Mike Mayock Calls Out Light & Connolly

The Ravens game in 2007, Barnes beat Light like a drum that day too

Add him to the list of guys with Taylor, Schobel, that he has trouble with.

Good call, Welshman. I had forgotten about that.

Maybe somebody who DVR'd the game can go back and look, but I wonder how much affect Crumpler's injury had on the pass protection. I recall him limping to the sidelines early in the game, and although he returned to play the whole game, I seem to recall a few plays late in the game where he was beat, including the 4th and one.

Not saying Light and Connolly don't deserve some criticism, but I just can't help but feel that Crumpler being at less than 100% may have had something to do with the performance of the line as well.

That would certainly excuse Light, at least a little. It wouldn't excuse Koppen and Connolly, though.

If Crumpler wasn't able, Grankowski should have been playing TE on that side. Light often needs help from the TE.

Motivation 101...

Get a bucket of excrement and leave it by Matt Light's locker.

"Hey Matt, that's how you played against the Chargers."

Does your boss do that to you?

I'll be concerned about this if we end up facing the NYG again in the Super Bowl.

I think that Connelly's reads and responsibilities have been kept simple and manageable, and that both Light and Koppen have had to do more, or expect less help, to make up for it. Light's ups and downs have ben fairly predictable, but prior to this season, Koppen has been steadier; I have to suspect that Mankins' absence has a lot to do with why Koppen's been getting some negative attention.

just saw it .pathetic performance by both, basic 1-1/simple twist stunt rushes on 3-4 man rushes they got beat badly. Of course baldinger had to end it with "you think brady wants to give some of his money to logan mankins?"

Just reviewed the game. Connolly was passable in run blocking, but couldn't handle Castillo's combination of strength and quickness one on one in pass protection. With Light having his problems and Koppen also inept, it was almost a jailbreak at times on the left side. On one play, as Light was being beaten, Connolly and Koppen did almost nothing as Castillo split them and gave Brady nowhere to go. Interior pressure has always been a disaster for Brady as he's adept at stepping up to avoid the outside rush, but doesn't have the foot speed to run away from it. Light's struggles were much accentuated because Brady couldn't step up. Looked a lot like the superbowl breakdowns against the Giants...

If memory serves Light has always been troubled by speed rushers, even journeymen JAG types.

The o-line was due a mulligan. They've been pretty good as a unit this year.

Great to have a left tackle who's only weakness is pass rushers.

Vollmer...

Vollmer...

Vollmer has been nothing special this year as a pass blocker. He gave up another sack and a couple of pressures Sunday.

He's inexperienced plus he's a better left tackle than Light now.

Funny how "Light can't play right tackle" but the they expect a less experienced player to excel on both sides.

Light's a nice guy with a good sense of humor. We have been expected to exempt him from being able to block basically all the best rushers we face, usually twice a year. Are we supposed to hope other teams draft slow pass rushers?

Maybe. He was unreal last year, and had an amazing game vs Freeney. But he was amazing last year at RT too, and he's struggling this year in pass protection. As I mentioned in another thread, he was injured in preaseason and may not be fully recovered. And neither Woodhead or BJGE chip like Faulk did. Who's to say Vollmer's fall off in performance -- for whatever reason -- wouldn't be an equal problem at LT? And who would play RT?

Mike Mayock, who can never be called a hater, just called out Light and Connolly on NFLN. Says he looked at the tape of the Chargers game, and expected to see that the Chargers scheme was why Brady was pressured so much last Sunday. Instead, he found that a "journeyman" end Antawn Barnes beat Light regularly, and Connolly couldn't block the D tackle, even when helped by a Koppen double team.

Mayock said b/c of these two linemen, the Patriots missed a couple of scoring opportunities. He seemed troubled by what he saw.

Thoughts?

Mayock is my favorite analyst to listen to. He is non-biased as far as I can tell and has a brilliant command of the playbook so to speak and the game itself. This just confirms what we all thought we saw. Lightweight has been getting beaten like a rug against the better players for YEARS now....as far as connolly...believe it is his first game where he has played that poorly. Light needs to go (finally).....and connolly needs more work. Great work by mayock as usual.

I'd give Vollmer the rest of this year to cut his teeth at RT before moving him over to the left side. Vollmer has had his troubles in pass protection this year as well.
