris Jenkins/Jared Crick/Jeff Allen

I couldn't care less about the number of picks at this point.

Defense should still be the focus but with Light gone, Seabass recovering and Waters questionable, might need to think about adding some quality depth/potential starter on the line.

The pas probably don't have the roster spots for a lot of picks. Why draft players just to cut them?

One of the things about all the picks the Pats have used the past few years means that there are just not many spots available for a lot of lower round picks. If the Pats can get 3-4 solid players out of their four picks this year, this is better than getting a lot lower round picks who will stick around as development player.

I don't think the Patriots are in bad shape at all on defense. I am of the opinion that the problem last year was giving too much time in the pocket too often to opposing QBs and I don't think that will be problem this season.

I think they are fine at corner, safety slightly concerns me but there is depth and potential if certain guys can stay injury free.

Personally I'd like to see one of those two picks traded into next year. There are a lot of contracts up at the end of the 2012 season and an extra early pick might be very welcome then. I don't mind what they do with the other one.

Works for me! MJ flourish in BB's system.
There's gonna be many different senarios still left. There's no lock on WRs others cuts etc. I really see team Kraft/BB takin a firm stand makin a statement on D.

Nope. Doesn't bother me. This draft is Quality over Quantity. As long as Jones and Hightower live up to their billing, I'm not worried. We might trade back a bit on day 2 to pick up more picks either for this year or next but it's not all that 'Urgent'. Pun intended! Day 1 of this year's draft is about is good as can be expected.

What do you think?

Have the Patriots backed themselves into a competitive disadvantage through the current complete lack of 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks?

Do they need to trade back-up players and future picks to target some of the players on their wishlist? Should they convert the two Seconds into a number of 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks?

Does their recent hit rate in the second round concern you if they end here?

With that said/typed, I feel that our 2 selections are "Quality" and will live up to expectations. I'm not a Homer just a lookin at a solid void filled with all kind'sa potential.

No, Not having a defense bothers me.

No, now I'll read the thread.

I'm not real happy with what we got for a couple of them, but that's water under the bridge.

It doesn't bother me at all. Their 3rd round success rate has been atrocious. They've had some misses in the 2nd round but they've also gotten Gronk, Spikes, Chung, Vollmer so I have no worries.

Yeah, i'd be pretty unconcerned if we duplicated recent history.

Obsessing over what happened at what round number is pretty much superstition anyway IMO. Different years, different needs, different draft strategies. Direct comparisons between different drafts is pointless, unless you have a team that drafts the same way regardless if they have a vet team, or a young team, lots of holes, few etc., which, thank gawd, we don't have.

Somewhere deep down inside I feel a little nervous twitch at the concept of no picks after tonight. But I think that's a classic conditioned response after the past several years of Pats fandom. And when I catch my breath and think for, oh, a second, yeah, I'm fine with how this is going down.

Kind of a false dichotomy in this poll. Mid-round picks are by no means worthless, but for the needs that this particular team has, I don't mind that they've chosen instead to target a couple of players that they must feel are premium talents.

If Chandler Jones turns into Tamba Hali 2.0 for us, then I doubt anyone will even remember that we didn't have a pick after the second round of this draft.

I just wanted to revisit this based upon the current roster:

QB - Brady/Hoyer/Mallett
HB - Ridley/Vereen/Woodhead
FB - Fiammetta/Kattani
TE - Gronkowski/Hernandez/Fells
WR - Welker/Lloyd/Branch/Stallworth/Underwood/Edelman/Gonzalez/Johnson/Davis
OL - Solder/Vollmer/Cannon/Mankins/Koppen/Connolly/Wendell/Thomas/McDonald/Kopa/Hix/Gallery

I don't see much room on the offense for low round players. I certainly don't think it's as crowded on the defensive side of the ball but, even there, there were a lot of FA signings (and the 2 picks from last night) to bolster that group, and they've got a pretty full roster already (although the move to 90 players does mean there are more spaces to fill).

As a result, even if I were generally inclined to prefer having the lower round picks over the higher picks, I'd consider this year an exception. Instead of looking to trade down, I'd hope the Patriots were looking at a few top UDFAs to add to the mix.

What stood out to me is the first group of players..... All 3rd round or later (udfa on Hoyers part,... But he's not exactly who I am highlighting here ).

So just based on that... Even though most people here aren't bothered by not having these 3-7 picks... I personally worry that you can miss out on players of this caliber.

As a matter of fact... The majority of the players you listed are probably 3-7th round picks originally.
With most good teams as matter of fact. Still doesn't mean you can't improve with later picks, if you're a good team. Does anybody not think the Saints aren't a better team with guys like Colston (7th) and Jimmy Graham (3rd) in their passing attack?

*note... I didn't choose to quote Deus' post because I disagree with it in any way. I just felt that highlighting the first group he listed, which in itself proves the value of later picks, would get my point across

Does not bother me at all. Low round picks are a good way to improve a bad team. Improving a good team takes top flight talent.

Didn't we have something like 16 players make this team from the last two years drafts... there are not a lot of job openings.

Not really about job openings, but about upgrades. who's job is safe in the nfl or anywhere really?

It's about lottery tickets with these picks
And as the lottery commission says " you gotta be in it, to win it"

Now we don't have any LOW round picks!!! Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad!!!!

We signed a ton of FA to cover this issue... the Pats traded up for quality, deal with it.

Also, take heart that we never traded a future pick... we still have a full set of picks in 2013... so relax!

Are you sure about that? I thought they traded a 2013 5th for Albert and a 2013 6th for Ocho Cinco. ....... That would leave them with a 1,2,3,4,7 next year
