Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather

I can only think BB sees Dowling as our future FS. I hope so, the kid has got game.

I said when the Pats drafted Dowling that he would replace Meriweather not Bodden. I still think that may be the case. You watch this guy play in college and he looked like a safety in his play.

I knew that at the most Meriweather would be on the roster through this season. Felt there was a chance he would be traded before this year (obviously, I didn't realize they wouldn't be able to trade him).

The thing I don't get is that everyone in the media says you cannot convert a rookie from CB to safety this quickly and be successful as if the Pats never did it with Eugene Wilson. Granted Dowling wouldn't have Harrison and Law helping him out in the secondary which is significant, but the Pats have done it before.

I had high hopes for Meriweather. Good luck on your future endeavors, Brandon.

Re: (Edit: debunked) Merriweather a NY Jet - Soon to be Champs

Not hearing a lot of early buzz on Big Bang Clock... Got to think that any shopping Bill did had not panned out prior to Thursday's tilt because they certainly weren't playing him in the 4th quarter to showcase his immense talents on the eve of cutdowns... Read in the Globe that perhaps Sanders cut actually could have been predictive of Meriweather's. He wasn't improving and absent his mentor/hall monitor he was likely to regress even farther. Also he didn't show up in tip top shape coming off the lockout.

I wouldn't be surprised at the end of the day if it simply came down to Bill being unwilling to allow a guy who inexplicably kept landing on pro bowl rosters yet could not seemingly embrace the concept of coaching to continue to exist on his roster lest his attitude rub off on any other impressionable young talents...

Got the feeling a lot of personnel guys and DC's are pouring over the tape trying to figure out if they can salvage something worthwhile from this kid whose only legit claim to fame was becoming the league's poster boy for the illegal helmet hit... Ultimately somebody will give him a prove it deal, which is about all most teams are handing out to the myriad of FA who flooded the market this season anyway. But they will do so with some trepidation, pro bowl nods aside, because of the way his time here unfolded and ultimately ended.

Re: (Edit: debunked) Merriweather a NY Jet - Soon to be Champs

So we cut a guy in a contract year on his rookie deal without an adequate replacement and allow him to go over to the Jets? Brilliant !
Two time pro bowler, a perennial fan favorite here in New England. I predict a first ballot Pats HoF.

As far as replacing him, BB is hard at work teaching Ihedigbo to take bad angles and get out of position. Whether Ihedigbo will be ready by game one or not isn't certain. As a backup measure, the Patriots have extended feelers out to Shawn Mayer as a stop-gap player who can get out of position quickly.

I agree with other posters here who feel that Meri would have been a locker room distraction if he stayed...too many youngsters and other players here that could help poison their minds and have doubts creep in..(Haynesworth and Ocho come to mind).

I'll take the wait and see approach to what BB & Co. have up their sleeve....

Re: Merriweather a NY Jet - Soon to be Champs

Hmmm, other posters are able to give an opinion, then opine back on mine, and you are able to give yours too? Somehow it seems like my right to have an opinion is being questioned by you, interesting mixed message. Wish I cared enough to argue the point, but you are clearly not operating with a full deck here, long day?
I saw that too.

"I am allowed to have my opinion, and you and others can have any opinion you want as long as it agrees with mine, but if your opinion doesn't line up with mine then you are repressing me and need to be quiet IMMEDIATELY."

It would be funny if it didn't happen on a weekly basis.

Re: Pats trying to trade Brandon Merriweather

Landed on the Bears, per Chris Price.

Meriweather signs with the Bears

According to Schefter.

Smart move by Meriweather. I said the best place for him is a Tampa 2 system where freelancing is allowed.

Nice, good for him

Now all the Bears fans can struggle over the 1 R or 2 Rs in his name.

I knew he wouldn't be out of work for very long. I'd still take a Free safety that free lances from time to time over an unknow safety

Wow, 27 pages and counting.

Anyway, this is obviously not shocking since it was hinted at quite a bit, but it's still surprising. I certainly don't think we can automatically assume Belichick has some master plan here to bring in someone else, or that there is a hidden awesome starter on the roster.

I think BB was simply hoping to see improvement from Meriweather that didn't materialize. Now they have to make the best of what's left.

One thing I will say--a strong pass rush (which I think the Pats will finally have) and two top corners (which I think the Pats do have) can overcome a weakness in the secondary.

I'm very interesting in watching this defense play, that's for sure.

Re: Meriweather signs with the Bears

A one year deal. For his sake, I hope he has a good year.

Luckily, we dont play the Bears.. I do not want to see BrandonM lauching his helmet into our WRs/TE, like AHernan or Welker, that may cause serious injury..

IMO

That's why BB is coaching the team and you're at home on your computer averaging 8 posts a day every day for 5 years.

Re: Meriweather signs with the Bears

Big Bear Clock it is then. Good luck to him, unless he's playing the Pats.

I hope Dowling stays at CB- he has excellent man coverage technique that would be wasted if he were moved to safety. Size is not so important at safety (instinct and technique is) as it is at corner where you simply can't let the receiver dictate off the line if you want to be known as a good corner. In the small sample size that Dowling has given us in the 4th preseason game, he really disrupted the routes of the receivers lined up against him.

Re: Meriweather signs with the Bears

If there was any question as to how coveted Meriweather was as a NFL safety, the one-year deal announced by the Bears would appear to resolve it.

He could work better in the Bears' system, but he was a loose cannon with the Pats. Big physical ability and a 2 cent brain do not make a great fit for a complex Patriots defense.

Re: Meriweather signs with the Bears

Goodluck BM... it wasn't made to be

I wonder if Merri was a cancer to this young team? we know he was not aa leader

Re: Meriweather signs with the Bears

I was figuring the Colts and looking forward to him decapitating one of their tiny CB's while arriving late to break up the play. Oh well, at least we won't have to deal with all of the fake drama leading up to game week.

That is unless we play the Bears in the SB.igsfly:

Yeah I had a similar thought. I guess since BB has no tape, no idea about S other than his own, he should fire up the Quija Board....

Jeeezusssss....

I've been thinking the Bears are going to be one of the teams that has a big drop this year, this should be interesting... but yes, better at arms length. And we won't be seeing the Bears in the SB (IMO) vs. any AFC team.
