Improvements better be in works - The Boston Globe

some interesting info

When the Browns studied film of the Patriots, they had supreme confidence the ground was the way to go.

“We saw that we could run it on them,’’ said center Alex Mack. “And that’s what part of our game plan was, and we were able to stay up on them and continue with the run game.’’
The Browns knew inside linebacker Mayo had 17, 19, 12, and 17 tackles in his previous four games.

Cleveland wasn’t going to let that happen again. Mayo was the No. 1 priority for the Browns. Keeping nose tackle Vince Wilfork out of the side of the play was a close second.

“We knew that Mayo is really a run-flow guy and he’s one of the top tacklers on the team,’’ Mack said. “So one of our goals was to make sure we had someone on him because we knew that he makes a lot of tackles. So we were heads-up about how good he is. Wilfork is a real heavy, good player with a really good motor, so we had to keep on him and keep him from shedding off.’’

That left rookie strong-side inside linebacker Brandon Spikes as the player to go after. As a less-experienced player, the Browns thought there was a high probability Spikes would overpursue and perhaps run into a wrong gap.

“He’s a downhill run-hit kind of guy,’’ Mack said. “So we kind of knew what to expect and I think we did a good job in the game plan to try to exploit what we wanted to.’’

Mayo probably will be sore this morning, because whether it was Mack, Steinbach, left tackle Joe Thomas, guard Billy Yates, or right tackle Floyd Womack, Mayo had one of the Browns’ big bodies on him almost every play.

I think the loss will be beneficial for the development of this young defense...they came back to earth and realized they have to improve a lot...
I'm sure too that the front 7 and Spikes will be pretty pissed about being run on so heavily...they should all be high character guys, take this as a slap in the face and taking pride in avoiding such games in the future...

Why do we fall? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up again.

I love this stuff, total bulletin board material. If commentary like this doesn't get the run defense more motivated, I don't know what will.

Having only one quality defensive lineman, and a rookie ILB who's learning on the job, is a problem. Sometimes, the coaching is going to be able to overcome this. Sometimes, as we saw yesterday, that coaching isn't going to be good enough.

BB is too clever to get taken twice by this. Instead of downhill Spikes at ILB he'll start McKenzie at ILB against running teams. Book it.

Yes, Father...but sometimes before we pick ourselves up, someone is standing there waiting to kick us in the midsection. This time, they will be dressed in black and gold and they know a little bit about running the ball.

Cleveland gave the other running teams a blueprint to follow.

OUCH

It's interesting you say that because as this game progressed, somewhere along the line my thinking changed from "Holy Cr@p, we're getting our behinds kicked by THE BROWNS!" to
"This might be a lot of the same thing we see from the Steelers next week. Hope Bill is taking notes!"

We are not a perfect team, to be sure, but we're also 6-2 at the halfway point, so I am not totally stressed out about the Browns loss!

I still think we could very well be a 12-4, 11-5 team, assuming the wheels don't come off from here on out, which I don't think they will!

I thought Tyrone was released?

I might not be getting the tone as you might be joking here...but isn't McKenize a free agent right now?

:wha: :gossip:

Is there some sarcasm here?

mckenzie was released ..was he not ?

I've also heard that Wheatley is going to start next game at CB. Book it.

Previously, I'd posted here calling the Browns game as Wheatley's breakout game.
A literal interpretation turns out to be right on the mark!
Wicked Pissah!

Their HC used to DC this scheme. This doesn't surprise me a whole lot.

We were eventually going to see this. The Browns essentially sealed off Mayo (shame to see that he's still having some difficulty shedding blocks), and used Spikes aggressive one-gapping tendencies against him.

Before yesterday the run defense has been solid. I am not worried yet.

Also, whenever a team has success doing something, there is always a player who claims "we knew we could do this or that". We never hear about the times when a team goes into a game convinced that they could do something against the other team and they fail miserably. That is a sports cliche.

Mack is a weenie....I hope he gets hurt in the next game.
