Of all the media commentators, I thought that the research and commentary of Solomon Wilcots on NFLN was the most penetrating and apropos.
It was also my pregame observation why I thought the Pats had a great chance to upset the Greatest Show on Turf, back in 2001.
Wilcots merely computed the defensive statistics for the last half season, actually 9 games including the last Playoff game.
It revealed that the defensive stats of those 9 games, a reasonable sample, projected over a full season, would have placed the Pats as the 4th rated in Points Allowed in the league. The turnover statistics and sacks would have actually LED the league in both cases; and the Pats Defense would have been 1st in turnovers, and 1st in sacks. He would have noted that the run Defense declined marginally, but did not mention it as it was marginal and insignificant, and probably due to pass defense emphasis, and injuries to the ILBs.
Wilcots deduced from this that the Pats Defense has changed and grew from a 4-3, to now a 3-4 and a 4-3/3-4 mixed Defense. Further he noted during the last 9 games, the Pats played many games without its best defenders who were lost to injuries. Virtually all of whom have returned, worked off rust, and are healthy now.
We pats fans know that Bill Belichick teams gain strength over the season and frequently get better and more comfortable as the practices and corrections add up. We Pats followers know that; but it's nice to finally have a media commentator to note and confirm that fact. :snob::snob:
