1(27) - Mark Barron, SS Alabama



Thank goodness for the double hernia that drops him into our range. Here's a Gronkowski opportunity, all over again. Got the natural instincts to play in the deep secondary for us.

1(31) - Andre Branch, OLB Clemson



Honestly, I was skeptical until I started watching his film. He's an explosive hard hitting player that plays with a ton of energy. Love it. Prototypical size for an OLB in BB's scheme.

2(48) - Rueben Randall, WR LSU



Great speed and body control. Sweet hands. Deep WR class this year. Pair him with Welker, Branch, Gronk and Hernandez to cause all kinds of trouble. Sorry Ochocinco!

2(63) - Kevin Zeitler, OG Wisconsin



Elite talent for the interior line. So hard to pick out difference makers at OG, but Zeitler's film has him pulling and blowing up opposing defenses. Between him and Mankins, the interior OL becomes a weapon for us.

3 - Ryan Broyles, WR Oklahoma



Give him a medical redshirt, and we've got another star in our receiving corp. Yes, that's two great WRs in the same class. BB does some of his best work in twos: Gronk and Hernandez; Asante and Wilson; Mayo and Guyton.

27. Kendall Reyes DT UConn - underrated 3-4 DE with all the physical attributes including strength (34 reps) and long arms.

31. TRADE down to #39 for 2013 #2 pick

39. Harrison Smith SS Notre Dame - This could be Mark Barron depending on how far he falls (double sports hernia). Smith is like a LB playing Safety. His ability to play in the box and cover TE's and RB's is key.

48. Shea McClellin LB Boise St. - incredibly athletic DE that showed at the combine that he has what it takes to make the transition to OLB in 3-4. He has the measurable that BB required for the position.

63. Josh Robinson CB Central Florida - Compare his measurable against Devin McCourty. Robinson's are better. He is an inch shorter but slightly heavier. Check the tape of him against AJ Green of Georgia ... held him to 77 yards and no TDs. Nobody threw against him last year. 38 starts in his 3 years at UCF.

94. TRADED for #116 & 158 (CIN)

116. Marvin Jones WR CAL - Gifted and productive starting 38 games and having at least one catch in 38 straight games. Big receiver at 6'2" but still ran 4.46.

126. Jake Bequette OLB Arkansas - Another DE/OLB conversion project that has the sack moves to be a force on 3rd downs.

158. TRADE 176 & 189 (PHI)

176. Devon Wylie WR Fresno St. - One of the fastest and quickest WR's in the draft. He is also an excellent PR. He is a Welker clone. Despite his short stature, I think he is put together enough to handle the pounding in the slot.

189. Derek Wolfe DT Cincinnatti - Big East Defensive Player of the Year. Has good motor and will put pressure on the QB from DT position. Reminds me of former Bearcat Mike Wright.

I've been praying we'd draft an olb since Willie and Vrabel were still around (to do what Pitt does and keep young talent in the pipeline in what I think is an absolute crucial position on our defense). And, it's pretty rare that players actually fit EXACTLY what BB is looking for in size (height, arm length, weight) and speed. And, Andre Branch definitely fits the bill. However, the guy is very undisciplined in his run support, and did not set the edge well at all! Does he have the ability to do so with good coaching? Maybe, but I didn't see him do it at the college level, which definitely raises some red flags for me about him.

I don't know who you were watching. The thing that first piqued my interest in Branch was his ability to play disciplined run defense. He does a great job of being controlled on reverses and backside runs, and generally stays square to the line of scrimmage and strings out plays toward the sidelines. Often times his teammates let him down and Clemson gives up a lot of rushing yards, but I rarely saw teams rush straight toward him.

I really think that Branch has loads of untapped potential. He will be a far better pro than collegian.

Nice mock Mark. We have to address the defense. Pretty sure we address wr thru free agency. We shall see. Heard an interview with McClellin on Scott Wright's podcast. Seemed like a great kid. Humble, hard working, witty and adaptable to different positions. Perfect patriot player. I see an eventual replacement for Ninko there. Nothing wrong with Ninko for another year or two. But, need depth behind him. Like Reyes. Hoping Still drops. But, I doubt it. Harrison Smith seems like a good fit for us too. Hope Bequette and Wolfe fall that far. Got em both in the 3RD ON my current horizontal board.

