Pats Trade for Haynesworth (merged)

Along with the All-Pro defensive track record, Haynesworth brings that nasty physicality, arguably dirty/cheap playing, and tough aura back to the defensive line that has been lacking since Seymour left. I think Haynesworth will be motivated. BB isn't as stubborn scheme-wise, and I trust that he will find the perfect position/role for Haynesworth to dominate in.

I'm just glad the Pats did something this offseason. Welcome to New England Fat Albert.

Mankins for the Dline is an interesting way to put it.

First I was like oh no....thinking about it now. Basically no risk. Cut him if he acts up like Randy first year..if he really wants a ring..this is the year we find out..if not with pats then no one

Great move for you guys. No risk, huge upside.

Well BB has another toy to play situational football with. IIRC we were in a nickle package ~55% of D snaps. Lots of way to play this.

Cunningham, Haynesworth, Wilfolk, Wright/Deaderick as the pass rushing unit with Haynesworth/Wilfolk playing 1 gap inside Mayo and Guyton/Fletcher (pass coverage LB) at LB with Bodden, McCourty, Meriweather, Chung, Dowling/Bulter.

3 & 8 the situations look a lot nicer. Remember also that BB like to rotate the Big guys to keep them fresh on the DL. Great move.

My understanding was that Haynesworth hated playing NT in the 3-4. Maybe he won't mind playing DE, or maybe I'm just grasping at straws hoping that he's worth a $5M cap hit when openly and borderline-aggressively quitting on Shanahan indicates otherwise.

Either way, gotta admit that having a guy with his talent on this D could be huge if it all works out. It's definitely a classic case of buying low, and if the guy has any pride at all, he's going to be pissed off at how far his value has fallen. Unfortunately, I'm not sure that he does.

we run alot of 4 man fronts, so i think he will fit in alot of our packages.

Zo just made a good point (I know...) : Imagine if the Jets made this move. Fans would be apoplectic.

Good read

Washington Redskins have traded Albert Haynesworth to the Patriots. In Washington, Haynesworth was a bum. A malcontent, a horrible teammate and a stone, cold jackass. In New England, he'll turn into the best defensive lineman in football.

The move, first reported by ESPN and confirmed by me, is typical Bill Belichick. And it will work. Because this is what Belichick does. He takes reclamation projects, jerks and castoffs, like Randy Moss, shines them up, and turns them into Pro Bowlers.

There is no question -- no question at all -- that Haynesworth will be a great player once again the way he was in Tennessee. And all the Patriots will have given up is a fifth round pick.

Remember this: when Haynesworth was in Tennessee he was considered the best interior lineman in the sport at the time.

In some ways this trade is sad. Haynesworth is being rewarded for his disgraceful behavior in Washington. He's now going to the best organization in football after a shameful tenure with the Redskins. But hell. That's football.

I've called Belichick the best coach in the history of football and been mocked for it but it's true. He can coach anyone, anywhere, any time. He'll do it again with Haynesworth.

Fat Albert will soon be gone. Dominant Haynesworth is just around the corner.

Albert Haynesworth will now be an All-Pro - CBSSports.com

Erm.... time to brush up on the specifics.

unless his contract is restructured, then it too much. I have not seen the final contract yet as the deal has not been complete. Maybe they redo some money, but as it stands right now, under the Washington contract, its too much

LOL @ some of you clowns. Saying you hate a person you don't even know.

LOL @ you for calling people a clown you dont even know.

The specifics have been mentioned in this thread. He's set to make 5.4 million this season and 6.5 next season. Neither of which is guaranteed. And the Pats are on the hook for NO signing bonus amortization.

Haynesworth 5.4 million salary was supposed to have been guaranteed, but he missed minicamps last year that negated that clause. So, he can be cut at no loss to the Patriots. So, tell us again how it's too much.

I work in D.C. and all of the skins fans keep laughing at me for the Pats picking up Albert and telling me to enjoy this lazy, fat arse slob......I tell them gladly with no guaranteed money, a small contract for a beast D-lineman that has all the ability in the world and now he is on a team with a winning atmosphere and winning attitude.....If he can't turn it around now, he never will.....The time is now Albert...

Because the potential best Dline in the NFL isn't worth a 2013 5th rounder that could have been used on an OLB.

Potentially being monetarily free is also too much to risk. Don't you know anything?

Quick thoughts:

1. I'm sure BB consulted with Jim Schwartz on this decision.
2. I'd guess that Haynesworth is too dumb to pick up new schemes ... except that BB surely disagrees.
3. Haynesworth has an expensive contract. He has to be more than a 15-down change-of-pace player, or he'll be cut.
4. 3-4 DE isn't as bad for a moody guy who doesn't want to be NT as NT is. At NT, you assume a double-team, AND your first job is to ensure the two blockers don't get away from you. At DE, if you get controlled by a double-team it wasn't a serious failure, and if you get past the double-team it was a nice success.

Wow. That is some ... errr ... interesting logic there.

He's healthy, still in his prime..and he's crazy...so was Dillon...typical BB wager..low risk/high reward....try to get this through your heads, people who hate his salary...there is NO guaranteed money involved...there is NO cap hit if he doesn't work out as a Patriot...this is an extremely low risk for a POTENTIALLY major piece of the puzzle. He gives the Pats the flexibility to sub Wilfork or play a jumbo package with both commanding double teams inside.Classic Belechick.
