2/27/2012 one-round mock by Rob Rang of CBS Sports

2012 NFL Mock Drafts - CBSSports.com NFLDraftScout.com

27. New England Patriots (from New Orleans)

Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State: Cox will appeal to Bill Belichick for various reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the 6-4, 295-pound junior is just scratching the surface of his potential. And make no mistake, the potential is there for Cox to be a star. The Bulldog defensive tackle earned the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week four times this season and is highly regarded by scouts because of his size, strength and ability to play inside or out in multiple fronts. That type of versatility will also certainly intrigue Belichick.

31. New England Patriots

Nick Perry, DE, Southern California: Some teams are hesitant to grade Perry as a first-round prospect due to the fact that he elected to leave USC after just one highly productive season. He led the Pac-12 with 9.5 sacks in a breakout junior campaign. There are scouts who do believe he's just scratching the surface of his potential and others who like him best as a defensive end rather than an outside linebacker in the 3-4. For Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Perry would likely be asked to play both positions.

That's a sweet 1st round. They are my two positions to target. Of course, we'll probably draft cb and wr.

WARNING
Keep your disagreements and responses civil. I have kicked 2 people off this thread and should it continue on other threads some will be going on a posting vacation.

Much obliged, Bro.

...or a RB & TE.

Cox & Perry would make a very sweet 1st round.
DE/DT & OLB/DE (and FS) are absolutely the 2 positions that must be targeted, maybe more than once.

Harrison Smith at 48 and McClellin at 63 and I might go out and do some grassies!!

Post Combine Mock Draft

27. Kendall Reyes DT UConn - underrated 3-4 DE with all the physical attributes including strength (34 reps) and long arms.

31. TRADE down to #39 for 2013 #2 pick

39. Harrison Smith SS Notre Dame - This could be Mark Barron depending on how far he falls (double sports hernia). Smith is like a LB playing Safety. His ability to play in the box and cover TE's and RB's is key.

48. Shea McClellin LB Boise St. - incredibly athletic DE that showed at the combine that he has what it takes to make the transition to OLB in 3-4. He has the measurable that BB required for the position.

63. Josh Robinson CB Central Florida - Compare his measurable against Devin McCourty. Robinson's are better. He is an inch shorter but slightly heavier. Check the tape of him against AJ Green of Georgia ... held him to 77 yards and no TDs. Nobody threw against him last year. 38 starts in his 3 years at UCF.

94. TRADED for #116 & 158 (CIN)

116. Marvin Jones WR CAL - Gifted and productive starting 38 games and having at least one catch in 38 straight games. Big receiver at 6'2" but still ran 4.46.

126. Jake Bequette OLB Arkansas - Another DE/OLB conversion project that has the sack moves to be a force on 3rd downs.

158. TRADE 176 & 189 (PHI)

176. Devon Wylie WR Fresno St. - One of the fastest and quickest WR's in the draft. He is also an excellent PR. He is a Welker clone. Despite his short stature, I think he is put together enough to handle the pounding in the slot.

189. Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnatti - Big East Defensive Player of the Year. Has good motor and will put pressure on the QB from DT position. Reminds me of former Bearcat Mike Wright.

This is a fantasy draft, gets almost every one of my blinkies. I would love for the Pats to get Wolfe at 189 as I believe he can be an impact player on the line. If only they could get Stephen Hill as an UDFA.

Hey, if say for some reason we wanted to trade both of our 1st rounders to trade up how far could we trade up??

Around 10 or 11

If we decided to do this, Melvin Ingram, or Dontari Poe (I hear his stock is rising high enough to potentially be a top 15 pick) would both be interesting.

Correct, Sir!!

Book Value on #27 + #31 is 600 + 680 = 1280 Points:

One of Many Sites That Have the famous Draft Value Chart

And 1280 Points falls right in between the Book Values of 10 and 11.

Of course Market Value ~ what you can actually get for those Picks ~ is different, each and every year.

~ If somebody hates their own Pick at #6, say, and is desperate to Trade Back, but we're the only Bidders...we might get an huge Premium for those Picks...or get #6 at an huge Discount, if you will.

~ Likewise, if the owners of Picks #10 through #15 are all in love with their Picks, and refuse to trade them, after which there is a Bidding War for #16, we might be asked to cough up #27 and #31 at a sharp Discount...or, once again but in reverse, pay an huge Premium for #16.

It's a process that never stops fascinating me.

It Is What It Is » Mock Draft, Take 2: Patriots get help at safety

27. New England (from New Orleans), Mark Barron, S, Alabama

This would be quite the value pick for the Patriots, who have a need at safety and likely would be interested in adding a star defender who played for Saban. The Patriots have other needs as well, as they could use help at receiver, on the interior offensive line and on the defensive line. Cox falling to No. 25 is crazy enough, but if he fell to this spot the Pats would have to strongly consider it.

