I know about the mixed feelings towards this guy but should we make a splash to get him? I mean, right now we really can't be too choosey about upgrading this defense. Thoughts?

Samuel, 31, is set to make $8.4 million in base salary next season with a salary cap hit of $9.5 million as part of the contract he signed with the Eagles in 2008.

You're about a week early for an April fool's joke.

Money is an issue, besides we are stacked at cb.

Asante has been on the trading block for about 3 years now. For a couple of reasons...
which remain about the same as the reasons why we let him walk to begin with.

For about half that money he might be worth considering. But he's still a dummy with a bad attitude.

Yeah, I also gave thought to money being an issue as well. I think Samuel upgrades our CBs though honestly.

If the Pats have that much cash to throw at a guy i'd much rather see them throw that money, and draft pick at the Vikes, for Jared Allen.
THAT would go a long ways to improving the defense.

Possibly in terms of ability (given his tenuous status in Philly, I doubt his abilities have improved there), but it is a question of value. He is not a top cover corner in the NFL, but he likely still believes himself to be. Not worth it by a long shot at the price he demands.

And if McCourty returns to 2010 form, then he is better than Samuel. Dowling may be as well, but we need to see more of what he can do.

He can't be any worse than our corners...why not?

We wouldn't pay him 8.4 mill a year when he was in his prime, and he certainly isn't there anymore.
If there was no such thing as a salary cap, he'd be a great addition. Although the problem will come when he is unhappy with his role and bltches.
At that cost, I can't imagine he gets traded, so maybe when he gets cut we can take a look at a cheaper contract.

He upgrades the playmaking ability of our CB's, but not the overall position, ESPECIALLY at the price. Samuel has always been a feast or famine CB. who misses on as many as he makes. He is also one of the worst tacklers among those who play the CB position.

Finally, his forte is covering from the zone defense. He is NOT a good press CB. When the Pats were predominantly a zone team he made more sense. However today's pass offenses, when they struggle at all, tend to have problems with tough man coverage. I think the Pats are trending in that direction more than than the past, So for this reason as well, Samuel is NOT a good option.

So in conclusion - Not a good fit due to his contract. Not a good fit due to a lack of tackling, inconsistency, and press coverage skills. Ahhhh! I think I'd pass

I can give you 8.4 million reasons.
And I wouldn't trade either McCourty or Dowling for him straight up. He is 31 and doesn't tackle.

Dowling is glass so we can throw him in the dumpster for all i care. Of course we wouldn't pay $8.4 for him. He would HAVE to restructure. He probably wouldn't. But who knows

We are talking about the guy who bashed BB when he left correct?
I believe it was something about the whole team needing to question BB.
I don't think Bill forgets or forgives guys who try to turn the locker room on him.

Ty Law made remarks against BB yet all was forgiven as BB tried to re-sign Ty.
Asante's issues are (1) big cap hit contract (2) penchant for not tackling and (3) weak press coverage.

He'd be a great depth addition at vet minimum

Emotionally I never want to see him again as my last memories of his play here are horrific

Luckily for the rest of us Dowling career didn't end when he sustained one injury as a rookie.

We have hardly any decent corners. I mean what your saying is like me saying ''oh look we have 3, 6ft 4 320lb fat guys sat in the front row, lets get them on the roster as NT'/DT's"

We need quality not quantity.

This guy is going to be hurt his entire career. Watch. After his rookie contract he will be gone

I for one love the monicker Glass IR Dowling but I see no substantive evidence that forces that outcome. Looking fwd to a productive season for my man.