I think Branch had to learn how to play the run because teams certainly didn't run at Da'Quan Bowers in 2010. I actually think that helped Branch because he got to learn to rush the passer when offenses were focusing on Bowers and learnt to play the run when offenses were targeting him. I think it really helped his development and gave him an opportunity to have a breakout year in 2011, because he wasn't the focus. Playing second fiddle for a year allowed him to develop at his own pace, instead of being thrust into the spotlight and having pressure on him day 1.

if branch gets drafted by the pats in the first round, that will be an obvious admission that not drafting brooks reed last year or connor barwin 2 years before was a huge mistake. branch is neither as strong or as fast as either, and never showed anything in college that these 2 have not shown.

Wolfe played same conference as Reyes and put up almost double # of sacks (9.5 vs 4.5) and a lot more TFLs (21.5 vs 13.5), Wolfe also had a better 3-cone and short shuttle at the combine, yet somehow Wolfe should be drafted around 200, while Reyes in the first round? Both were in my latest mock; I also had Wolfe much lower. Why? Because of market demands. It's called understanding value and getting two highly rated talents instead of "reaching" for a guy available rounds later and missing out on his more highly rated counterpart.

I don't even know where to start. Reed was not a good fit here. Decent player, and he's shown well in Houston, but for the cost required (early second), he wasn't worth it. Moreover, I don't like him very much for our scheme, whether we line up in a 43 or in a 34; he's simply not a two-gap player.

Yes, Barwin would have been great. But drafting Branch, who has a much longer track record at the position, in addition to more prototypical size and better run defense, is hardly a mea culpa. I would argue that he's closer to the Pats mold for a high draft investment at OLB than Reed or Barwin (although Barwin was one of my all-time greatest binkies), because he represents far less risk in relation to the reward.

FACT is Wolfe had almost twice # of sacks and a lot more TFLs playing the same conference and same position (DT) as Reyes. Wolfe also posted better 3-cone and short shuttle at the combine. No way should Reyes be rated higher than Wolfe. No friggin way. Wolfe is clearly a better "talent" that Reyes is.
Wolfe is a much better pass rusher, not even close. And thats what the Pats need.

1a 27) Fletcher Cox - I would take any one the top four DT. Preferably Fletcher Cox, but he's probably gone by then, as a back up Konz should fall.

1b 31) Stephen Gilmore - He has the size and speed that the pats look for, hes a team leader that understand everyone's role. With his 40 and 3 cone time isn't a reach late in the first. I also like a trade for a first next year with the potential for a high pick if a QB that someone want is still on the board.

Trade NE 48 (420) and 95 (120) for 36 (540)

2a 36) Andre Branch - Has the size and speed to play 3-4 OLB in the pats system, plus DE in nickel.

Trade NE 63 for 2nd round next year, maybe more depending on the the team?

4 127) Philip Blake - picking my fellow Canadian to round out the draft, this pick would change if Konz is drafted in the first.

I only drafted 4 players, i just don't think that BB is going to draft 8 - 12 guy again for a while, the rebuilding of the defence is mostly complete, he's been trading away the low picks this year.

Connor Barwin is more like Andre Branch in terms of length and that he can possibly offer something in coverage from the OLB spot. The only thing I'm curious about is with Ninkovich's uprising last year do we take a guy with Branch's skillset or a more down hill rusher? Branch might not be the elephant/Jack LB that we need, he might just be another 3-4 SAM.

I love Andre Branch, btw but I don't think him and Ninko would be on the field at the same time (except for in sub packages where we move Ninko to DE). Or maybe we could move Ninko to the Jack spot and play Branch at the Sam since Ninko isn't bad in coverage but he isn't that great. Maybe it would be a good problem to have after all...

Neither of those scouting reports mentioned the Big East. You are basing a lot of your opinion on statistics. That's not always the best way to evaluate defensive players. Paul Posluszny is one of the leaders in tackles every year. Yet, I know he's not one of the best lb's in the league. And, if you read my post. I said there's no doubt he could make it. Some of these draft sites don't think he's a top prospect. The posters on this site didn't make up those reports. You need to point your anger towards nfl.com and cbssports.com not posters.