31. New England (13-3), Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Jeffery looked good at the combine, and that’s without him even running. By merely not looking overweight, Jeffery passed a big test, but he won’t have solidified his status as the next best receiver prospect behind Blackmon and Wright until he shows his speed. Jeffery’s hands are outstanding, and he could give the Pats the big wide receiver they’ve lacked.

Courtney Upshaw, Vinny Curry and Harrison Smith are the three players has going between the two Pats draft picks.

I'd rather Andre Branch or Kendall Reyes instead of Jeffery.

Regarding Barron at 27: If on their pro day & workouts, Barron proves a better Free Safety
than Upshaw proves a NEP 3-4 OLB, then my choice would be Barron; if OTOH the reverse is true,
then my choice would be Upshaw.

If your going by film you can say those 2 would be very good Patriots. I'm interested to see Upshaw's work out and am not as turned off as some because I've seen a large majority of the Alabama games and he looks like a 1st round pick.

Barron has great film too but I don't think he is going to be ready for his pro day Wednesday which is a let down. Hopefully late March early April he can hold some workouts for some interested clubs and set things straight.. I wouldn't draft him without seeing him work out though. Safety isn't a position like LB where you can have good tape, run a 5.00 40 and 7.70 3cone and still be a play maker on the field in the NFL. We don't need Ahmad Black or Ernest Shazor here in New England.

Some new mocks out at cbs. Pat Kirwan has us taking Nick Perry at 27 and trading 31 to Pittsburgh for signing Mike Wallace.

Brugler and Rang have theirs out too. Rang has us taking Reuben Randle - wr and Nick Perry - olb. Don't like Randle there. Would rather have P.Konz or K. Reyes. Brugler has us taking K. Reyes - de and Mark Barron - s. I like that better. Brugler has Still going 28. I'd take him over Reyes.

For me, Barron/Kirkpatrick and Still/Reyes are the best possible outcomes for the first round.

Forget the talk of drafting a RB, I want to sign Herschel Walker (yes, that one. the 1982 Heisman winner). He still reportedly runs a 4.35 40 Yard Dash.

When God designed a RB, He made Herschel Walker.

At 5:30 a.m., Walker wakes up to do 750 to 1,500 push-ups and about 2,000 sit-ups.
guy is a beast, if Faulk retires and we don't resign BJGE than web would need a veteran RB to go with Vereen and Ridley, Walker would be a great addition to the team.

I don't know if anyone has seen the new WalterFootball mock yet, but I think a lot of people will be excited by it. I believe everyone but the 4th round pick is someones binky on this board.

27. Michael Brockers- DE/DT- LSU
31. Andre Branch- DE/OLB- Clemson
48. Harrison Smith- S- Notre Dame
63. Marvin Jones- WR- Cal
94. Casey Hayward- Vanderbilt
126. Donte Piage-Moss- DE/OLB- UNC (Jarius Wright went the next pick)

While I have to say, I wouldn't quite class any of these players as Binky's of mine, I don't think we could have a better draft than this (apart from DPM at 126). My only problem is I think all of the first 5 guys are better players than the position they are selected, so I don't think they will be there. If they are though, I think this could arguably go down as BB best draft ever.

And for manxman, Jamel Fleming goes 102, so you could easily put him instead of Hayward, although I really like both.

Similiar, but not identical mock from Walter this week. They have us picking.

1a Michael Brockers - DE - LSU
1b Mark Barron - S - Alabama

Do I hear an amen from the congregation after that first round

2a Vinny Curry - OLB/DE - Marshall
2b Marvin Jones - WR California
3 Casey Hayward - CB - Vanderbilt

3 pretty good football players there and solid guys from good school.

4 Donte Paige-Moss - de - UNC - No way in hell.

But, these guys are still on board; Jarius Wright - wr, J. Crick - de - Nebraska, Jake Bequette - de - Arkansas, TY Hilton - WR, M. McNutt - WR, B. Lindsay olb. Rut roh!! No Derek Wolfe sighting in their first 5 rounds. Kendell Reyes went 39 to Rams after they acquired the pick in a trade down.

He's a pro MMA fighter now, so I'm sure he is still in great shape.

I'd love that draft 1st round and draft in general.

Having Brockers drop to us at 27 would be awesome and something most of us don't expect to happen.

Barron at 31 is ideal for me.

I like Cam Johnson more than Vinny Curry. Johnson has actually played 3-4 OLB for Al Groh. Also has experience playing 4-3 DE.

Marvin Jones at 2b is great.

Ben Jones could be had w/ our 3rd. Might be hard to pass that up even if Connoly is already resigned. Give Jones a year to learn and then kick dan to RG when Waters retires? Something to think about.
