Brandon Lloyd meeting with 49ers: Patriots are gonna blow it

Per rotoworld-

Brandon Lloyd - WR - Rams

Sources close to the 49ers tell CSN New England that free agent Brandon Lloyd's visit with the team was likely a favor for agent Tom Condon.

It's customary behavior this time of year, done to help an agent show the rest of the league that there is a market for his client. So far, though, the 49ers are Lloyd's only known visit. His public campaigning to join the Patriots could be scaring off potential suitors.

So this was only a ploy from condon. Was Bedard right?

It may come down to a game of chicken, contractually speaking.

So you have the Pats who rarely overpay and know that Lloyd has no options and really wants to pay for the Pats vs. Lloyd and Condon who are sitting waiting for the phone to ring because Lloyd killed the market for him. I wonder who is going to blink first.

Unless Condon would rather not have his client sign with another team, he is going to have to cave to the Pats. Now that the free agency flury has subsided and Lloyd's only team visit looks to be a courtesy visit, his market value goes down day by day. I think the Pats will get him on the cheap possibly lower than I even expected. He might get $4-5 million a year when I thought he would get $5-6 million a year.

The decks are stacked against Condon. He isn't repping an elite QB in this situation. He can play hardball in that case, but now the Pats have all the leverage.

The Mangenius was saying pretty much this same thing last night on BSPN. He said that the Pats will wait it out, sooner or later these guys who going into free agency who thought they were going to make 5 million a year, will come to the realization, that they are not going to make that kind of money and will come back to the table.

Lloyd, clearly wants to be here. The SOP for the Pats has generally to give the player/agent the value that THEY'VE set on the player and let them go out and see what the rest of the league thinks If its close to what the Pats think, then he'll be here. If someone blows him out of the water with a deal, then he won't.

The Pats may come up 5% or so in response to a bigger offer, but they aren't going to match something that is out of their "value" assessment. That's generally just how they do business....and business has been good There's no hurry on this.

I know i might take some heat for this, but i don't think lloyd will be the missing piece on offense, call me a liar but if i remember correctly the guy had one big year back in 2010 with the broncos, hes vastly overated in my opinion. I think we can go after someone in the draft that will be more of a valuable option, we dont have a good track record at picking up quality wr's in the draft, but i think this is the year.

He was very good last year too. It just doesn't show on the stat sheet because he had nobodies throwing to him. As long as he has McDaniels in charge of the offense, he'll be fine.

After the whole Ben Watson rookie deal thing, and now this, Tom Condon must twitch uncontrollably every time someone mentions "New England Patriots" to him.

really thought he would have been signed by now...idk about him coming here anymore

True. It's not as if we've ever signed anyone after the first couple days of free agency before.

The Patriots/Lloyd thing is how the team goes about doing business. They are not going to outbid themselves.

Anyone think it is weird someone from the Broncos said that stuff about Lloyd. Maybe that someone has ties to McDaniels and the Patriots wanted that out there.

Plus if Lloyd didn't have Condon as his agent he probably would have been signed by now.

That and I would not be suprised if team are shying away from a player who is 31 years old and has been with 5 teams in 8 years.

The flip side of McDaniel being Lloyd's football savior is that McDaniel knows him well. That cuts both ways - he might not want to deal with him if he doesn't have to.

I still think its Condon trying to get the best for his client in a hot market. If he only gets, say, 3 and 12 with $6m guaranteed, who is going to hire him in light of the contracts Garcon, VJax and other WRs received?

It would be great if we could get him for cheap, but the McDaniels/Lloyd connection is being overstated IMO. The question is whether he's really a big enough upgrade over 85 and Branch to justify a big investment. Forget Josh: chemistry with Brady and football IQ are the overriding considerations, for better or worse.

I think they are looking hard at WRs in the draft. If Lloyd signs elsewhere, let the draft speculation frenzy begin. opcorn:

A rock with stick arms would be a better upgrade over Ocho

I dunno--BB seems to disagree. The only problem with Chad seems to be upstairs at this point. Maybe McDaniels can make it click for him. If he gets his confidence back and they get him the ball more, he's still capable of making big plays.

According to Lombardi 49ers have offered Lloyd a contract.

Sounds more like grasping at straws.

The question is now whether Belichick has any interest in this patsfans binky, and whether that interest equals an offer high than what the 49er's have offered.

I've kind of had a feeling Lloyd wasn't coming here for a while. Everyone just pretty much assumed he was, and it's never a good idea to assume what BB is thinking. Hopefully he steps up with a fair offer.
