Holt: Patriots need another receiver

Well...what they need is a guy like Jabar Gaffney. Have the Patriots EVER, I mean EVER, had a more effective third option at wide receiver? And I don't really count Troy Brown as a third option. How many times did we see Brady/Cassel look to Moss, to Welker, then find Gaffney wide open on the sideline to haul in an 8 or 10 yard pass on 3rd and 7 when everyone else was covered? Gaffney was money, and it's too bad Krafty didn't want to show him the money and keep him around...

Gaffney didn't even get that much from denver if I recall correctly.

Correct - 4 years/$10M, 3M guaranteed I believe...

For years the Patriots have tried to fill the third/fourth WR spot on the absolute cheap. It's obvious they don't value the position greatly. Look at the guys they've brought in - most have been cheap veterans, guys coming off injuries, or draft picks who sign deals advantageous to the team. Torry Holt, David Patten, Donald Hayes, Doug Gabriel, Jabar Gaffney, Reche Caldwell, Galloway, Sam Aiken!, Kelly Washington, Andre Davis, Dedrick Ward, JJ Stokes, Bert Emmanuel, Torrance Small, Fred Coleman, Chris Calloway...not necessarily an encyclopedia of talented free agent receivers.

I'm not counting the guys they've drafted - I'd argue the only receivers drafted in the Belichick regime that've worked out are Branch and Givens...cannot think of anyone else, and they've drafted a bunch more...

On your point about Price, i think he was one of the fastest recievers in the combine, he is a speedsters.

Straight line speed is over rated from what i have seen in college he is more like a givens type. He is does not cut or change directions like even tate.

Tate is like 5'10" although listed at 5'11" 1/2 . Another smurf is not what we need. Tallest WR we have is Price and he does not play.

I think this whole height thing is overrated .Its not like teams have tall receivers every where. what you need is ability to read the coverage and find open spots. this is something that young players struggle. You telling me that if tate is able to do this very consistently like deion or wes and catches the ball and then runs he will be not dynamic.

I think I'm gonna start calling this Logan Mankins syndrome, when people don't want to admit it was Bill's call because after all he's a HOF HC and COTY... Bill sets the unit budgets and decides how the overall budget is to be spent. He would only go to Kraft if he WANTED to exceed it, and if that EVER happened and Kraft wasn't inclined to listen to him he probably wouldn't still be here. He's the economics major who adheres to the value model. Kraft is the guy who bestowed big bucks on underperforming and overrated players before Bill got here.

Bill obviously felt there was a line beyond which retaining Gaffney vs. upgrading elsewhere didn't represent good value. Not sure Gaffney would have been on the field here this year with the return to the 2 TE set and it's production. He'd have been the 3rd or 4th WR and targeted about as often as Tate (less the ST production). That player isn't worth $2M more than Tate. Maybe if Denver hadn't overpaid for him they'd have fielded a better defense and Josh might still have a HCing job...

Cousin,
Here is what I am saying. Tate was the #2 WR on the Team as far as where he was positioned. He had some drops as so did Welker and Hernandez. I am willing to bet anything you want that TB looks for Welker or Hernandez before Tate in any critical situation. As Holt says emphatically, the Pats need one WR and perhaps two. You and I also do not have that added information if Tate was running bad or incorrect routes as to why he was not targeted more. If you notice Holt commented on Price first (not that it is a prime indicator) and his comments on Tate were luke warm at best. He was there and saw.
He indicated the Pats need a experienced wide receiver so I read "yuck" on what we have right now. I think Tate brings more to the table as far as a #4 or #5 guy than say a Kelly Washington or Aiken but that is all. He is Bethel and in fact, I think Bethel was a better return guy when you consider a whole season. He is a great little #4th or 5th guy but I would rather have Edelman get more reps because he can do more even though he had drops too. By the way, in only 8 games this year at SD, ST player Kelley Washington had 13 receptions to Tates 24, and he was their #5 WR.

What I do not understand here is that at UNC Tate was noted for his return skills and records, not as a receiver. Yet we try to convince ourselves he is the next Stanley Morgan with his speed, or even a Gaffney worse case.

My thoughts on him are tainted I must admit. Anyone who smokes marahoochie right before the most important job interview in your life (combine), is just plain stupid (don't give me this "he's just a kid" crap. You or I would not have been that dumb). You have to be smart to play for BB and he got another chance. Perhaps it is not translating between the meeting room to the field.

The WR class of this years Draft is very weak after Green and Jones. So BB is off the hook if he is trying to get a WR on any of our first picks. This to me dictates an experienced WR or Price and Edleman have to move in to Tom and Gisele's house for the summer.

It is not my first choice but I think a sixth to the Bengals for Chad Johnson makes this Team better in 2011. I think he becomes a good soldier, he loves to play the game, he would be our tallest WR, he runs precise routes and had 67 catches as maybe the 2nd or third read for Palmer in a dysfunctional Bengals offensive team. As we all know now, Welker can be amusing as well and BB made him pay (example for Chad?). Picture this: The fourth down play with the Jets-Branch is covered by Revis-TB throws even though Tate was open-By the way Branch drops what was a very difficult catch-Was there another read?-By the way.....Tate was open-In 2011 TB throws that ball to Chad. Who would disagree?

