* Ye Official 2012 Mock Draft Thread!! *

I was going to ask about this. Does anyone see him being able to fulfill a Jermaine Cunningham 3-4 role for us? He's got the size, is a good blitzer and provides obvious excellent cover inside as well - I think he'd be a definite defensive upgrade for us (providing he can play on the outside). And unfortunately, he may be about the only defensive option left for us in the bottom of the first from a 3-4 perspective.

Of those two options, I'd take No2. Actually, just noticed that Rang has Devon Still going no3 to Carolina. I know he's shooting up draft boards but I'm not sure he belongs ahead of Matt Kalil.

Hightower's workouts/combine are going to factor in where he goes. If he runs a 4.9, he's only an ilb. If he can run a 4.7, there are going to some other options. He's a lot thicker than Cunningham. So, from a strength angle. He can do it. Not sure he's got the explosiveness off of the edge to do it. I've been talking about Still all year. That's too high. I feel that if the qb's come out. They're going 1-2-3. Luck-Barkley-RG3. I did a mock like that a couple of weeks ago and had Carolina trading down to like 9 and taking him. I thought that might be a little for Still.

I think Pittsburgh had something like 5 scouts at the Iron bowl last weekend and all five appeared to be diehard Hightower and/or Upshaw fans.

I think Pittsburgh is after Hightower or Upshaw in a big way.

Probably Hightower. They are set w. Harrison, Woodley and Worilds at OLB. They need a good ILB to team up w. Timmons.

Thanks for that. According to CBSsports he runs a 4.74 which I appreciate is unofficial.

My reasoning is that I'm struggling to find decent defensive value in the first round for the Patriots. Still and Upshaw are most likely off the board by the time we pick (and I'm not sure either warrant a trade up) and the remaining possibilities are de/OLb transitions which we've not shown a great deal of interest in the past. If Hightower can play two roles, namely MLB and OLB, then he might well have first round value for the Pats and I think improve our defense. Short of that, unless BB likes one of the hybrids or one of the first-second round corners or receivers, we could be looking at trading out of both first round slots.

Vinny Curry - Marshall should be on your watch list. He might be able to play a 3-4 olb or 4-3 de. Not a deep area in this draft. Melvin Ingram - South Carolina. Not sure he can play in space as a 3-4 olb. I see him more as a 4-3 de. So. Carolina moves him to dt to get a better pass rush since they have all-world frosh Clowney. And Devin Taylor. Really, nobody else other than Hightower if you want that 3/4 olb/de.

Farrier is getting very long in the tooth, but still very active.

However I think Harrison is 32 or so years old as well.

I like Vinny Curry the best of the three you mention. Question is, would his small school status be too much of a knock to take him out of first round consideration for us? I saw Ingram run a fake punt 68 yards for South Carolina, including vaulting over a defender - love his athleticism, but at 6'1", not sure he's a great fit at OLB. Devin Taylor I see as a very good middle term prospect, but again I'm not sure that wins him a first round grade for the Pats.

Added to all that, there's a lot of second round hybrid types, it would make more sense to trade down into the second (or use our second rounders) and take our pick then.

I think this is potentially an important draft for the Pats. There's not much here in the early rounds, for 3-4 teams, and plenty for 4-3's. Perhaps BB decides on a permanent switch to 4-3, drafts for 43/34 flexibility or, like last year, drafts to build up other areas like WR or trades into next year.

I'm not particularly excited, at the moment, by this draft from a Patriot perspective. Thankfully it's still early and much can change.

The small school thing has me wondering about Curry being drafted by the pats too. Same with Dontari Poe from Memphis. Seem like ideal fits for us. Other than Logan Mankins all of Belichick's firsts have been BCS conferences. If Saban gives BB the green light on Upshaw, I wonder if we move up for him like we did for Daniel Graham in 02? I don't want to see Upshaw get picked by the Jets. We gave up our 2nd to swap firsts and thirds that year. I'd be ok with that. We can get at least a 3rd back by moving back a few spots from 1b. Helps off-set the pick lost in the trade up.

I want them to use their 2 first round picks this time around!I want them to draft a DE and maybe a DT.I like Devon Still from penn st.They need to get better on the d-line.

Anyone have 10 yard torrent? I need more Marshall games. Doing a Curry video. I need to see more. Unfortunately, the site I use only has 1 Marshall game.

Thanks

I don't know if i am quite sold on Still. He definitely has the size, but does he look like he plays too upright to anyone else?

From the tape i have seen OL seem to get under him quite a bit.

I would say that might be (not sure if it is) is because he is 6'5 ish going against Guards who are 6'1-6'3. Low man wins and all.
He might do better going against taller OT's in the NFL.

Could be wrong though.

Vinny Curry is a verified 6" 3.25".

My 2nd mock:

1a + 2b - trade up and take Coples
1b + 2a - trade up and take Devon Still
3 - traded for 2013 2nd

Enough trading down. If you get 2 good players out of 5 picks your pretty happy. While more picks gives you more chances to hit moving up gives you a better chance at hitting. This will never happen but I'll take these two over any 5 players your getting at 24 and later. Next year's DL of Coples - Wilfork - Still - Carter (and sub rusher Mark Anderson) would be an absolute terror for opposing OL's. Address your most pressing needs (FS and 3rd CB) in FA. O ya and we still come away with some extra ammo for next years draft.

Interesting idea. But, we have some holes at FS, WR and C that have to be addressed. Along with an olb who can play in space.
