Brandon Spikes suspended for banned substance for 4 games

Here's to hoping that he will no longer be our problem and the team cuts him altogether before next week. The Spikes experiment was a good one, but it's over. Eye gouging at Florida, sex video on the internet and now this. It's a failed drug test regardless, but if it is PEDs other than sudafed or the like, as is now reported, then who says he can even be effective without them. Could be the next Merriman= awful without the "assistance."
I'm just going to come out and say what everyone is thinking. Shut up and go away.

Got the email alert about this and thought "Aw man, WTH?" Lame.

WIth such a young team there had to be a worry about one of them hitting the Rookie Wallmart Medicine Aisle

Just more fodder for ESPN, perhaps they can discuss spy gate once again.

Still really like him as a player, he will be back.

It's probably this

*Pseudoephedrine is prohibited by the NFL except as properly prescribed by Club medical personnel.

Looks like it's in about 300 cold and decongestant medicines and it's related to amphetamine, so considered performance enhancing by some, though it wasn't formerly.

A few

#

NyQuil D (containing Acetaminophen, Dextromethorphan, Doxylamine, and Pseudoephedrine)

The NFL also has a policy that NFL players may not appear in advertisements for any banned drug or supplement.

Both Vince Wilfork and Drew Brees routinely appear in ads promoting the use of this banned substance.

Why the heck have neither of them been suspended from the league?

Okay, seriously, I don't want either suspended. But you would think at minimum the league would demand the ads stop running. And a player would have a very valid excuse for taking it by mistake. "The Superbowl MVP told me to take it."

Not sure what the deal is, but many of these products have eliminated this ingredient, or have two versions. It's rather confusing.

As i stated before, a sinus medicine i took for sinus headaches (sinutab) now sells OTC with a different formula, and doesn't work worth s**t now.

Just wanted to show this is a common and necessary ingredient in sinus medication, though similar formerly legal related chemicals have been used to enhance performance and have caused heart problems.

Not cut and dried, in other words.

Easy for you to say.

Easy for me to paste.

Oops, I forgot the quote tags. I swear, I've never said anything like that in my life!!

Naw. We need to have a few bad boys in the defensive backfield. For the first time in years receivers are scared to enter that backfield.

I hope he comes into the playoffs fresh and PO'd and knocks some heads off....

Yes.. I am. Feel free to offer your unreserved apology now.

You don't get second chances with substances (even if it's a mistake). Be happy it's the NFL and it's a 4 game suspension. That's 2 years at Olympic level sports.

*LOL* Sure you are..

BTW, where did I say Spikes should get a 2nd chance.. I didn't.. So your blather is wasted.. As is typical of someone on their high horse..

So, if we get the number one seed, it will be nearly two months before he plays a game again.

There's no reason he can give for this that gets him off of the "You dumb-*****!" list.

If it is a traditional PED, or an illegal substance, wouldn't he be saying the same thing he's saying now?

Math isn't your strong suit, is it? Where do you get 2 months??? It's a 4 game suspension, which starts this week.. And then the bye week. If you look at the calendar, it's 3 weeks of practice that he'll miss.

Wow, now this poor innocent guy was desperately searching for relief at 3am because his severe sinus pain was so intense that he couldn't think straight? What a joke. Keep drumming up these ridiculous scenarios to justify the idiocy of an NFL player taking medication without checking to make sure it doesn't contain a banned substance. That was great, tell us now how Rodney only used HGH because he had a pituitary disorder.

I don't care if he was using steroids or not since roughly %99.78 of NFL players take some sort of PED, but this line of excuse making is richer than a triple chocolate fudge cake.

Another person on their high horse.. It's not idiocy. It's called being HUMAN. Clearly, you're another of these stupid people who think that pro athletes aren't human and therefore don't ever make mistakes..

BTW, it's not an excuse. It's reality. They are human like everyone else.

I was under the impression that over the counter medication, while banned, are not considered PEDs. Am I wrong? This is getting too hard to follow.

Pseudoephedrine is considered a "PED" because it's an amphetamine. It's why you have to get it from the pharmacist now and sign for it.

People, stop being thick. The banned OTCs are banned because they contain masking agents that allow to to pass various PED tests. The whole I was sick thing is usually just a convenient excuse for the public.

Well first of all, it was just a joke. No need to get upset like this.

Second, it is not a masking agent. If you had read the banned substance list, you'd realize that those are listed separately. Actifed is on the list because it contains pseudophedrine (amphetamine based decongestant), which dilates nasal passages. It also happens to contain an antihistamine and when you take it at night, makes you feel like someone beat with a golf club up by morning. (<-- psst that's the joke part)

Actually the real reason you have to sign for it is that it is used to 'cook' meth-amphetamines and the druggies were buying it in bulk.

Pseudoephedrine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
>>>>>>The similarity in chemical structure to the amphetamines has made pseudoephedrine a sought-after chemical precursor in the illicit manufacture of methamphetamine and methcathinone. .................

Many retailers such as Target, Walgreens, CVS, and Winn-Dixie have created corporate policies restricting the sale of pseudoephedrine-containing products. Their policies restrict sales by limiting purchase quantities and requiring a minimum age with proper identification. <<<<<<<<

It is not technically an amphetamine but a sympathomimetic drug, meaning it mimics the effects of amphetamines on the central nervous system, (increased heart rate, increased BP)

This sucks....even more than losing a good player...

  • We are no longer taking about the beat down of the jets.
  • The Jets message boards are talking about Spikes instead of firing their OC.

I wanted to relish this win longer!!!!!!

Calm down. It's a mosquito bite.

His official statement (that was vetted by the league office before being allowed out) is that it was not a performance enhancer or illegal drug. Obviously it was something for a cold.

If invented stuff on a Jets fan board is going to ruin your weekend, then you won't be able to "relish" alot of the great things that may happen over the next two months. As the Pats get closer to the playoffs, etc. expect the "You-Know-What Gate" stories, conspiracies and rehashings from fan boards across the country to increase as the media glare grows.

Good point, the deeper into the playoffs the Pats get the more we're going to hear about this gate and that gate. People need to get use to it. If we make it to the SB it will most likely be re-hashed ad naseum.

i'm surprised the team doesnt have a policy that basically states that you need to talk to the team doctor about the cough drops your wife brings home from CVS.

generally speaking, the entire league testing policy is a joke. they don't test for HGH, which by most accounts, is way better than any of the PEDs that have been around for years.

Its like a teacher who checks the brim of her student's hats to catch cheaters when all the kids have their iphones in plain view.
