Clearly you don't follow the Pats. Slater is on all 6 Special Team units. He is an average kick return man and an average punt return guy.. He's also young, cheap and one of the better special teams guys..

I was at every single training camp practice the last three years, I have seen just about every single play Matthew Slater has played in the NFL.. the guy sucks

If Sergio makes the final cut..I'll be pumped :singing:

I realize the value of special teams players, but there comes a time when we were wasting far to many precious roster spots on mere special teams guys who had absolutely no chance of helping anywhere else, but ST. It's good to see BB do a little needed house cleaning.

WOW.. just WOW>. you are really trying to make excuses for your crass post?

BB has ALWAYS carried players who specialized on Special Teams. To say that those players had "absolutely no chance of helping anywhere else" is an incorrect statement on your part. Aiken was fine as a 5th receiver. Woods was a decent back-up OLB.. Not Good, but decent.

Woods was also one of the most consistent tacklers on special teams.

Granted, I didn't care for Aiken and thought he was a goner, but I don't take pleasure in being correct about it

I would not be surprised to see him back..the special teams really will suffer without a vet ST player..NOTHING good so far about that..
Slater is into his 3rd year. Not a vet by those standards, but he'll have learnt from the coaches.

The Secondary have all contributed on ST, they've got some experience between them on that.

Murrell? Ninko?

I've got no problem with it.

It's the Coaches job to organise it and the ST Captains job to get them working hard and watching tape.

i said awhile back that i thought that as long as slater is healthy that he would make the team. especially after the rams game when zoltan had like 5 ****ty punts in a row(i really think those poor punts were on purpose to test our coverage teams and they didn't fare well.) Say what you want about Slater, but he is a sure tackler and forces many fare catches. Special team demons= slater, arrington, mccourty.

It will be funny if he is cut a minute after posting this though.

Ninko deserves a slot. The kid has been playing over his head for 1+ years now.

Patriots release special teams captain Sam Aiken
Posted by Ian Rapoport at 5:45 pm

Aiken catchThe Patriots have released Sam Aiken, a source just told me.

He was the team’s special teams captain from 2009 and a player thought to have the sixth roster spot as a receiver. This is one of the biggest surprises on cut-down day.

I first wondered if Aiken would get cut on Day 2 of camp when Patrick Chung began seeing reps as the personal protector, which was Aiken’s job in 2009. Director of player personnel Nick Caserio had said it was just to have options. That option is now the main guy on punts.

Aiken had seven catches for 38 yards and a touchdown in the preseason, looking like the sixth receiver. Instead, he’s no longer on the team. Makes you wonder which receiver the Patriots will pick up… if any.

Yeah, ok! It's a business, and if there are more deserving players on the team I root for you're damn right I'm going to be happy when the less deserving go! Sorry if you don't like it, but that's the way it is!

So, I guess we should all cheer if/when you lose your job? Great.

It's also someone gaining a job. There are only 53 jobs, everytime someone gets cut, someone else wins that job. Not to disagree with your overall point, that cheering cuts is lame, but there are many ways to look at it.

Re: Sam Aiken Gone too

Aiken seems to have received a bad rap on this board but for a kid who ws outstanding on ST and was a quasi-decent 5th WR, he was productive by all measurements.

God luck to him.

Sure, have at it...Although I won't be losing my job anytime soon because I perform up to my work place standards

Re: Sam Aiken Gone too

So who's the ST captain now?

Chung. I predicted Aiken's being cut when I began seeing Chung as personal protector and gunner. Those are Aiken's positions.

well the clock just struck 6 pm. So I assume all the cuts have been made. But I would be very surprised if at least one move from outside the Org. isnt made in the next day or two.

You could still lose your job. Who is to say that they didn't perform up to standards.. There is such a thing as the players performing up to the standards but still being outperformed..

You should learn the difference.
