So any play where one receiver runs a deep post is a terrible play call?I'm "blaming" someone else because the call was terrible. There are two separate issues here:
1.) Play call
2.) Play execution
Both were terrible. The second issue is on Brady. The first issue is on BOB.
I agree with everybody who is not blaming Bill O'Brien for yesterday's grinder.
I agree that the bomb was a bad idea at that point in the game, but Brady already said he saw something and he took a shot at the end zone right after Spikes' interception - gutsy. If Slater catches it, B.O.B. is a genius and we'll miss him.
With Matthew Slater at wide receiver - YesSo any play where one receiver runs a deep post is a terrible play call?
Did the New England Patriots run Matthew Slater on a deep post all day long? You do know we run them all day long right?
I think many of us were surprised at not continuing to run, when it was being so successful. On top of it all, while Brady was, for the most part, getting alot of time to throw, he did not have a good game. So, why not run the ball more?
It all doesn't matter, because they won.
I'll be honest, Shmessy. It sounded more like whining than sarcasm.. In fact, I had to do a double check to make sure it said SHMESSY and not Sean Da Patriot..
Dont know why we always blame everyone else but brady. Brady deserves as much blame for this play. He is no longer a 1st yr QB or flacco for that matter who has to call whatever his OC calls.
New York Giants 19th ranked rush defense.
NFL Stats: by Team Category
Less bombs to Slater, more runs by BJGE.
Have you considered that we ran effectively BECAUSE we were using the run sparingly?
If BJGE is gashing the Giants with the OL plowing through the nickel D I hope he doesn't go away from it again.
I have advocated a greater emphasis on the New England Patriots rushing attack since the AFC Divisional Playoff loss to the New York Jets last season. In the SB, given these two teams, the Patriots must turn to the playbooks of teams that have played us over the years.
Ball control. Run it down the opponent's throats. The Giants DL is a pass rush DL - - they can be had by our running game. Take as much time off the clock to limit the number of series Eli Manning gets to face our secondary.
If Vollmer can be ready for the game, we have a DEEP and TREMENDOUS OL. Even without him, our OL can dominate in the run game, but have problems in pass protection against their talented pass rushers.

I personally would scrap the empty backfield formation altogether, since it poses no threat of running the football whatsoever.
I am a lurker, but I finally decided to register because of this thread...
I don't disagree that O'Brien got away from the run to a fault yesterday. I also don't disagree that it probably shouldn't have been Slater running the route... But the play call after the INT in the 4th quarter was NOT a bad call.
It was, however, predictable. I think the Pats should have saved this play for second down assuming they got at least 4 yards on first down with the run.
Taking a shot like that after a big turnover is a great call. Like I said, the timing was just poor. Also, as others have pointed out, Brady made a mistake trying to force the play.
But please stop trying to say that going for a big play after that type of momentum swing is a bad call, because it isn't. It just wasn't a good call on first down.
If it were me, I'd have run a draw on first down - the Ravens were clearly expecting the Pats to try and capitalize on the turnover, that's why the go wasn't open. If you get fewer than 4-5 yards on first down, you run a quick middle screen on the next play (or something similar, doesn't have to be a traditional middle screen, can be a quick pick play or even a straight up slant, but definitely a three-stepper), the Ravens would have been looking run on second and long and their linebackers would have stepped up and hesitated long enough for this to get yardage. If you are 2nd and less than 5, you run play-action off the draw (or even a flea-flicker) and go deep. If it's not open, you look for an outlet or throw it away, then run another draw on or a screen on third down.
That, to me, is the way to handle that type of situation.
So any play where one receiver runs a deep post is a terrible play call?
See I'd think it was a great play design if it took 2 defenders covering Slater away from the rest of the play, if Brady had only made a good decision. With Matthew Slater at wide receiver - Yes
As far as I could tell that was the only play he was in for, but what does that have to do with anything?Did the New England Patriots run Matthew Slater on a deep post all day long?
But thats the point. It was a pass play that attacked the defense by running one receiver deep.No.
Any play with......
- MATTHEW SLATER going deep
- with a 3 point lead
- in the AFCCG
- on a day where Brady was having difficulty hitting the side of a barn
- with SEVEN MINUTES TO GO
- against a team we were owning on the ground
......is a terrible play call.
But nice try attempting to spin it out of recognition with "So any play where one receiver runs a deep post is a terrible play call?"
Many play calls have (at least) one receiver running deep on a post or other deep pattern. It's up to Brady to find the open man and not make a bad decision. On that play Brady admitted he was dead set on going deep there. That's on him, one of many plays in a BAD game for Tom Brady. If the Ravens weren't boneheads on penalties Brady might have had 4 interceptions, which is an execution issue on Brady's part.
It's ironic that you are criticizing O'Brien for going empty backfield and asking BOB to leave now, when Josh McDaniels is the king of empty backfield and shotgun formations.
