Congratulations coach cal!!!

I'm more excited about the Wayland Ladies Auxiliary Croquet Team. Do you think they can defend their title? It's a tough schedule this season, especially on the road. But I'm very thankful that coach Bertha Crapapari is back. She's a legend.

Are you saying that Big Bertha is Back? Awesome.

On a somewhat football-related note, WTF is Kraft doing hanging w/ that greasy slimeball Calipari?

I don't know ... Who's leading the Western Division in Roller Derby?

Oh you must be mistaken, Bertha and her girls were stripped of their title last year for using corked croquet balls. I'm sorry to report but they are on probation this year and won't be defending anything

EDIT: It appears that Bertha also may been videotaping her opponents walkthroughs on the croquet course.

Some of these posts make me want to vomit. Coach Cal doesn't pretend that college bball is anything other than a developmental league for a certain portion of kids. He caters to those kids. He develops them in a matter of months and gives them a better chance at success then had they not gone to him.

The NCAA is a quasi-criminal organization. The fact that he is their number 1 target should be evidence enough of his virtue.

EDIT: The people complaining about the "stain" on Umass are full of it. I bet they enjoyed the ride when he was here. The only stain on Umass is the inability to draw coaches with a reputation for developing NBA players, like Calipari.

April 1 was two days ago. Nice try, though. The Crapapari legacy is intact and gearing for another championship run. :singing::singing::singing:

He was an egotistical douchebag that made a mockery of Umass basketball and forfeited the season. I was there, I witnessed the entire mess, up front and personal like.

You don't understand, he's evil. All of those upstanding programs like Kansas, North Carolina and Kentucky (when they were virtual holy, as opposed to evil now, obviously) attract 8-10 of the top 50 recruits in the country because of their fine academic programs and their enthusiastic booster clubs.

These booster clubs are full of fine, upstanding millionaires and billionaires whose only mission is to cheer on the team and make sure they get to the arena. Sometimes they give them rides and forget to ask for the cars back. Sometimes they are concerned with their home situation, sometimes with their family situation. Sometimes their families end up in new homes they don't pay for, the better to foster that spirit of amateur competition.

All those dirty non top fifty recruits are just ghetto, picking up cash from unscrupulous "agents" interested only in latching onto NBA stars, unlike boosters who are interested in players homes and cars and academics. Yes, boosters are very interested in academics, often providing tutoring services out of the goodness of their hearts to top fifty recruits who haven't had the time to study, being that they are top recruits, not ghetto scum.

These tutors, mindful of their time issues, often provide fully written term papers for the various academic subjects, so that these scholar athletes will have a template to follow when they write their own papers. Often students merely turn in these templates, to better gauge what the teachers are looking for. Tutors may even provide test answers, so students can learn to test better if they ever actually have to take a test without the answers provided.

That is why these fine schools have so many outstanding scholar athletes, some of whom even stay through their sophomore years. So please, don't be a cynic, or an excuse maker. Calipari and those ghetto kids are scum. The top recruits with established booster programs shouldn't even be forced to play in the same division as them. Excepting Kentucky, of course, which is now evil.

No one said anything about the kids. Nice try, though.

I think it's hilarious that you're crushing on a guy who has managed to get his most successful season at each of his previous two coaching gigs stricken from the record, as well as gotten the schools penalized whilst he jumps ship.

Quick question: What if the same happens to this Kentucky season? Would your opinion change?

No one from UMass, or Calapari, was accused of giving Camby anything, that was a guy from his neighborhood who was trying to be his agent. The Memphis program seemed to have some culpability in the Rose situation, but if you think these are exceptions rather than the rule, you are either gullible or misinformed.

The probe stems from allegations that Bush’s mother and stepfather were provided a suburban San Diego home in exchange for his signing with a would-be agent as his client. In January, the school punished its men’s basketball program for recruiting violations involving O.J. Mayo, who played there for one season. The women’s tennis team also received sanctions.

Both Bush, who now plays for Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints and Mayo, now with the Memphis Grizzlies, deny any wrongdoing while students at USC. Pete Carroll, the Trojans’ coach at the time of the allegations, is now head coach of the Seattle Seahawks.

How many NCAA titles did Southern California lose? Or any of these other "established" schools?

Wake up and smell the coffee bud. He's at Kentucky now, there's nothing illegal anymore.

I could obviously fill up a page with teams with worse violations who didn't have titles rescinded, but we're sports fans and the hypocrisy of the NCAA when it comes to major programs should be fairly obvious.

I hate what Calipari and other guys like him have done to college sports.

You're fine with it; I'm not.

It's a fundamental difference of opinion.

