* Ye Official 2012 Mock Draft Thread!! *

this is my mock draft:
Patriots Mock Draft:
1st Round:
Pick 27: Dont'a Hightower, LB, Alabama
Pick 31: Traded for 2nd Round and 5th Round this year 1st round next year
2nd Round:
Pick 48: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers
Pick 63: Mitchell Schwartz, OT/OG, California
Pick ??: Billy Winn, DE, Boise State
3rd Round:
Pick 94: Harrison Smith, SS, Notre Dame
4th Round:
Pick 126: Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt
5th Round:
Pick ??: Keith Tandy, CB/FS, West Virginia

Unfortunately, it is a metaphysical impossibility that Smith will last until #94.

He'll be a 3rd rounder, maybe #94, maybe earlier but I'm sure the Pats will end up with another 3rd rounder in somewhere. The only pick trade I included was for one that I feel would be reasonably realistically happening.

There's a pretty good chance he won't be available at 63. There's a chance he sneaks into the late first, according to reports.

Got my binkies all lined up, nice and neat:

1(27) - Mark Barron, SS Alabama
Thank goodness for the double hernia that drops him into our range. Here's a Gronkowski opportunity, all over again. Got the natural instincts to play in the deep secondary for us.

1(31) - Andre Branch, OLB Clemson
Honestly, I was skeptical until I started watching his film. He's an explosive hard hitting player that plays with a ton of energy. Love it. Prototypical size for an OLB in BB's scheme.

2(48) - Rueben Randall, WR LSU
Great speed and body control. Sweet hands. Deep WR class this year. Pair him with Welker, Branch, Gronk and Hernandez to cause all kinds of trouble. Sorry Ochocinco!

2(63) - Kevin Zeitler, OG Wisconsin
Elite talent for the interior line. So hard to pick out difference makers at OG, but Zeitler's film has him pulling and blowing up opposing defenses. Between him and Mankins, the interior OL becomes a weapon for us.

3 - Ryan Broyles, WR Oklahoma
Give him a medical redshirt, and we've got another star in our receiving corp. Yes, that's two great WRs in the same class. BB does some of his best work in twos: Gronk and Hernandez; Asante and Wilson; Mayo and Guyton.

I doubt he gets picked in the 1st, mid-late 2nd round is the earliest I see him going, but I think it is more likely he falls to the third. Maybe trade up into the second or early third if we can swing the right deal and take him.

When I see people still clamoring over guys like Donta Hightower, Vinny Curry and Nick Perry I ask myself: "Did anyone even watch the combine?"

.

I've been praying we'd draft an olb since Willie and Vrabel were still around (to do what Pitt does and keep young talent in the pipeline in what I think is an absolute crucial position on our defense). And, it's pretty rare that players actually fit EXACTLY what BB is looking for in size (height, arm length, weight) and speed. And, Andre Branch definitely fits the bill. However, the guy is very undisciplined in his run support, and did not set the edge well at all! Does he have the ability to do so with good coaching? Maybe, but I didn't see him do it at the college level, which definitely raises some red flags for me about him.

The combine is over rated, look at what they do playing actual football.

There's not a whole lot of film of 2/3 of them dropping into coverage, though. That's what the LB drills at the combine are for. I wasn't watching, but supposedly all 3 looked stiff. We already knew this about Hightower to some degree, but not really about Curry or Perry.

Look at what Hightower did at Alabama, the guy is a beast, I'm sure Saban would share that with Belichick when they talk.

and in the 2013 or 2014 draft I want the Patriots to take Tom Wort, he played for my High School and was the best player on the team as a Sophomore, led EG to a championship. Has been great for Oklahoma Sooners too.

When I see people ragging Hightower, I ask myself do they watch any film. Seriously, you cannot watch Hightower play at Alabama and not realise what a stud he is. He may no longer be a fit for a full time OLB position but I'd snatch him up at 48 to be a stud backup LB. Kid is superb.

This is a very nice draft. Swap Randle for Marvin Jones, add a decent CB in round 4 and I'd give you an A++.

Right. And he'd be a good pick at 48. But he seemed to be questionable in coverage, and the drills seemed to confirm that (from what I've read, not seen). The last think the Pats need is another LB who's a liability in coverage.

He's fine in the flat or short middle in zone but I wouldn't want to expose him too much in coverage. He'll be a utility player on our team - special teams, backup ILB and situational OLB and that's why I no longer have a first round grade on him for the Patriots. But if I was a team looking for a 3-4 thumper, I'd have a mid first round grade on him - he's a better all-rounder than Upshaw.

Grew up about an hour away from me in England too...really rooting for the guy!

Another guy I'm going to be watching closely over the next 3-4 years is a guy called Elliot Hoyte. Unlike Wort Hoyte is a true British prospect. Coached up on the D Line of Great Britain by my mentor and coach of 4 years Norman Navarro over here in England, he showed up at a Boise summer camp trying to make a name for himself and got offered a full scholarship. Great measurables and Boise liked what they saw!

I don't know if anyone has seen the new WalterFootball mock yet, but I think a lot of people will be excited by it. I believe everyone but the 4th round pick is someones binky on this board.

27. Michael Brockers- DE/DT- LSU
31. Andre Branch- DE/OLB- Clemson
48. Harrison Smith- S- Notre Dame
63. Marvin Jones- WR- Cal
94. Casey Hayward- Vanderbilt
126. Donte Piage-Moss- DE/OLB- UNC (Jarius Wright went the next pick)

While I have to say, I wouldn't quite class any of these players as Binky's of mine, I don't think we could have a better draft than this (apart from DPM at 126). My only problem is I think all of the first 5 guys are better players than the position they are selected, so I don't think they will be there. If they are though, I think this could arguably go down as BB best draft ever.

And for manxman, Jamel Fleming goes 102, so you could easily put him instead of Hayward, although I really like both.

What a difference a year makes. There were a few of us proclaiming Brewster a 1st round talent after last years draft. Your right, now after today's performance he more than likely fell out of the 3rd round. He slipped off balance during one of the drills and just looked completely out of place the whole day. Hopefully he can take this experience and correct some of the issues and look better at his pro day to improve his status.

I never understood the fascination with Brewster. I watched him intently during a bowl game in 2010 and he was an absolute JAG IMO.

By permalinks, can I assume that you referring to linking to a specific post, rather than the entire thread as a whole? If that is what you want to do just click on the number of the post (#818, in the upper right hand corner in this case).