The Draft class other than some of our needs like DE,OLB and O Line, is weak this year. We have nine picks plus comp(Watson?). Drafting all those guys are automatic cuts because we already have some nice young talent and nine or more will not budge all the others out (I am guessing only 4 make it this year to the travel squad). Fitzgerald is my first priority in trade talks. Some say wait for Fitz and let us compete with the other 31 Teams for his services in 2012....like that won't cost even more??? Send a decent pick and player (perhaps Mr. Tate?) for Fitz......now! It could cost us less money. Now we still have a ton of picks and depth at the positions of need in the Draft.

We saw the issue in the Jets game and it's what other top defenses will do to us. They will bet we cant/wont run the ball consistently and constantly, rush 4, drop the rest into coverage, flood the middle of the field and bet your CB's can take on Welker/Branch outside the numbers and jam them off the line. Teams with CB's like Cromartie/Revis can and will

If you get a better O-Line with some road graders at Center/G and you pound the ball you force more of the D to play up. This is also why the more mobile QB's are doing so well, as it forces a spy or one or more of he LB's/S to play up

A tall CB who can outjump guys on the outside may help but so would a run game the playcallers would trust to take the ball out of Tom's hands and win the game when either he's off or the D shows the same mass coverage looks

Hence why personally id stick with what we have, and draft a top C and G and a big FB in the lower rounds

All this being said better playcalling helps too, inc getting/trusting Gronk/Hernandez on the outside as well as up the seam and showing more spread looks as well as the constant 2TE sets

Fortunately there aren't a lot of teams with CBS like Cromartie/Revis.

It's not that they thought the Pats couldnt' run the ball because of our talent level, it's that they didn't care if the Pats ran the ball because of the game situation-when you're up two scares, you don't care as much if the other team grinds it out. The Pats ran for 113 yards and 4 yards per carry against the Jets, which isn't all that bad.

The Patriots can get all the road graders they want, and all the running backs they want, but at some point it's going to be 3rd and 8 and they're going to need to get a 9 yard completion with 4:00 left in the 4th quarter. Branch and Welker will be covered, the middle of the field will be congested. Will Tate be that guy? Price? I don't think so. They need someone who can get open for Brady when the protection breaks down.
It just sucks that this team has been so poor in the post season the past few years - actually, it f#cking sucks. You only get so many bites at the apple, and I strongly feel the 2010 Patriots (followed closely by the 2006 team) will go down as the biggest "woulda, shoulda, coulda" teams in franchise history.
I wonder what broken down veteran receiver(s) Belichick will bring in this off season...my guess is any of the following - Hank Baskett, Chansi Stuckey, Kevin Curtis, and Brian Finneran...

What they need is speed.A deep threat. They dont have that.I dont know what Taylor Price is now.

Randy Moss would likely cost less than a year ago!

Too bad about Randy's issues. Can you imagine an offense with him, branch, welker, gronk and/or hernandez? Yikes.

Here's another point...I would fathom that in the Patriots' close games their third down conversion rate in the fourth quarter on passing downs was terrible. I don't have the time to look at the game books, but I bet it was pretty bad. Basically, I'd argue that when they REALLY needed a third down conversion when the opponent KNEW they were going to pass, they sucked.
I bet if you compare these situations from 03 & 04 to 09 & 10, the difference would be stark. Ideally, I'd like to see the proverbial "big time" wide receiver come here (not necessarily a Moss-type guy), but someone so Branch and Welker could become option #2 and option #3 - maybe that's a way to look at it as opposed to looking for a third receiver...

Why all the hate for Deion? He's not what he was in 03-05, but he still has that remarkable telepathic connection with Brady . . . in clutch situations, he transforms into Jerry Rice!

Not even close. Deion's name should never be mentioned in the same sentence with Jerry Rice.

Let's review the third round of the 2009 NFL Draft:

http://www.nfl.com/draft/history/fulldraft

#83 Brandon Tate, North Carolina - New England Patriots
#84 Mike Wallace, Mississippi - Pittsburgh Steelers

Oh the irony, especially considering which team is playing in the Super Bowl this Sunday.

On the Pats blog Reiss is talking with L Fitzgerald, he will be a FA next year, reading his comments he would be a perfect fit for this org. beyond being arguable the best WR in the game. He would be worth a #1 pick maybe even more (W Welker was traded for a 2nd & 7th) if the Cards don't think he would be back (yeah I know about the CBA). If you read the piece it sounds like he would pass up the very last dollar to win a championship.

I want him in a Pats uni.

Greetings,
Too bad Alshon Jeffrey is only a sophomore. To me he is the next big dominant physical threat in the NFL. If the Patriots go with a receiver in the draft early, A.J. Green would not be bad, plus he may be available in the second round!!

Peace,
Celticboy04.
