PFT: Patriots, among many other teams, expected to make a waiver claim for Moss

Re: PFT: Patriots expected to claim Moss

Is your point claim versus make a claim? Really? :ugh: You've had better posting days, kon. Anyways, tell it to PFT, I guess.

Your original title was misleading. A lot of posters would look at that and take it as the article was saying that the Patriots were the only team expecting to put in a claim for Moss and that it was a sure thing. Why would I tell it to PFT when you're the one that made the thread title?

In my view, only a guy who doesn't know how the waiver wire works would think that. But I changed the title anyways out of consideration for the casual forum reader.

Re: PFT: Patriots expected to claim Moss

If the Pats get the chance to bring Randy back I think they will jump all over it. You could tell in Moss' PC that he genuinely misses NE and the guys here and is prepared to do whatever it takes to win. With his career coming to an end, without a SB that is what he wants and I think going to the Vikings made him realize that in order to win a SB he is going to have to be a team player and not a selfish one

He should have thought about all of that when he was talking about playing for another team after week one. A 33 year old man in his 13th season shouldn't need that kind of wake up call. Also you list reasons why he wants to come back, how about what's best for the team.

Yeah he made a mistake in leaving. People make mistakes. Doesnt seem like the Pats are holding a grudge. He has learned and will move on.

As for whats best for the team, Brady has said on many occasions that the Patriots are a better team with Moss. Welkers numbers are better with Moss. The Patriots are a better team with Moss, as long as he maintains a team first attitude.

Can someone put the order of the waiver claim.

Florio's logic, such as it is, is that if other teams put in a claim, and NE doesn't, it might make Moss bitter.

Speaking in regards to the 32nd team in priority in general, I can think of a few reasons:

1) Not wanting to risk losing out on a player based on what may amount to insignficant $ value.
2) Respect for the player.
3) Just to mess with people because you know you aren't going to get him.

It is sound logic. Lets say two teams file waive claims -- Pats and Cleveland. And Moss is convinced that the only reason Cleveland picked him up was cause Eric wanted to screw Bill. Well, then Randy might act in such a way that would force Mangini to cut him. (Randy has a real knack for this.) But if the Pats didn't file a claim he might conclude that the Browns were literally his last chance as no other team on the planet was interested in him.

Unless nobody tries to claim him off waivers, how would Moss or Florio or any of the rest of us know which teams did or did not put in a waiver claim? Assuming somebody claims him the only thing known for sure is which lower ranked teams passed on him. I don't recall the NFL ever announcing which teams put in a claim but missed out on any previous waiver transactions.

Of course, that won't stop Michael Silver or somebody else from writing a column on which teams tried to claim him based on unnamed sources.

There are a lot of posters in here who have demonstrated that they don't know how the waiver wire works. But you're right, it's not important. The completely misleading thread title was changed and that's all that matters.

Essentially it is reverse order of the current NFL standings - in other words the same way the order for the draft is determined. Pats currently have the best record so they would be last; Buffalo has the NFL's worst record they pick first.

Edit: not sure about tiebreakers, but waiver order would pretty much be bottom to top from this list:
NFL.com | NFL Standings: League

Edit 2: some more on waiver rules here: NESN | NFL waiver Wire Rules Give Patriots Final Shot at Randy Moss Before Wideout Becomes Free Agent
Prior to Sept. 28, the waiver wire goes in the order of the NFL's worst to best team based on the previous season's records. After Sept. 28, however, the waiver wire changes each week based on the current worst and best record in the NFL. Currently, the Bills at 0-7 will get the first crack at Moss. The 6-1 Patriots have the best record in football and therefore, get the last shot at him.

Should he get claimed in the waiver wire, his salary will remain the same: $6.4 million over the remaining nine games.

Should he go unclaimed, Moss would become a restricted free agent and can sign anywhere he chooses. Once a free agent, though, the Vikes would pay him the remainder of his salary and he would then have to negotiate a new contract.

So, just thinking this through. The Pats received a 3rd round pick for him. If he goes through waivers unclaimed and signs here, the Vikings will have to pay his salary. When he leaves at the end of the year, the pats would get a comp. pick. Correct?

So in summary, we would get a 3rd round pick, a comp pick, a full season of Moss minus 4 games, and half of his salary for the year covered. No wonder teams hate us. :rocker:

Re: PFT: Patriots expected to claim Moss

I think we are missing the point

If Moss clears waivers, the Vikings are on the hook for the rest of his contract.

As a free agent he gets all that money from his contract plus extra money from where he signs.

Moss would be double dipping.

Whatever one thinks of Moss, what do you think Vikings ownership would think of their coach Colonel Klink if that happened?

Imagine if he signed with the Bears or the Packers or any team scheduled to visit Minnesota?

I have often read...such and such team also filed a waiver claim in stories. Don't know if that came from the league or the teams themselves.

That would be hilarious, but I don't see how Moss is clearing waivers. There are too many needy teams out there. The only way he clears them is if he tells the league he won't play for you if you are awarded your claim on him. But if he does that he might hurt himself in free agency, so I don't see him doing it.

Re: PFT: Patriots expected to claim Moss

Why would a team claim him after he just got ditched by two teams? I know he is talented, but I think people see the writing on the wall with the presser, he wants to go to NE, why would a team risk picking up his contract and then *****ing, esp. a team not in the playoff hunt. BTW, IRC, he can decline to show up to the team who claims him, as a vested veteran, making him a UFA, but he forfeits his contract.

He would have to sit out the remainder of the 2010 season though and not get paid

lame-duck coaches who have nothing to lose

Another reason to claim him is that you wouldn't have to negotiate with him.

If I'm the Jets or the Dolphins I claim him and try and convince him to play for me, just to keep him from NE. If he refuses, well, there's nothing I could do about it. But you can't just roll over and let him go to your competitor.

It'll be interesting to see what happens if he refuses to report. I didn't know he could do that and become a FA.

Next season. If he refuses to report to a team that claims him he cannot play for another team in 2010

What if Moss declares retirement. Who will pay his contract? '
