That's a pretty harsh reaction to Damon, if it's just because he signed with NY after Boston.

Maybe DL Drew, Beckett, and the rest of the infirmary will toughen up after adding Johnny Damon.

The reaction to Damon is only harsh because he joined New York. Now he isn't sure whether or not he'll accept the move to Boston and I hope he doesn't. He showed absolutely no loyalty going to that team and I can't, for the life of me, understand why anybody on that team would want him back. I hope that if he DOES come back, he gets boo'ed upon his first game.

I like Johnny Damon more than I like most of the current Sox players. Even at age 36 he is probably tougher (and more fun, likeable) than 95% of the current Sox team.

I respect your perspective, but for me personally I don't give a rats arse that he left Boston for New York.

It always happens that every time a player leaves Boston, that the media and Sox management create a smear campaign and demonize a guy right before he leaves. It works on the masses EVERY. TIME.

The Sox don't win that championship in 04 without Damon, and the Yankees don't win either without him a few years later.

The clannish mentality against Damon, in my opinion, is the same stuff that contributed to Boston not winning a ring for 86 years.

I may not be on the mainstream on this one. I, for one, would still love to have Manny Ramirez back as well.

For both Damon and Manny, I attribute any of their bridge burning to simply following very poor (and evil) advice from their agents.

Damon was offered 12Million more by the Yankees than what Boston was offering for the same duration, why didn't Boston step up?

Why didn't Boston step up to get Mark Texeira?

I'm with the players on this, and amazed that the media machine can be so effective to demonize players when Boston clearly lowballs their own guys.

Logan Mankins and Tom Brady apply too. I'm completely with Mankins and Brady in their negotiations. The media tries to smear Mankins saying he was offered top 3 guard money, but when you look at it, 35M over 5 with the 1 year RFA means he makes about 6.1M over 6 years, which is more like #10th best guard money, which is pretty ridiculous. Similar thing with Wilfork last year, leaking vague details early to seem like he turned down good money.

Boston needs to stop lowballing its own guys, especially in baseball where there isn't a salary cap.

I didn't like him going to the Yankees, but I lost respect for him in doing so because of his comments that he wouldn't do that. If you want the most $, that's fine -- but I hate players who pretend it's nit about $ whenit is. And if you're going to open your trap about loyalty to the fans, you should expect it to bite you in the ass among those fans when you go back on your word.

Lowball? The Sox offered him 4 at $40M and apparently didn't get the chance to counter once the Yankees entered the picture. Call it a "smear campaign" but that's not an insignificant offer.

I don't care for Damon because he's such a hyprocrite. Apparently, the Red Sox showed him no loyalty because they didn't offer him more money, but where was that loyalty when he could have re-signed with KC or Oakland? Where was that loyalty this offseason when the Yankees DIDN'T OFFER HIM A CONTRACT? At least the Sox did that in 2005. You don't hear him whining about Cashman - all you hear about is how happy he was in NY and how he'd waive his no trade clause to rejoin them.

Johnny Damon was offered 12 million more over the same year duration to play elsewhere. Blame the Sox management for not stepping up. Don't blame Damon for taking significantly more money elsewhere. In your current job if another company offered you 50K more, you'd probably take it, even if you loved your current place.

After Damon got the offer from the Yankees, he went back to the Sox, and they LAUGHED at him on the phone. It was on the radio today, and I remember reports about this before. I believe this was when Theo wasn't GM and it was a two-headed GM controlling things.

The Sox pulled the same thing with Jason Bay. They purposely low balled him with a crappy contract offer, then had to scramble when it looked like he was going to actually sign it!

The Sox play this game, over and over, where if they don't want to pay a guy, they'll float rumors of how much the guy turned down, and make sure to character assassinate his way out of town. Damon was one of a long line of casualties in this process. Just a few months ago, Sox nation was brainwashed to want to run David Ortiz out of town.
