I know its stupid but why is the site on gmt time?

It is by default, but it can be changed easily:

On the menu bar up top, select User CP>Edit Options>Date+Time Options>Time Zone.

I wish I had been smart enough to ask this question. I amended my time and now I can tell what time posts have actually been added.

Because the board's best poster lives in the GMT time zone. It allows you to think, "hmmm, it's 3.30am GMT on a Monday morning. There is no way that gomezcat will be posting. I might as well log off. I will have to attempt to find another way to get some pleasure from life, sigh! ".
