2012 Patriot Picks: What players, what positions do you want?

Scott Wright from Draftcountdown has a mock up. I thought he did a pretty good job identifying the top 20 or so players. Who knows what order they'll be in? He has us picking Malcolm Floyd - WR N Dame and Mark Barron - S - Bama. Floyd has some off-field issues. Barron duplicates what Chung brings to the table and isn't needed at all. My binkies weren't picked. Jeff Fuller and Vinny Curry. And, the early favorite for board binkie Mike Brewster not taken either.

As much as I like Floyd, I don't want him. The dude has serious character issues. He has had 2 DUI's in college. 2!!!. I mean, wtf...seriously. You live off campus. How lazy are you that you can't either take a taxi, or call a buddy or even walk back?.
Floyd would be good though. I think he is kinda like Ocho. Can run deep, great in the middle. Plus it's a plus that he has had 2 years in a Charlie Weiss system.

If a draft pick tests positive at the combine for any drugs. I believe they come into the league under the drug/alcohol program. More testing and likely to be suspended if they test positive. Not sure if Floyd will or not because of the 2 dui's. Guys like Vincent Jackson and Santonio Holmes could be suspended for a year with any mis-steps. You've gotta be careful with anyone who comes in under that program.

I think sometimes these "off-field" issues are overblown. Give me a guy that can play. I'd take the risk for guys like V-Jax, Santonio, Marshall, etc.

Obviously you'd ideally want a guy like Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, or Andre Johnson. Professionals on and off the field, immense talents. But the guys with the whole package are rare.

Give me a guy like Holmes/Marshall/V-Jax with immense talent but the potential to miss games IF they foul up again over guys like Ochocinco/Branch, who have no personal conduct policy issues with the NFL but aren't nearly as talented.

In the first 2-3 rounds the team will go BPA at positions of need. What are these positions of need? So many variables it could be anywhere at this point. I'd say WR, DL, LB and S are the main candidates.

Center is a possibility but I think the perceived need is really overblown on this board. Since Brewster seems to be the favorite name thrown around I'll guarantee he won't be a Patriots next year. Should be fun reading some of the posts when we pass over him.

I agree, there are a lot of variables to consider. But I think BB goes heavy on defense in this draft.

If BB stays in a 4-3 he will need a DT and 2 DE's

At LBer, I like Mayo on the weakside and really like Fletcher over Spikes in the middle, not sold on Ninkovich on the strong side.

The two Alabama safeties would look great in a Patriots uniform and plug two huge holes for us.

1) Michael Floyd WR- Notre Dame: first round receiver that goes up and gets the ball, run's sharp routes, has great hands and is a great deep threat. He's had his share of off the field problems though....probably not happening lol
2) Mohamed Sanu WR- Rutgers: Good route runner with incredible hands.
3) Robert Lester/Mark Barron: Lester would be the better traditional free safety but BB has talked about teaching both safety positions to our safeties.
4) DE- Jury still out
5) C- see above

I went to the PSU/Bama game Ochmed. Forgot to DVR it though. Kirkpatrick looked real good for Bama. As did their whole defense.
Bama D vs PSU O was just a mis-match. Schematically, talent and execution. 3 To's on PSU's first drive! WTF?? Was a pretty good battle between Bama ol and PSU dl. No sacks but PSU contained Richardson for the most part. Would have done even better had our offense been able to keep them off of the field instead on one 3 and out after another. Both defenses got their hands on a number of passes. Only one pick though.

Yep, the Bama defense is just loaded with talented guys that are going to be playing on Sunday. A lot of offenses are going to be mismatched against them.

The big DT for Penn State, Sill?, looked pretty good to me. Any thoughts?

He played very well against the run. Got excellent penetration. He was injury plagued in his early career. Backed up Ogbu and Odrick in 09. I thought he played ok last year but the rest of the line collapsed around him. He got double teamed all of the time. He reportedly got himself in tip-top shape this off-season. Got his body fat pct down. I see him as a good run-stuffing dt. Want to see more of a pass rush from him. Some of the younger guys on PSU's defense might fit our scheme down the road. Mauti as a weak-side lb in the 4-3. Same with Fortt and Hodges. I like D'Anton Lynn the cb. Might be able to switch to FS in the pros. I'm just praying Joepa retires after this year so that we can get the program headed in the right direction.

I'm not impressed with this years DLine class.

Alameda Ta'amu looks terrible.
Marcus Forston is overrated. He doesnt look big or strong enough to play DT in the NFL.
Jerel Worthy is just a run stuffer.

Jared Crick is good but not an elite talent.

None of the DE's impress me that much. Coples is good but will be a Top 10 pick. Other than that, Vinny Curry is probably the best of the bunch right now.

Seems like this draft suits our needs on offense better. We need a C and a WR. Lots of help there. If we fill those two positions it appears our offense is set for a few years. Something like this would be a great draft IMO.

1a Peter Konz - C - Wisconsin or Brewster - OSU

2a Vinny Curry - DE - Marshall (after deal down like NO deal this yr)
If a LB like Te'o or Burdefict avail. I'd take them at 1a. Doubt they fall that far though. NO going to win double digits minimum.

2b Lance Lewis - WR - E Carolina - Destroyed S. Carolina cb gilmore in their season opener. Also like Owusu - Stanford, Broyles - OU, Boykin - Va Tech. Have 5 wr's in 1ST(Blackmon, Jeffrey, Floyd, Fuller and Childs)

2c Nigel Bradham - OLB - FSU - Going to get a good look to see how he plays in space against OU Saturday Night.

3 traded to Oakland for their 2nd next year. Deja vu all over again.

We pick up that extra 1st and 2nd in 2013. We'll trade up one of these years and catch us all by surprise though. Try to get that FS thru free agency. Would rather have a vet there than a rookie anyway.

I do think you are right about BB loving to stock pile second round picks. He must see great value in that round because he has secured a ton of them recently.

I wish he would abandon the third round altogether. He never seems to have much luck in that round. (Although I like Price, if healthy)

I watched the OU/FSU game last night.

Brandon Jenkins
Didn't have a great statistical impact on the game but I liked how they moved him around a lot, showing he could play in space. He explodes of the line getting unbelievable jumps abd can hold up against the run when he's not double teamed.

Nigel Bradham
Looked fast and explosive but too many mental mistakes (penalties)

Broyles
looked solid but was outplayed but Stiller who made 2 crazy catches.

Watched USC and Arizona State, what about this Deveron Carr. Seemed to be fluid in coverage and some ball skills. He was hurt 2010 and didnt play after october.

How about him if we can get him in the mid rounds ?

The highest priority I think is a big-time FS. Maryland's Kenny Tate maybe. I'd like to take one early and a second one later.

An OC and a RG I think are also priorities. But I wouldn't spend a 1st on one. Michigan's David Molk or Wisconsin's Peter Konz are my favorite OCs so far. I also like Notre Dame's Braxston Cave. Maybe we take two of the three and move one to RG.

A very good rushing OLB would be very appreciated. So far 'Bama's Courtney Upshaw has caught my eye.

And WR I think is needed. Ocho is improving, but hasn't caught fire like we hoped. I'm much higher on Edelman than many here. But IMO he's a returner first and WR second. Branch is getting old. And Welker needs to be re-signed for a nice big, long contract. Oklahoma's Ryan Browles is a guy I really like, but he shouldn't go super high in the 1st.
