I still can't watch the game again. What I can't believe is, with the exception of a meaningless forced fumble just before halftime, the turnover ratio was really +1 in favor of the Patriots. How could a team so dominant and incredible actually win the turnover game yet still lose to a very average opponent? That is why comparisons to the '01 Pats-Rams game don't pan out. The Pats forced two turnovers, one returned for a touchdown. The Rams made lots of critical mistakes. In SB42, the Patriots didn't drop balls over the field, fumble on the one yard line, or throw backbreaking interceptions... somehow a team that outscored their opponents by 315 points during the regular season were beaten by a team that outscored their opponents by 22 points.
The only thing I can tell myself to ease the pain is, by that point in the season, the Patriots were far from the team they were earlier, as demonstrated by close calls vs. the Eagles, Ravens, Giants (in December), and a shaky offensive performance against the Chargers. Not that the game would have meant less had they won.
Blame it on holding calls, Samuel, or whatever... never should have been in that position.
To me, going undefeated is a bit overrated, I mean, I think the Colts and Saints both could have done it last year. It's the complete domination and offensive records that made this team a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
