Pick #28 supposedly being shopped

I hope New England decides to keep the thirty-third pick because there could be good value there such as Christian Ballard.

Christian Ballard is a 3rd round prospect. Early 2nd would be quite the reach.

In any case I think trading down from 28 is tempting because a lot of the talent available there looks the same as what would be available in the early 2nd. Particularly if you can get a bounty for a QB prospect that falls towards the end of the round.

As for the article that you quoted. 99.999% chance that will NEVER HAPPEN. Pats won't trade their two 1sts for the #1 overall pick. The contract costs are prohibitive and the risks are doubled. All eggs in one basket. Don't see value there. That's not how BB operates.

Totally agree here, no way that we move up more than a few spots, and even that would surprise me. I can't see too many scenarios where BB would move up to draft the #1 overall pick. He'd have to really be enamored with the prospect, and I don't think we'll ever see anything like that. Actually, I bet a lot of money that even if it were our pick to begin with, BB would easily trade down out of the spot.

There is one possible problem with trading down this year. Just as free agents can't be signed and players under contract cannot be traded, as of today there is no 2012 draft and trading 2011 picks for selections in 2012 may not be allowed on draft day w/o a signed CBA.

I doubt that the patriots would just want to accumulate more picks in this years draft.

The terminology regarding movement of Picks seems to be rather Wild West, right now...But "Trading Down" seems to clearly refer to trading within a given year, not between years, as you suggest, my good man: The term I use is "Trading Back", but there are other terms used, like "Trading Out". Actually, that may be the only other term: "Trading Down" is universally used to refer to a trade within a Draft year.

Personally, I am ALL for Trading Down, as I would LOVE to see us make a LOAD of moves, load up like CRAZY...and scoop up Binkies Galore!!

shopping it right now is meaningless because nobody has any idea who will be there.

the #33 could bring a hefty bounty.......maybe a late #2 and a 2012 #1 if the right guy that the pats don't need/want is there

That would be quite the haul. Hard to imagine a team giving up all of that.

Then I remembered the Bills gave up a ton to move back up into the first and take J.P. Losman. Their 2nd, 5th, and next year's 1st.

And again, for J.P. Losman :singing:

GREAT call: I'd completely forgotten that bit of insanity!!

Much like the Ravens giving it up a 2nd and a 1st ~ Vince Wilfork!! ~ to us for Kyle Boller!! :rocker:

for #19 in the 1st round of the 2003 draft, the pats got #36 (eugene wilson) and a 1st rounder in 2004

the only real thing I that may not make this happen is that out of the positions that stand to be available at #33, many of the likely scenarios are talent at positions the pats could likely use......

Hogwash. This reminds me of the highly public Dinner that BB et. al. had with Tim Tebow last offseason. Remember how tongues were wagging and hearts were aflutter because of that?

Seems like smoke to me. Expect that Patriots to trade up....

I just want a top talent pass rusher early this draft. The past two offseasons have left me disappointed that BB hasnt adressed a pretty obvious need.

So do I but I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't take one in round one.

I already know that. I was speaking hypothetically as the writer of the article was. I never wrote that that trade would happen in real life.

As for Christian Ballard, his stock is on the rise. I think it's premature to assume that he's nothing more than a third round prospect. I mean you speak as if a player can't improve his value. All it takes is one or two teams to really like him and you've a player who was presumably a third round prospect become a late first round pick or middle second round pick.

If he were selected toward the end of the first round, then it wouldn't have been a reach if he'd gone to New England with Carolina's second round pick.

New Orleans (twenty-fourth), Atlanta (twenty-seventh) and the Jets (thirtieth) could target a defensive lineman in the first round.

Tony Pauline of SI.com listed Ballard as one of the players who made the biggest move: "Ballard continues his climb up draft boards and his combine workout may have cemented the former Hawkeye as a Round 1 selection. Weighing 283, he clocked under 4.8 on his first try, then showcased a variety of athletic skills during the drills."

According to one source, Ballard ran 40 times of 4.7 and 4.75. A lot of linebackers and at least one tight end at the combine would have loved to have those times.

Hawkeyes? stocks rise

I think it will be traded to Seattle and they will select a QB. Mallet maybe? I fully expect a 1st rounder in 2012 and a 2nd rounder this year. Bless you Pete Carrol and your 4th place division finish next year.
