We actually made some third down stops tonight, though.

You really need to get with the times or else you are going to drive yourself crazy.

The NFL is about offense, offense and more offense. Defense is really about the red zone and turnovers. With the amount of penalties that can keep drives going, the ticky tack way the DB's have to cover etc... lead to the monster offensive numbers we have seen over the pass few seasons.

Teams will throw for more yards in today's NFL, so the redzone is one of the areas where games are won and lost. But I think that getting off the field on 3rd down is even more important. Any time you can get a team into a 3rd and 7+, the defense has to get off the field.

There's no correlation between defensive schemes and turnovers from year to year. The numbers are all over the place. You can't build a defense around creating turnovers (because most turnovers are the result of mistakes made by the offense, and thus are not in the defense's control). Look at the 4 picks by the Dolphins tonight: 2 balls that should have never been thrown, a miscommunication between the QB and his receiver, and a pass that hit the WR in the numbers and popped out of his hands.

Some turnovers are gifts, but many are forced by the defense as well.

Still alot to work on but definitely a step in the right direction. The defense wasn't as bad as the 30 spot last week and I also think they weren't as good as the 14 spot this week. We need better 3rd down defense and it will be light years better. Some mistakes by McCourty, Arrington and the safeties on 3rd and longs which seem correctable. Make stops in those situations and it's a big difference from what we've seen. I truly feel this defense will be solid come November.

I agree, though I would change from "solid" come November to at least "better " come November.

There are still issues that might not improve simply with experience:

- lack of talent at OLB;

- lack of talent at DE;

- lack of consistent pass rush, due to lack of talent at OLB & DE;

- and lack of quality depth at CB (or at Safety, dep. on Stomper's injury).

Darius Butler needs to get his head outta his ass ASAP, so that the surprisingly poor-tackling Arrington can return to the bench where he belongs.

Speaking of poor tackling, Jarrad Page continues to demonstrate why KC was so eager to trade him here.

And Jerod Mayo cannot catch a pass if his life depended on it.

To their credit though, the D's overall tackling was much improved from last week; and they're starting to create turnovers to help bail themselves out of all these invasions into their territory by the opponent. They'll need to continue to create TOs as long as they continue to allow 400 yds of total offense.

After each game I like to hand out grades.

They earned a "W." A W is the highest grade awarded and is a better grade than a T or an L.

You guys don't get it.

The pats defense in warm weather plays sloppy, but when the weather starts getting colder, they should have a easier time stooping the pass.

I doubt the cincy bagels, the miami salmon, new york paper planes, baltimore pigeons and the buffalo cows can put those offensive numbers in 10 degree winter new england weather.
Hell, i highly DOUBT mark would have those numbers at home in December.

It's a work in progress. Particularly their inconsistency on 3rd down. They had me worried alot today at times.

On that play where flacco ran and def got the 1st for example. I was impressed that they handled Ray Rice and the ravens rushing O in multiple sets. That would be our biggest victory today.

It's kinda sad. Patriots know they will get a heavy dose of PeytonHillis in today's game. Yet, PeytonHillis runs over 180yds.

The D-line and the D-coord needs to get yelled at.

Defense has been playing on air for 4 weeks, they were due for a letdown. Especially since the offense didn't give them any breaks.

Don't worry about it, the talent is there and this was to be expected. Bill will give them an ear full and a half this week. I still expect a win next week.
