PFT: Patriots, among many other teams, expected to make a waiver claim for Moss

When does this claiming take place?

Well, there's been no official confirmation that he is on today's waiver wire, at least none that I've seen.

But once he is on the wire, teams will have 24 hours to fax a claim to the league office. If there are zero claims after 24 hours, he becomes an UFA. If there is one claim after 24 hours, he goes to that team. If there are multiple claims, the team with the worst record of the claiming teams (with ties broken by SOS) is awarded the remainder of his contract.

There will be multiple claims on Randy Moss. If he were a player with a multiple year contract left, it might be an issue. But a cost-controlled 8-game rental of a hall of famer is not going to slip through waivers.

Doesn't anyone think it is weird that there is still no official waiving from the waiving that hit the press 2 days ago?

Can somebody explain to me how this works? If someone claims him when will we know?Doesnt it break quickly?

Schefler confirmed that he was waived today

He was offically waived at 4pm today.

I dont get why a losing team would claim Moss.I can see a winning team claiming Moss.Teams like Cincinnati, san francisco, dallas, carolina, etc doesnt make any sense.Even the bills.

That's when the League will announce it.

The Bills could announce they've claimed him anytime and that would be that...

Right -- if the Bills claim him the news could come out any time, unless waiver claims are revocable. (I think they actually might be within the 24 hour period.)

Otherwise, the league will simply gather up the faxes they have received by tomorrow at 4 and whichever one is highest on the current claim list is awarded the contract. It's not like a draft where they ask each team in order. If the Chargers put in a claim right now and the Cowboys put one in at 3:59 p.m. tomorrow, the Cowboys get him.

Often losing teams do things that don't make any sense. That is why they lose.

No way the Patriots make a claim on Moss.

I don't think there is any way in hell the Pats claim Moss.. i don't think they would sign him IF he cleared waivers either. They just traded him away. I just don't see them doing this unless they could trade him back to the Vikings or Raiders for yet another pick!

Why wouldnt they sign him as a FA if he claims waivers? Clearly wants to come back, and seems to have an attitude change. The team says they would welcome him back and Brady and others have said the team is better with Moss

Thanks guys.

Didn't the Patriots trade Moss because he was becoming a disruptive influence in some sort of way?

Given the fact that he did something in Minnesota disruptive enough to get released just four weeks later, why does everybody think that the Patriots would want him back again? Is what he did in Minnesota proof that he's changed in any way, no actually just the opposite.

Re: PFT: Patriots expected to claim Moss

So what?

Absolutely no question if Randy comes back to NE this week he will be the "good Randy." Absolutely no question at some point he will turn back into "bad Randy." Only question is how long do we get "good Randy".

Don't sign him to an extention, just have him play under his old contract. End of the season offer him a one year deal. If that works out sign him to another one year deal. When he starts to turn into "bad Randy" cut him or trade him for another pick (assuming BB can find someone else as stupid as Brad.) If he walks at the end of a season we get a comp pick. Where's the down side?

Hey, I've said if BB wants him back, I support his decision to do what he thinks is best.

I am just amused to read how many people think he's learned his lesson now after all the other lessons he presumably forgot. What I'm saying is he just might not ever learn the lesson. Doesn't mean he can't help for a year or something, just a general observation.

Essentially it is reverse order of the current NFL standings - in other words the same way the order for the draft is determined. Pats currently have the best record so they would be last; Buffalo has the NFL's worst record they pick first.

Edit: not sure about tiebreakers, but waiver order would pretty much be bottom to top from this list:

Isn't there a rule about if a team already has claimed a player that week that their priority goes to the end?

I ask because I know that the Giants claimed Alex Hall off waivers and San Fran claimed Thaddeus Gibson off waivers.

Did he not sound genuine in his PC Sunday after the game? I think he realizes how good he had it here in NE and is prepared to do whatever it teams to be apart of a team and contend for a SB

So, just thinking this through. The Pats received a 3rd round pick for him. If he goes through waivers unclaimed and signs here, the Vikings will have to pay his salary. When he leaves at the end of the year, the pats would get a comp. pick. Correct?

So in summary, we would get a 3rd round pick, a comp pick, a full season of Moss minus 4 games, and half of his salary for the year covered. No wonder teams hate us. :rocker:

No. The max pick the Pats could get is a 5th rounder. There is a little known rule that any player with 10 or more vested years can only get a max comp of a 5th rounder. This came out in 2009 when the Steelers only got a 5th for Alan Faneca.