By guys like him you mean programs much worse that get away with murder? NFL players have graduated four years and were found to be completely illiterate.

I'm just judging the coach at UMass on his merits, he was never even accused of anything in the Camby situation.

If you want to make a comment on the NCAA academic scholar situation, that's fine, but why not learn a bit of what's really going on and gone on for years?

Here's a five page SI article on the Camby scandal. Calipari's name is only mentioned once, with no follow up.

Many unscrupulous agents have preyed on poor kids, probably thousands and that's not an exaggeration. The "booster clubs" keep it all neat and tidy until it's so obvious they get caught and wrist slapped.

And here's the top notch program he inherited.

Elaborating on a story he has told in the past, Pitino told SNY.tv that he wrote a check for $5,000 or $10,000 to help cover Calipari’s expenses when he was hired at UMass in 1988.

“John doesn’t know this but I know it to be the truth,” Pitino told SNY.tv Thursday following his regular interview session with the media.

As has been documented in a 2009 SI story, Pitino was on the search committee for a new UMass basketball coach at the time the school opted to hire Calipari, a 29-year-old Pittsburgh assistant.

According to the SI story, UMass AD Frank McInerney offered Calipari a salary of $63,000 but the school only had $58,000 to pay him.

“I was walking out [of UMass] and the AD said, ‘Look, I don’t have money to pay for a courtesy car or [Calipari's] country club,’” Pitino recounted to SNY.tv. “‘Can you write us a check?’”

“I’ll send it to you,” Pitino recalled telling McInerney.

“No, can you write the check?” he recalled McInerney replying.

Asked how much the check was for, Pitino said, “I’m not sure the amount. It was either $5 or 10 [thousand]. But I’m not sure the amount. I know I wrote the check.”

Pitino wrote the check instead of covering his wife Joanne’s Sak’s Fifth Avenue bill, as was his habit during his tenure as Knicks head coach from 1987-89

When Pitino got home, Joanne told him he had to pay the bill.

“I can’t pay it,” Pitino told her. “I just wrote a check. And she called me every name in the book. So that’s why I know it was true. He never knew it.”

Pitino had to pay his salary out of his own checking account because Mass Aggie didn't even have enough money for that. Boo hoo UMassers, enjoy your current program.

Congrats to Kellogg for a decent year this year anyway, nice to have a former player succeeding as a coach, though, as a triangle resident, i can tell you there's a big difference between East and North Carolina.

RayClay, I think we all know John Cal isn't squeaky clean, and some of his doings are a bit shady. That said, I will defend him on the grounds that Calipari as an individual has never been charged with any wrongdoings, it's just that every program he goes to ends up at has some type of NCAA sanctions. Personally I'm a UCONN fan, so I'm used to hearing all types of **** about Calhoun, at the end of the day however, Calipari is a very good coach, as is Calhoun.

Granted, and i said I believe he or the program had some culpability at Memphis. He did nothing at UMass except hustle his ass off and beat some much more established programs with players he had to find, rather than have handed to him. He also built a program out of nothing, including getting a real stadium. Figured this thread would be closed or moved by now, anyway, but I'm thrilled he won and feel he worked very hard and nothing was given to him.

Of course, if y'all think those big college programs aren't down right crooked because they usually skate (size and influence have their rewards) I can't help you.

Wha? You think he's the only coach that can develop players that quickly? How many examples do you need?

What people complain about is his relationship to WWW who funnels money to kids constantly. Those kids went to Memphis, they went to Kentucky. Kids take money when they play for him, they cheat on SATs (Derrick Rose), they get their high school transcripts doctored (Bledsoe) and people get paid to have this happen.

NCAA quasi-criminal? Huh?

You ever wonder where the term "student-athlete" came from? Do you ever wonder why the NCAA bombards you with that term, spending millions on advertising campaigns playing up the "student" side of that equation, even when we know it is an illusion for many big-time college athletes? Do you wonder why college basketball and football are billion dollar industries but are considered "amateur" athletics?

Here's a hint: Somebody is benefitting from the illusion that these kids are students and not athletes. Here's another hint, it's not the athletes. Whatever scraps the kids get from people like Worldwide Wes PALES in comparison to the haul that the NCAA's member universities take in from not having to pay these kids wages, benefits, workers comp, etc.

I like Cal and am glad he won, NCAA BS sanctions be damned. Stripping a team of a title is just ridiculous...imagine if Goodell tried to do that to us or the Saints.

I look forward to Coach Cal getting paid gobs of money to run my Knicks for about 2 1/2 years and then get fired for not living up to expectations. I imagine after that he will take over a middle of the road college program and get them into the Final Four.

I find it interesting that all the good/great coaches in college and in the NBA, are Italian Americans.
