Interesting tidbit on rookie Markell Carter

A fun video to watch. Carter seems to have a good deal of athleticism and decent closing speed. He also shows an ability to beat a T around the corner, as well as overpower him to make a straight line to the QB. He also showed a mix of outside and inside rush, all good signs.

A few things concern me (and again, this is a sixth round pick, so this shouldn't come as a surprise):

1) His competition was obviously fairly low.

2) Many of those plays seemed to be set screen plays, where his pressure and ease to the QB looked to be a design of the offense.

3) I only saw two consistent moves: The duck the shoulder down and beat the T around the edge, and the straight forward bull rush (is that what it's called?). He'll need more and smarter moves at the pro level, as he'll find most tackles are more athletic than those he's faced in college.

If you go back and look at Vrabel when he first got here, the moves he beat tackles with most time were ducking the shoulder and the bull rush..

I could easily see Carter making the team as a special teamer for all facets of special teams. What will be interesting is whether he's used on the "HANDS" team if he makes the roster..

Considering how in-depth the coaches were on Carter's character, work ethic and determination, it seems odd that there is no mention of how quickly he learns or how coachable he is. I'm not sure if that is a reflection on Carter, or on the coaching staff. Does anyone have the skinny on the coaching staff at Central Arkansas? If this kid is coachable, I think he's got a shot.

Here is one statement that I think covers that in a round-about way..

He was always looking for whatever he could find to gain an edge on the offensive lineman he was going against.

The other is this quote:
He wants to win, whether it's in his college Algebra class, or on the field. That's his mentality and I think that's helped him become the player he is. He learned that from his parents and hopefully a little from his coaches. He always has that inner drive.

If he's got that inner drive and is always looking to gain an edge on the O-linemen, then I think he'll be coachable. Cause he'll know that the coaching is what will help him get there.

I don't expect much (as with any late rounder) but hope to be pleasantly surprised! We are rooting for you Markell!

The Vrabel comparisons don't stop there -- it seems he also excels at hand-to-hand combat and pass catching.

If we ever have a need at goal-line TE ...

It is what it is.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I'm intrigued also by that other guy we picked up from the UFL or whatever...he was a beast!

I also don't think ninko-vich (some called him stinkovich here) is that bad.

Markell Carter is a speculative pick -- but one who may surprise pleasantly. Carter was invited by Green Bay as one of their 30 player invitees pre-draft because they were seriously interested in him.Green Bay is a 3-4 team which typically looks for players with physical dimensions close to the Pats.

So, Carter was on the right radars for a late round pick.

Can't be worse than Shawn Crable.

I have Solder pencilled in for that role...since he started out as a TE....

Making the conversion from DE to Pats OLB is a most often a multi-year project. This guy can probably make the PS, so he will multiple years to convert. But he is realistic and willing to play ST. He might win an end of roster spot to provide him time to convert. Plus as a late pick, he won't burn too much money while he converts.

I hope to see what he becomes in 2013.

I for one am glad Belichick was able to Get Carter

It's a crap shoot....but ..give the guy some slack......just close your eyes and imagine him crowning sanchez :rocker:

I was going to say that.
We kept Crable around for what 3 yrs?
And when he wasn't hurt and actually on the field never generated anything remotely close to enough power to get to the QB.

Cunningham on the other hand, got within 2-3 feet of the QB.
So with more muscle I have to think he makes it.

So my point is: If Carter can develop the strength to get close enough to the QB he'll stick around.

I'm going to be honest and tell everyone that I had no idea who Markell Carter was until we drafted him, then I did some research. After that I feel very positive about him as a sixth round pick, I would guess that he could make the team as STer and maybe see some reps in time with the Defense. Let's say I'm very excited about his possibilities but am keeping that in check for the time being. Hope he pans out as I hope he will.
