Well it's time to claim some players from other teams. Teams are like vulchers...(sorry if I messed up the spelling). They were all waiting for our cuts. I knew we would lose some good ones.

Already have (LS Danny Aiken from the Bills).

More than a dozen teams tried to sign Yeatman as a UDFA, BB won over his agent.

Which makes it all the more puzzling that he then allows Yeatman to be exposed to the waivers, but I guess it came down to being a numbers game for BB, knowing that the odds are very low that he would lose all the options he has at backup TE (e.g., Crumpler from the shadow roster) and obviously put more value into stocking the roster with temporary fillers for the castoffs (e.g., Waters) as well as developing talent (Cannon).

So, do the Patriots players who were claimed on waivers like Yeatman, Smith, etc. have to be placed on the claiming team's 53?

Yes. The alternative (that teams could force players to be on their PS) would be ridiculous.

Good points.

Also, once that player clears waivers (i.e., if no other team makes a claim on him) he can then be signed by any of the 32 teams to either the 53-man roster, or to the PS, as opposed to the waiver claim meaning he has to go on the 53-man roster.

Once on the PS another team can try to sign him to their 53-man roster, but it's up to the player; he doesn't have to go to that other team. Another team cannot sign a PS player to their own practice squad; he would have to be released first, like Tyrone McKenzie was last year going from the Pats' PS to Tampa Bay's PS.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mardy Gilyard join the Patriots practice squad

My question for anyone in the know, why have the Patriots maintained a roster spot for this Jeff Tarpinian character? Did he even play in the preseason (can't recall...)? Any good?

That is a very good question. I don't remember even seeing the guy on the field.

There are two additional caveats to poaching from another team's PS that don't apply to claiming a player off waivers: first, in the former case, the player is guaranteed three weeks' salary; second, there are rules about doing it at certain times (e.g., you cannot sign such a player in the week leading up to a game against that team).

I've never understood why the first one doesn't apply to waiver claims as well; in my mind, it should.

Yeah I'm a little confused as to how BB has handled a couple moves as of late. Im sure all will be clear in due time. I'm just surprised Tarpinian wasn't cut to save Yeatman/Smith or Maneri/Austin from waiver wires. We have a great team and I don't doubt Belichick has a plan but thats 4 young guys we may lose due to the decision of keeping Tarpinian. I really don't think Tarpinian would've been claimed and would have cleared waivers. He wasn't seen much in preseason. Guy better be or I hope is a stud.

Looks like it's almost a certainty that Garrett Mills makes the team or the return of Crumpler

Garrett Mills and Alge Crumpler are not in any realistic sense interchangeable.

but thats 4 young guys we may lose due to the decision of keeping Ryan Mallett.

This makes just as much sense.

It's a one-for-one thing. Yes, BB apparently felt Tarpinian was a better use of a roster spot than any of Yeatman, Smith, Austin, and Maneri, but getting rid of Tarpinian would only let them keep ONE of those players.

we lost both TE's this is Bull-****:(

If they don't make other teams 53 don't we get them back?

They're on the 53s now; that's how a waiver claim works. If they get cut, then they go through waivers again. If they reach the Pats, the Pats can sign them to the 53; if they clear waivers, the Pats can sign them to the PS.

Think we will see Yeatman sooner than later..

I think we're lucky he cleared waivers - though pretty much every team had similar cuts they wanted to re-sign to the PS given this shortened off-season.

If someone winds up having a need at TE they may have to make the choice to sign him rather than let him walk.
