Due to overwhelming popular demand (ok, maybe just one PM), I'm proud to bring you the annual PatsFans draft contest! Come one, come all, to gaze into the silver-blue flame and divine the deepest workings of Bill Belichick's mind!

The rules are simple: for each pick the Patriots have in the upcoming draft, name one player you think they'll pick. You don't have to match the player to the slot. You can pick nothing but round-2 DB prospects if you like. The scoring is a straightforward 1 point for every name on your list who ends the weekend as a drafted Patriot.

This contest is never easy. Save for 2010, henceforth to be known as "The year they actually gave us what we wanted, except of course an outside pass rusher, duh," it has proved a yearly exercise in humility. And this year is even harder. 'Cause here's the sad little secret about 2010...the Patriots had 12 picks that year. TWELVE. That's a lot of darts to throw. This year, you only get to list SIX names.

So, name your six and claim your glory!

p.s. to make sure you get proper credit for your oracular powers, please take care with your spelling and try to enter only once. thanks.

I think you should go with ten players to give people a shot and we know they'll make more than 6 picks. I started this in another thread a few weeks back but it didn't take off and I've been away on vacation. Since it's just starting why not 10?

And my "unofficial, what BB would want to do if he could" entry:

Coby Fleener
Dwayne Allen
Michael Egnew
Orson Charles
Brian Linthicum
Ladarius Green

Because patchick is an arbitrary and capricious draft contest runner. ;)

Jointly won this last year. much less confident this - I'm all over the place on where we're going to go. But here goes:

All Saban/ all the time:

Dont'a Hightower
Dre Kirkpatrick
Courtney Upshaw
Josh Chapman
De'quan Menzie

I don't believe that we'll trade up For Richardson, or Barron, so that leaves me w/ one more:

Shea McClellin

She's a gracious moderator but sticking to six picks doesn't fit arbitrary or capricious. :p

If I can only have 6

Shea McClellin OLB Boise St
Chase Minnifield CB Virginia
Marvin Jones WR Cal
Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnati
Kheeston Randall DT Texas
Markelle Martin S Oklahoma ST

My additional 4 should my request be granted. (Watch these all hit and none of the above come in.)

Dont'a Hightower LB Alabama
Junior Hemingway WR Michigan
Vick Ballard RB Miss St
Chris Rainey KR/PR/RB Florida

I just posted this in another thread. I think we will end up with more than 6 plus a couple of extras in next years draft. I don't know how he does it. If no trades:

1a. Shea McClellin, OLB, Boise State. I don't think he gets by the Packers, so if the Patriots want him, They will have to get him here.

1b. Kendall Reyes, DE, Connecticut. Versatile player, can play anywhere on the DL.

2a. Mike Adams, T, Ohio State. He will drop because of a positive drug test. BB has shown that he is willing to take a chance on guys who have made mistakes.

2b. Brandon Taylor, S, LSU. Hard hitting safety who is smart and a team leader in college. It would cost too much to trade up for Barron and I don't think Harrison Smith gets by the Jets.

3. Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State. This will be Belichicks WTF move. After signing a lot of WRs in free agency, no one thinks BB will draft a WR. This would be a great pick. The guy is 6'4". We have enough smurfs. we need a tall receiver.

4.Leonard Johnson, CB, Iowa State. Can help immediately as a kick retuurner

I'm just sticking with the traditional rules, which have always been based on the number of picks the Pats had heading into draft weekend. Honestly, we've been spoiled as Patriots draftniks in the past -- even including comp picks, half the league has 7 or fewer this year.

Funny how nobody complained about having TOO many chances in 2010. ;)

I'll give back a few of my misses for extra picks this year. :D

I'm carpet bombing the 2nd round...hoping to hit two

Nick Perry............ DE... USC
Kendall Reyes.......DT... U Conn
Bruce Irvin............DE...WV
Brandon Taylor......SS...LSU
Mike Adams..........OT...Ohio St
Rueben Randle......WR...LSU

This way you ( and me) can only be wrong 6 times instead of 10, so look at the bright side.

After a brilliant 2010 I made up for it by whiffing badly last year. Right now my brain is so clouded that 500 players now have the last name of Hightower. I'll be back later when the fog goes away.

Nick Perry: probably not gonna happen, but he should be there right around our slots. The guy really makes too much sense to add. I really think he would be very very good in our defense

Michael Brockers: it's weird, I'm starting to get the same feeling with him that I did with Big Vince right before that draft

Kendall Reyes: If we don't get Brockers; Reyes is a very good 5 tech de. He reminds me a lot of Muhammad Wilkerson, and I was CERTAIN we would pick him last year..so of course...

Harrison Smith: I really hope we don't take him. I wouldn't feel terrible if it was in a trade back in the 2nd round, but he'd probably need to be grabbed in the first, and I do NOT give him a first round grade. He's a good player, and would upgrade a huge weakness, but this is one of those where BB always says don't draft for need just because it's a need, because then you'll be drafting for that same need the very next year. I just don't think he's anywhere close to a special player.

Joe Adams: I love this guy, he's Randall Cobb 2.0. I really think we could add one wr day two looking forward at next year. It will give us the leverage with Welker.

Bruce Irvin: reminds me a lot of Rosie Colvin. Wouldn't be a bad speed rusher. Yes we really need two young rushers, because Ninko is Averago.
