Nate Solder

Belichick judged that we need an OT. He and dante judged that Solder was the #2 of the six OT's drafted in the first round (not counting Watkins).

We have Vollmer signed through 2012.
Perhaps Light will be back.
Perhaps Kaczur will be back.
Manieri and LeVoir compete for the #4 OT spot.

Solder will likely be given a year to develop as VOllmer was given, or not.

BOTTOM LINE
There is absolutely nothing wrong with using #17 to sign draft a LT.

Patriots line is lookin pretty right now.. if we could only keep mankins brady might need to start taking his line out to dinner every sunday

FYI, Volmer started 9 games his rookie year including the first round playoff loss, as the the Patriots late second round pick.

Re: Solder, really?

How in the world can you pass up Bowers AND Amukumara, for this guy, he could've very easily been there in the second round.

False. He was going to the Giants at 19 had the Pats passed.

I'll give you the same response I've done for everybody else. I'm glad you're smarter than Belichick.

who doesnt like a set of twin tower tackles...like that .....

I would think ..Vollmer will move back to Lights position and soldier with take Kazurs.

You need to protect the franchise....with so much uncertainty on the OL.

As for the defense, I think the marcus stroud signing is bigger than most people think...thats why line wasnt as high.... With 3 2's.....we can go in many directions..... now...even pick up ...a QB :singing:

Nice call. Gosselin's last mock had Solder to NYG at #19. Gosselin better than any other IMHO

FWIW, BB just said in his press conference that Solder will stay at LT

I'm of the school that you don't take an OL in the 1st round unless he projects to be a franchise LT. I wouldn't have been as big a fan of taking say a Pouncy in the 1st. But Solder, if he turns out to be that Franchise LT is well worth the pick investment.

If you see Solder turn into the next Orlando Pace, and with Dante's schooling, I think he's gonna get one of the top trainings of any OL in the league, you're going to see the Patriots offense continue to pile up 30+ ppg over the next few seasons. Give Brady a clean pocket and time to throw, and he will just pick apart those secondaries.

Round 2 is a good area to address defensive needs. I never expected BB to draft an OLB conversion project before round 2 anyways. A little surprised that he passed on DE at #28, but he got a pretty sweet deal to trade down so I can't blame him for that. We'll also be looking at second tier DL in round 2 and there is still some talent to be had there as well.

There's a LOT of the draft still to go folks so don't forget to tune in for Day 2. The Pats made their hay in this portion of the draft in 2010. I see no reason for that trend not to continue.

Belichick doesn't deserve criticism when it comes to drafting?

He's done his fair share of **** ups in the draft. This constant trading down is him thinking he is outsmarting everybody but after consecutive playoff losses where our lack of talent is evident we're the ones looking stupid. We have a need...we have solid players available. Why is it so goddamn hard to pick a player?

That joke of a defense helped the team go 14-2. That joke of a defense is getting two of its best veteran players and leaders back from injury next season. That joke of a defense is also not why the team lost to the Jets back in January. That joke of a defense is filled with young players like Spikes, Cunningham, Brace, Deaderick, McCourty, Chung, who will all continue to get better.

The defense will be tremendously better in 2011, and the team hasn't even drafted a single defensive player. They will before Friday ends.

If Quinn fell or if the team traded up to get him that would've been awesome. I think if the team felt Amukamara could convert into a good safety, I would've loved that pick at #17. Otherwise, Solder is a fantastic pick. Need intersects value. Huge upside. Team leader. Nasty. If Scarnecchia stuck his neck out and asked for a tackle in round 1, you better believe he is going to be awesome.

Lets face it,the defense was bailed out on more than one occasion in 2010 by the offense or other teams QBs making dumb throws or the opponents simply turning the ball over, many of which were not forced by our D.

Without Brady running the offense,A team with that D might have gone 4-12

The good news is the 2011 Patriots defense can't possibly be any worse than the 2010 version...when you are ranked in the lower 20s on so many catagories you have nowhere to go but up....and they will.

Belichick obviously was embarrased on how his defense was ranked last season...he will improve it one way or the other.

Now let's get a top OG to replace Mankins when he goes after this season.

He allowed 5 sacks in 1400 pass attempts in 3 years. Thank God they said "n"o to Costanzo

Solder is a stud.

5 sacks and 21 pressures, amazing numbers. Also fits mold of LT's. I heard Willie Roaf on Sirius and he said good LT's in the NFL were either TE's or DE's previously. Giants and Colts wanted Solder at 19 and 21. In my eyes this is a solid pick. Solid player and a need. 17 is never too high for a LT, especially one with this kids skill set.

who cares, It's not like Solder is this elite player or something. Word is that the patriots just settled on Solder anyways. Let him go to the Giants, we don't need a player like him. Could've gotten Carimi at 28 and chosen a DEFENSIVE PLAYER at 17 instead. I'll say the same thing to you that I've been saying about Solder, he's to raw of a player to justify the Patriots picking him at 17. Belichick screws up sometimes, he is far from perfect and gets a little too cute sometimes when it comes to these drafts and misses out on a lot of great players. Nate Solder will not help the Patriots win this year at pick 17 they needed someone who could come in and contribute right away, Solder is not the answer to that problem, I would have even chosen Danny Watkins over Solder because he can help this team right away.

There are lots of guys to consider. Some include Rackley, Ijalana Moffit, Franklin, Hudson and Weisnewski.

Most have Hudson as the highest rated, and a major upgrade over Ohrnberger. I would expect him to start at OC this year or next.

Marcus Gilbert, FL or Clint Boling, Georgia, both can play multiple spots

Re: Solder, really?

I bet u felt the same way about devin mccourty, i havnt given up on cunningam who i think will produce pretty well for us, especially being a rookie conversion. It seems like an easy pick to make.. mankins possibyl walking, light a free agent he was easily the best player on the board in my eyes at 17 with not alot of risk

Ask any non-Pats fan and they'll tell you how pissed they are that Belichick gets so many picks. Pats fans in general are way too hard on him. He does a way better job than anybody here would.

I think Nate Solder is a solid pick up. He has great feet, very athletic, has a 35 inch reach. If Light stays, he could develop better. The only real con I see about him is that he is to high and has to get lower. Other than that he is a great pick up. I think we had a successful 1st round and now we have 3 picks in the 2nd and an extra 2012 1st rounder!!
